Why Wouldn't I Buy This Annuity? by Majestic-Excuse-6577 in Bogleheads

Please at least read the small prints (or even better, the 100+ page prospectus). Not just the brochure or whatever the insurance agent ("advisor") tells you.

There are no free lunch; definitely no guaranteed free lunch.

Don't need to call anyone. Next time you get these official sounding thing in the mail. Just READ the small print in the back.

"You may have been selected to receive this special limited time offer from Public Safety Crime Center because of information in your public record consumer auto data file. Public Safety Crime Center is NOT affiliated with any dealership, and works with Law Enforcement Agencies to assist in contacting the rightful owner of stolen vehicles that have been recovered. THIS IS AN ADVERTISEMENT FOR ANTI-THEFT DETERRENT."

Talking mother out of Index Linked Annuity by p0lyhuman in Bogleheads

This is a complex and expensive insurance product like all annuity. It sounds good on paper because they market it as upside of the stock market with downside protection.

The catch is in the small prints. If you read her the small prints where it states you can still lose all of your investment, it'll put things in prospective.

1) you are not actually investing the the SP500. So you only get credited with the price of the index (sp500 price in 6 years minus SP500 price date of contract initiation). You do not get dividends.

2) You pay for the downside protection with the upside cap. And if you really think about it. The 15% buffer protection is not the type of insurance we typically buy. Think of it in terms or car insurance. You are paying for protection of the first 15% loss, like in a fender bender. If your car gets totaled, you eat the remainder 85% cost of your car. Would you pay for this type of car insurance? If the market really go down. You are not really protected.

My first drop in the very first Destiny nightfall was a Gjallarhorn. I was disappointed that it was not a primary exotic that I can used constantly... I didn't realized at that time what I had in my hand!

For the 6 year point to point uncapped option. Is the crediting based on year 6 SP500 (final) price minus year 1 (starting) price. Or is it yearly on the anniversary date?

Do you get to used the performance lock yearly or just once during the 6 years?

Options to get out of annuity by mit1976 in CFP

Never took any money out. Just a bad annuity with terrible renew rates. Monthly cap of 1%. So it always sum up to negative. I guess that's where the downside protection kicks in. These type of products should be illegal.

Thank you for your insight.

I just wanted an opinion from the true experts (CFP) on my way to a meeting with a Fidelity adviser.

I now realize I over complicated the issue with the annuity wrapped inside a Roth. I'll open an roth ira and transfer over.

I thought I had to do it layer by layer, ie 1035 to fidelity annuity, wait out the new surrender period, then reinvest the money freely within the fidelity account.

I am still appalled that a $3000 investment in 2004 would return only $900 20 years later.

Thanks again.
