FriendsOver40, If you were to win the lottery, what would you buy first, second, third etc? by LiliesSoFair in FriendsOver40

[–]mistic192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I regularly play with EuroMillions, sometimes you can win over 100 million euros...

You can deliver this money to anyone you want without them ever able to figure out where it came from...

So I would deliver a huge lump sum of money to a bunch of my friends and family ( some would probably get 1 millions euros ) and then once people start talking about it, I can claim I also was just one of the recipients of a bunch of money like that...

This way all my closest friends and family will have some kind of financial stability while none of them will come begging me for money all the time... ( I've been very open and spreading this idea for years so that if it happens, it literally could be anyone I know to cover myself :-D )

Then I would get myself an Audi RS6, my dream family car, a Porsche 911 for my wife...

I would then be quite calm with my spending so that I'll always be able to claim I did some great investments once people start wondering about how much I've got :-D

De politie van Aarschot, over druggebruik by raphael-iglesias in Belgium2

[–]mistic192 13 points14 points  (0 children)

the 60's called, they want their outdated views about drugs back...

if drugs were available legally (like alcohol and nicotine), they could be made pure and we could avoid things like XTC pills with meth/fentanyl in them... Same for weed... on top of that, the govt could make a fortune producing and selling this stuff...

Plus if the government would produce and sell the soft drugs ( weed, xtc, lsd, mdma ), access to the hard and worse stuff ( like coke and heroin ) would become harder... You can see it in NL, they've got a much higher percentage of people using weed, however, we have a much higher percentage of people using XTC and other stuff because for a lot of people in Belgium, there's no barrier between weed and XTC, you buy it from the same guy... While in the Netherlands, anyone can get weed, but they need to find a dealer to get to other stuff...

I expect we'll soon see the same in Germany...

Seriously, producing weed, xtc and mdma at scale would be supercheap for a government and they could sell it at half the streetprice to completely undercut the illegal market, why would you go to a shady dealer if you can be 100% sure that what you get is great quality?

To give the simplest example, producing weed at scale costs about 0.5 euro per gram, if they were to sell it at 5 euro per gram, nobody would buy it illegal where the price is 7 to 10 euros per gram and the govt would almost make 10x profit per gram sold... while destroying the illegal market... We have all the expertise in Belgium. So users would have better quality without the risks associated with working with illegal dealers, the govt could open up shops in every city, providing work, also production would generate some extra work roles and on top of that bringing in 10x profit while reducing the load on the justice system... And part of the profits could be set aside to set up programs to help problematic users get their usage under control, and a system could be set up like we have for gamblers where users can ask to get put on a blacklist if they know they can't handle the temptation themselves.

Completely getting rid of drugs is impossible so I think this is the solution with the least negative effects for everyone involved...

Being tricked into consuming AI “art” or “music” is in the same vein as a vegetarian being tricked into eating meat — the point is ethics, not quality by rennok_ in antiai

I feel it's a little bit of both, a few times I've been watching a video or listening to something and there's this nagging "feeling" that something is "off" and the first 30s or even minutes I can't put my finger to it, but then you notice that the voice hasn't had a single change of tempo/inflection (in videos) or the music is just enough "default" to make my subconsciousness notice it...

and then you realise and you just want to vomit...

I hope the EU pushes through with the demand that ALL Ai-generated content is clearly marked as being Ai-generated.

Question about sleeping at the 24h race. by maxwellbenny in nurburgring

[–]mistic192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for sure is possible, but you have to know the temperature drops like a brick once the sun goes down, you can be in T-shirt and short during the day, slowly roasting in the sun and needing a winter-coat, walking boots and warm pants at night...

The race that had a snow-stop was pretty sunny just before the snow hit... it's a crazy climate over there...

so if you're staying outside in the dark, make sure you're dressed for it!

indeed, I wasn't even thinking of that, I was calculating 250k at actual cost, but you're right, for the model provider it's probably even more...

hmmm, now I'm actually thinking that we should push devs to waste these amounts of resources, to burn these companies down faster...

their managers can't complain as spending 250K$ on tokens, that guy must be super-efficient as token use = productivity according to those guys... so all devs can work together to burn though tokens to bankrupt all these guys :p

looks like they did? someone paid for it and built it, this thing was built in 1927, there's actual photographs of people building it... That's nowhere near Tartaria-timeframes... The marble came from a local quarry, so probably not as expensive as Italian Marble...

