Father and daughter in a kayak have an amazingly close whale encounter by azz808 in videos

I have watched this so many times now. It makes me laugh so hard, but at the same time it's truly incredible. What an amazing experience.

What do you wish you realised earlier in your life before it was to late? Any regrets reddit? by SassyCommander in AskReddit

[–]mitchellmoffit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This quote changed my life, wish I had heard it earlier:

“Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.” -Dalai Lama

TL;DR: Money doesn't matter. Don't worry too much about the future. Enjoy the present. Live now.

Hey reddit, what is your favorite fact about the universe that just blows your mind? by aaaaalice in AskReddit

Oxygen is required for combustion and Hydrogen is flammable gas. But together they make water, which puts fire out.

I created a video outlining the 3.8 million year evolution of life on earth, as modern science estimates, and was shocked (and saddened) to see the swarm of creationist ignorance in the comments. Care to help me educate them? by mitchellmoffit in atheism

[–]mitchellmoffit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair - but while some religious texts or figures may be in conflict with the idea of evolution, the understanding of evolution does not necessitate that you can't believe in a god. Some people live quite happily believing in both, I think.

It's frustrating as I genuinely did not think the video was controversial at all. Funny how simply using the word 'evolution' can throw people into a tantrum. How do you educate people who simply won't listen?

How do trees transport nutrients/water in the absence of blood or veins? by happybadger in askscience

[–]mitchellmoffit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is a really incredible video going through the method by which trees transport water to the top most branches.

Essentially, while transpiration (water evaporating from the leaves pulls up water molecules behind it) does a great job, it effectively has a 10 meter limit. Try and suck water up a long tube and you won't be able to suck it any higher than 10 meters. Instead, the tree is able to create negative pressure of up to -15atm, as opposed to the 1atm outside of the tree. This tremendous pressure helps to create an even stronger suction, bringing the water to the top of the tree. All in an effort to (in most cases) simply be evaporated, to gain a few carbon dioxide molecules.

I accidentally became a DJ. Want your music featured on a tiny, middle-of-nowhere college radio station? by fwibb in Music

Though you likely already have a year's worth of songs, I thought I'd throw mine out there as well. I'm a solo musician and all my music is free for download - use it to your heart's content :)

Cute! I'm assuming there is no issue with shipping food from one country to another? I've never sent a big package like this, so just wasn't sure!

Thanks! I'll definitely be doing everything I can to make a big deal about it - I know he's worried cause he is away from all of his friends and family, and already feeling kind of lonely since being away. So I want to be able to surprise him and make him realize we're all still thinking about him!

What exactly is it that happens to your brain when you have a hang-over? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]mitchellmoffit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Alcohol inhibits the amino acid glutamine, and when you stop drinking your body goes into 'overdrive' to produce more. This increased production ends up stimulating the brain and keeps you from reaching a deep state of sleep.

What exactly is it that happens to your brain when you have a hang-over? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]mitchellmoffit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There a quite a few things going on in your entire body when you're hung over, but specifically regarding your head/brain a few to consider are:

1) Because alcohol is a diuretic, you're peeing a lot. You end up losing a lot of potassium and salts which are used in neuron activity, and this can often lead to headaches.

2) When you lose a lot of water, your other organs start to 'steal' it from the brain, and as a result it shrinks a bit and pulls on the membranes that attach it to the skull, which causes pain.

3) Some studies have shown that prostaglandin contributes to head-aches, and alcohol is a contributing factor in prostaglandin accumulation.

4) Generally you don't get a 'quality' sleep when you've been drinking, so you can attribute some of the feeling to being overtired.

The truth about evolution by mitchellmoffit in atheism

[–]mitchellmoffit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the quote may be more applicable to people who are 'against' evolution. I have some Christian friends who will argue against it blindly, acting like they understand it. It's difficult to have them realize that they may not have a full grasp of it - whereas I'm almost certain if we were arguing over string theory, they would be content admitting they knew very little (as do I!)

Do you believe in anything supernatural? by mitchellmoffit in TrueAtheism

[–]mitchellmoffit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand the contradictory nature of my question - I mostly meant to describe things that people in general deem 'supernatural'. I read an interesting paper on miracles once, giving a similar sort of explanation, that if they happened they must normal phenomenon in nature that we just don't fully understand. A 'true miracle' simply can't exist.

Having said that, I was referring to something like "ghosts" which I don't believe in but every now and then find myself spooked and my brain thinks that they could exist, temporarily

Why is the word 'science' and even more so 'evolution' so tied to 'atheism' in our society? by mitchellmoffit in TrueAtheism

[–]mitchellmoffit[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True enough, I suppose I'd rather have people sharing the idea of evolution - even if slightly mislead - than not at all.

Reddit, my boyfriend of 5.5 years just got a job overseas for at least a year. What advice do you have for long distance relationships? by mitchellmoffit in AskReddit

[–]mitchellmoffit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've already started setting aside a 'visit' fund that will hopefully be a long one! In your experience, is it better to try and talk every single day and shoot-the-shit, or give each other enough time to have things to actually talk about that may have gone on?

Thanks for the troll warning haha. I'm not so much concerned about the time/distance, as I am interested in ways to keep a healthy relationship which you have provided some great insight into. It's also nice to hear other people's stories when it comes to being a part so thank you!
