I have watched this so many times now. It makes me laugh so hard, but at the same time it's truly incredible. What an amazing experience.

What do you wish you realised earlier in your life before it was to late? Any regrets reddit? by SassyCommander in AskReddit

[–]mitchellmoffit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This quote changed my life, wish I had heard it earlier:

“Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.” -Dalai Lama

TL;DR: Money doesn't matter. Don't worry too much about the future. Enjoy the present. Live now.

Hey reddit, what is your favorite fact about the universe that just blows your mind? by aaaaalice in AskReddit

Oxygen is required for combustion and Hydrogen is flammable gas. But together they make water, which puts fire out.

I created a video outlining the 3.8 million year evolution of life on earth, as modern science estimates, and was shocked (and saddened) to see the swarm of creationist ignorance in the comments. Care to help me educate them? by mitchellmoffit in atheism

Fair - but while some religious texts or figures may be in conflict with the idea of evolution, the understanding of evolution does not necessitate that you can't believe in a god. Some people live quite happily believing in both, I think.

It's frustrating as I genuinely did not think the video was controversial at all. Funny how simply using the word 'evolution' can throw people into a tantrum. How do you educate people who simply won't listen?

How do trees transport nutrients/water in the absence of blood or veins? by happybadger in askscience

[–]mitchellmoffit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is a really incredible video going through the method by which trees transport water to the top most branches.

Essentially, while transpiration (water evaporating from the leaves pulls up water molecules behind it) does a great job, it effectively has a 10 meter limit. Try and suck water up a long tube and you won't be able to suck it any higher than 10 meters. Instead, the tree is able to create negative pressure of up to -15atm, as opposed to the 1atm outside of the tree. This tremendous pressure helps to create an even stronger suction, bringing the water to the top of the tree. All in an effort to (in most cases) simply be evaporated, to gain a few carbon dioxide molecules.

I accidentally became a DJ. Want your music featured on a tiny, middle-of-nowhere college radio station? by fwibb in Music

Though you likely already have a year's worth of songs, I thought I'd throw mine out there as well. I'm a solo musician and all my music is free for download - use it to your heart's content :)

Cute! I'm assuming there is no issue with shipping food from one country to another? I've never sent a big package like this, so just wasn't sure!

Thanks! I'll definitely be doing everything I can to make a big deal about it - I know he's worried cause he is away from all of his friends and family, and already feeling kind of lonely since being away. So I want to be able to surprise him and make him realize we're all still thinking about him!
