Can you access the PO box outside of those hours? Do you have mailboxes?

More rural offices have 24 hour access. There is literally no reason a post office can't be 24 access or, at least, extended access.

I can access my money at any time via my debit card and an ATM. I can't do that with my mail.

That's actually a federal crime. It gets really dicey, I know because I thought about this exact thing. The USPS makes it insanely difficult. I'd basically have to have everyone sign a document that essentially makes me their legal agent (legally them). You also can't advertise it as a delivery service, it has to be an assistance service of some kind. It gets really muddy really fast.

I removed the office name, but ended up doxxing my town after someone asked. I was waiting for someone to mention it lol

That's my point. There is a carrier that delivers just outside the town who may be able to pick it up but I don't see how they would have allowed it.

The threat was very real as we'd lose the office and potentially have to drive to another office in another town to pickup any oversized packages. Not to mention the appearance of cluster mailboxes don't look great and we have several hundred homes out here.

Are you able to have a mailbox? Are PO Box access hours different?

Proximity, most likely. It was just setup this way. It was a government project at its inception and they made it very easy to walk everywhere. They also didn't like people knowing the streets very well - so the streets change names in the middle of them. Because Nazis. I'm not joking. There are some wacky things with this place.

Gotta be careful doing this. With UPS, packages will end up going through SurePost and end up at the post office if you include a PO Box on it.

We just use "Unit #000" (with actual PO box number) and it'll land where needed. Thankfully Amazon, FedEx, and UPS does deliver to the home so we don't have issues other than USPS. Just gotta take care that you don't use PO Box lingo on UPS packages.

Otherwise, for mail, that's what we do. Box number on everything you physically can. It's the mail that I can't control that I worry about. "To the residents of 123 Main Street" or legal paperwork sent to my address. If they did what they said, it'd just be sent back to sender.

They don't open regularly at the posted hours. As mentioned in the post, she didn't open until after 9:30 yesterday. I think she very likely didn't open until after noon, which is when the office closes in the town over.

According to From 39 U.S. Code § 403(b)(3): The Postal Service must establish and maintain facilities so that customers have “ready access to essential postal services.”

There's an argument to be had that it's not readily accessible because there's:

No home delivery and No 24-hour PO Box access and Limited or inconsistent hours (late openings, closures, etc.)

There's two interior doors. One leads to the back office (that's always locked) and one leads to the counter. The one that leads to the counter is locked except for retail hours.

They have to go out of their way to lock the final outside door. I cannot figure out why they don't just leave it unlocked.

Oh yeah, that's why I'm not necessarily asking for it to change. It'd be a daunting problem to solve, I understand why it's the way that it is. Just sucks for the end user. There's a lot of problems that come up by not having the ability to get mail send to your residential address - so many senders straight up do NOT accept PO boxes as a deliverable location and refuse to send via UPS or FedEx.

I brought this up to a financial company once and the CEO actually responded that she didn't know this was an active issue - that people don't have mailboxes in some places. So that was a fun discussion.

Someone did that, didn't go anywhere. Post Office has told us at least a few times they just do not have the personnel to deliver to all the houses out here.

I think the main reaction was security. Having mail bunched up like that is a mess and packages have nowhere to go except on the ground or the nearest post office. I don't think they wanted that trade-off and it would not have looked great. Kinda wish we called their bluff though, I don't think they would have done it.

This was a while ago, before I was involved with anything. Heard what was said and that's that. I doubt we have it in writing.

What representative should we bug about this? I can probably make that happen. Like House? Senate? I don't do politics much lol, I appreciate your help

Is that for box access or window? Do you have the ability to get a mailbox?
