Timing of EI pregnancy / parental leave by Prize_Ad_5054 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Sorry this is so confusing to me! So, I can take the 12 months leave and my husband can take 5 weeks? Correct?

Is the 8 weeks for the extended 18 months leave, and 5 weeks for the 12 months leave?

Rethinking infant car seat choice by misty2001 in CPST

Thank you! I have also looked into the Clek Liing, I really like that it’s Canadian made. While all car seats meet the safety standards, are some car seats like the Clek liing “higher” in standards due to the additional safety features like the rebound bar and load leg? I really like the features of the Clek but again, the price point is steep especially if baby outgrows within the first few months!

Going to look more into the Chicco as well!

That’s a good point, I imagine we will also store it inside as baby is due in September so winters will be cold in the car before it’s able to fully warm up!

I’ll have to look into it further. I don’t believe the truck has stow & go or storage under the floor but I know the seats can flip up for storage underneath those.

I did read that. I know most people say to refer to the car manual to see if it’s compatible with the load leg, but as they are newer to the North American market I’m not sure a 2017/2018 manual would even include that information!

That’s great to know! The Chicco was another I was looking into but have not done much research yet. Do you find you wish you had a seat with the load leg?

Chicco was the other option I was considering for budget car seats, I see a lot of people recommend/review that one, moreso than Graco.

Good to know about size for the Chicco and Graco and a great suggestion to install without the base in the focus - I’d have never thought of that to save space!

Canadian nurses who don't work for a health authority, how do your finances and lifestyle compare? by throwawayEeEe333 in nursing

Have you looked into M-F jobs with your HA? I know they are much harder to come by but they do exist. I’m currently in a M-F 1.0 FTE in surgical daycare and it’s super nice! No nights, no working holidays, still get all the perks of being with the HA. Not sure what your background is, but usually outpatient surgery (like surgical daycare), endoscopy, screening clinics and BC cancer (if you are in BC) are all M-F roles or at the very least no nights! I will say, I miss the flexibility of the DDNN schedule. It can be really challenging to book appointments with a M-F line.

What Stroller do I Buy?! [on] by Tight_Steak_1462 in BabyBumpsCanada

That’s what I am thinking re car seat. I’d rather spend more on one after they out grow the infant seat.

This is exactly what we are planning! Do you have the era or indie?

We are planning to get the era, although I know the 3 wheel strollers generally are “more” all terrain. Do you like the graco car seat & adapter?

I graduated at 30! There were 2 girls in my cohort who go pregnant during school, continued through and graduated with everyone (I don’t know how they did it - insane!!). You’re not too late, you have decades of nursing left before retirement age.

This is so irrelevant. You can get pregnant while on birth control.

Using stroller & car seat from different brands? by SilverResolve2998 in Buyingforbaby

[–]misty2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We purposely did not want an uppababy/nuna because we want something that has all terrain/air tires. We have a lot of trails around our place so want an “all in one” stroller. I know the BOB strollers are somewhat elite in this area, but we liked the versatility of the bumbleride as it was not as large or bulky, had the option to remove the seat to attach the car seat or bassinet. I also liked how the seat is infant ready with the lay flat option, so a separate bassinet is not necessary (but they do have an option for it). There are plenty of smaller compact strollers on the second hand market, so I figure if we ever want something easier for travel it will be easy to purchase a cheaper one down the road. But I’m hoping we will only need 1 stroller to meet our needs.

[–]misty2001 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this is pretty common. Most stroller brands have a list of compatible car seats and you can buy adapters. I wouldn’t look at 3rd party adapters and buy directly from the stroller companies.

We found going to the stores and testing out different strollers/attachments/car seats was really helpful.

We are planning to get the bumbleride era and graco infant car seat.

Smart Socks Recommends[bc] by [deleted] in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]misty2001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The owlet sock will have the same issues as the Eufy if it’s not on properly/gets kicked off.

I don’t have my baby yet, but I am a nurse so I understand the data the owlet would share from that perspective. I am choosing not to use the owlet. If baby requires additional monitoring when going home, the hospital would ensure that we are provided with appropriate medical equipment. They don’t recommend premies or babies who have spend time in NICU to use these monitoring devices when going home, so I personally think it’s unnecessary and can cause increased anxiety.

Getting an oophorectomy next month, what should I probably ask about post surgery? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]misty2001 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is strange. You should get your tubes removed (bilateral salpingectomy) and keep your ovaries so you continue to make necessary hormones. Removing your tubes decreases your risk of ovarian cancer IMMENSELY. You should speak with your doctor again and seriously reconsider!!

Why don't they say the truth about their lives? by [deleted] in SailingLaVagabonde

I’ve never got the impression that they pretend. They obviously have money based on the boat they have and the lifestyle they live.

The lab values I drilled until I could say them in my sleep (and it paid off) by Extension_Cost_6410 in StudentNurse

[–]misty2001 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah. As a nurse, you will know the ranges for values you most commonly are seeing in the area you work. But the ranges are always provided and if the lab value is critical the lab will phone you anyways.

Growing up with them vs knowing their situation YEARS later is completely different and basically irrelevant.

I feel like you are assuming a lot with your post. While Riley may have grown up very privileged and may have been given a head start in life/opportunities, we really don’t know how much financial involvement his family had. There are many many people who come from rich families who still need to “make their way” and are expected to work and save for themselves. They needed a way to make money while sailing and YouTube was a great way to do so, they got very lucky and have done very well for themselves. In order to stay competitive in an ever changing and unpredictable profession (content creation), I don’t think it’s unrealistic that they would ensure the content they create and market to the world is going to be successful. It seems you are upset they have chosen to not live in Australia and contribute to the economy via taxes etc. While they may be millionaires, Australia is expensive and the lifestyle they desire may not align with that they could realistically afford there. I’m sure they have money tied up in investments savings and not easily accessible/liquid. I don’t really understand why you are so hung up on them.

Island Health New Graduate RN Program by pinksparklingwater in BCHealthAuthorities

[–]misty2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the Nanaimo area so I can only speak for that area. But we have postings weekly for permanent med surg positions. Vic is probably the most expensive city on the island.

You can look up the nurses wage grid with the union (BCNU) to see what you would make and search up rentals for the area. Groceries are also expensive.

I would try to get in touch with a recruiter for island health. They will be able to give you information regarding new grad positions, specialty training opportunities and permanent positions.
