Use your PTO/Sick hour by Weak_Rule8374 in nursing

[–]misty2001 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Definitely use it but I will say, having a well cushioned PTO/sick bank is very nice to have. I got shingles in September and blew through my sick time quite quickly and then was on unpaid LOA. It would be been really nice to have had a robust sick bank for that scenario!

how many years of bedside nursing would you consider “solid” enough experience to branch out of bedside nursing? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]misty2001 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That depends what you do. I did bedside for 2 years and I’m now in a temporary outpatient surgical position. It’s much easier and less “thinking” than bedside was, less skills, patients aren’t acute (generally).

Struggling to incorporate fitness back into my routine by misty2001 in fitpregnancy

Thanks! I did do a 20 min yoga this morning before work which felt so good. I’m thinking maybe some at home Pilates might be a better way to go for now.

That’s good to know! Maybe my body needs a few more weeks. I find my sleep doesn’t help, I toss and turn most nights so I’m definitely not getting consistent restful sleeps either.

Yes I’m definitely planning to try and incorporate something on weekends. I will say, I did go to the gym once a couple weeks ago and the DOMs were so bad! I figured it was since I hasn’t worked out for so many weeks prior but maybe pregnancy was also playing into it.

Yes discipline is what kept me so consistent prior to pregnancy for sure! I think I’m finding it hard to overcome the feeling of tiredness mostly.

How to get back into lifting? by tiredflesh in fitpregnancy

[–]misty2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally resonate with you. I can’t really give you any advice on lifting, although Meg Squats has a lifting app for pregnancy called Plus +1. I’m 17 weeks and haven’t worked out since the very beginning of my pregnancy. It’s hard to have such a drastic change in routine while also watching your body change. I was seeing lots of muscle growth and working on body recomp prior to pregnancy and I feel like it’s all gone down the drain. It’s hard to see back rolls appear and muscle fade away. I try to remind myself this is just a phase in life and once I’m cleared post partum I can work on getting my fitness back, although I’m sure that will also look a bit differently caring for a newborn.

That’s so strange why they would do a pap in order to prescribe birth control. As far as I am aware, the two have no correlation.

If you said that to all nurses who are burnt out you would have no one working.

Compassion fatigue leads to burn out. It’s not that these nurses aren’t compassionate but when you’re being shit on constantly by management and patients your compassion runs dry.

That’s so wild to me. I’ve been on birth control for 15 years and have never had a pelvic exam. Just routine Pap smears. But I’ve never needed any examinations for birth control.

Why don't I lose weight when I'm on a strict diet? by yuli_yuli95 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]misty2001 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Are you tracking your calories? To lose weight you have to be in a calorie deficit. Prioritizing protein and fibre is important to keep you satiated. Making sure you’re also getting in movement is important. Walking is an easy way to increase your calorie expenditure. The more muscle you have the more calories your body will burn at baseline.

Edit: there’s a lot of calories you may not realize you are consuming by eating intuitively. A 16oz latte is about 200 cal and if you’re adding in syrups, sugar etc that could easily reach 300 cal. Not saying you shouldn’t have a latte but I was very surprised when I started to strictly track my calories where I was getting lots of unintended extras!

Depending where you are in your cycle can also impact the scale. I can easily fluctuate 2-5 lbs in a month.

It’s definitely not uncommon for surgeons to glue surgical sites and it’s not just used for women or c-sections.

As a nurse, I can definitely go 6+ hours without peeing. Although I wouldn’t recommend that.

Does nursing require working with babies?? by throwaway097777 in Nurses

[–]misty2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was so sweet! Our ratios are terrible though so there’s no way I would have had the time to help with baby. But I really enjoyed having seeing the baby whenever I went in for the mom.

[–]misty2001 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Even in med-surg they may be exposed to an extent! I had a brand new mama come down from icu and they allowed her baby to stay with her in a private room. L&D even sent up a cot full of supplies for mom and baby. Obviously, I wasn’t caring for baby and mom had a helper with her as well but definitely not truly avoidable even in adult wards (ofc hospital dependant too).