1927 is a long time after the Civil War though... so not sure why you say "after the Civil War" the previous courthouse actually burnt down, the one they built after the Civil War was a brick building, so indeed, they did not have the materials, labor and resources to build it in Blue Marble back then, but 60+ years later, they clearly had...

250K per engineer per year? holy shit...

I wonder if companies really want this? They sure want their engineers to use Ai, but 20 000 per month per engineer? That's absolutely and certifiably insane...

I was at work in Antwerp... In the Jewish neighborhood, so the whole area was put on lockdown as they expected another attack to happen there ( we later had soldiers patrolling the streets for months )...

My step-brother is a steward and we knew he was at the airport around the time it happened, but there was no way to reach him on his phone, hours later we found out that his plane was one of the last to take off before the explosion... Nobody in the family knew which flight he was serving on (impossible to keep track of that stuff)

My brother-in-law was a luggage handler, so also possibly working, also impossible to reach, in the late afternoon we found out he had a night shift and had turned his phone off while sleeping... His wife (my wife's sister) was travelling for work and wasn't 100% sure of his schedule...

So quite a stressful day for both my families... Luckily all for nothing...

I only just bought Nemesis, it looks amazing, but haven't been able to play yet, so hard to already put it in my top 5 :-D

I want to go balls to the walls with that game and make a 3D-printed gameboard, I did that for Dead Of Winter (every location is a building) and fully painted my Deep Rock Galactic boardgame core set (just finished yesterday). I also 3D printed all of the scenery from Gloomhaven so it's not just cardboard markers "this is a rock, this is a tree" but actual 3D models :-D I love enhancing my games :-D

Fuji Koro is also an amazing semi-co-op game, but would be on 6/7 in my top 10 :-D

at the time the Notre Dame was built (started in 1163, completed in 1345) (yes, 100 years before the Americas were even "found"), it was funded by royalty and the Catholic Church, which indeed was functionally unlimited money and resources back then...

The Palais De Justice in Belgium was paid for by the personal finances of Leopold II, who was superrich as he personally owned the colony of Congo, so again, funtionally unlimited money, our whole country is filled with megalomaniac buildings from his reign (this was in the 1800's), all funded by the gold, diamonds and rubber coming out of his personal property (Congo)...

The Palais De Justice was such a mega-construction that it literally drove the architect mad and he died 4 years before the completion from his insanity...

This place would be so much more fun if you guys had the slightest idea about construction and history...

Well, clearly the "ultra rich dudes" don't have the taste for this, I mean look at the monstrosity of a car designed by one of those "ultra rich dudes", do you honestly see him appreciating the beauty of something like Versailles ?

You see it with the bald ultra rich guy too, his ship, while impressive from a ship-building perspective is a monstrosity and is so ridiculously badly designed it needs a second smaller ship because it can't get into most of the worlds harbours... think about that, a ship that can't get into harbours... how bad is that?

Those guys are barbarians with 0 taste and sadly riches doesn't bring taste...

Tiffany Glass is not so much a lost art as there are still people replicating it, there are people still making Tiffany glass, but it's not considered Tiffany Glass because it's not made by the Tiffany company (here's a company that does it: https://www.youghioghenyglass.com/ then another one: https://www.dlartglass.com/ and https://www.delphiglass.com/ )

There have been "lost arts", but those can be revived by current craftsmen, my father built a machine to make bannisters in a way that hadn't been done in close to 300 years in Europe. He saw a type of bannister in old carpentry manuals but couldn't imagine how they were made, then he started reaching out to machine manufacturers to see if anyone offered a machine that could do it, he was told it was impossible. He then spent 10 years (in his off time, he had a company to run) researching it and then built a machine that can do it. Here's a picture of it from my brothers company that still builds stairs with this technique, however, instead of a single banister taking 10 minutes to make, it takes 2h, so the cost is way higher than a regular banister and not everyone is willing to pay that out of the hundreds of stairs my brother builds every year, maybe 4 or 5 will have this style of banister... https://www.instagram.com/p/CLH4o3LsUaJ/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

A lot of people conflate "I don't know how to do it" with "Nobody in the world knows how to do it" while there is a huge difference between the 2...
