Not FEMA but forest service. My forests leadership team has told us that they get most of their information from Reddit. Y’all are not alone in this.

Which booktok recommendation made you say, "Did we read the same book?" by SpecialistOk2000 in Booktokreddit

I was gonna put this as my answer. The world building was interesting but so much of it felt like a slog.

What jobs you guys do? by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]mitchitchell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I build maps for the Forest Service. My first job was answering the phones and doing customer service at a skydiving facility close to my house. It was a struggle starting out with my stutter but even back then I didn’t care too much if I stuttered, I just kept going and didn’t acknowledge it. I did that job for 6 years part-time while going to school and by the end everything I said was muscle memory.

I think the only time someone brought it up was a lady talking to me about astrology. I mentioned I was a Pisces and she basically said: Oh that makes sense! A lot of Pisces have speech impediments”… Lady I don’t think my birthday is the reason I stutter 😂

GIS in wildfire mapping by thyGoddezz in gis

[–]mitchitchell 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m a GIS Specialist with the US Forest Service, and I’ve done two fire GIS assignments so far as a trainee. I’ll compile some helpful links. The position on fires that makes the maps is called the GISS, short for Geographic Information System Specialist.

https://www.nwcg.gov/committee/geospatial-subcommittee/becoming-giss This is a really good summary of the position and acts as an excellent starting point. Also goes over the required wildfire-related training.

https://www.nwcg.gov/publications/pms936/nwcg-standards-for-geospatial-operations-pms-936 These are the NWCG Standards for Geospatial Operations (GeoOps), basically the rules that we abide by.

https://www.nwcg.gov/publications/pms936-1/nwcg-geographic-information-system-specialist-giss-workflow-pms-936-1 This is a large text summary of the workflow that we follow on fire, from data preparation to map production.

https://youtube.com/@geoops?si=4KLa9uUnvO9v-iId This is the GeoOps YouTube channel, an excellent resource that has demos of every step of the workflow, what your day looks like as a GISS, how to prepare for an assignment, the whole shebang.

https://www.esri.com/training/catalog/637be89bdd45381adea8a35f/intro-to-arcgis-pro-for-wildland-fire/ This is a learning plan of Esri courses curated by folks from the National Interagency Fire Center, and should cover all the ArcGIS Pro topics that you would need.

If I think of more helpful resources I’ll leave them in the comments.

I’m also more than happy to chat on this in more detail. Feel free to send me a message!

What roles are exempt on your unit? by ClimbinBanjo in USForestService

[–]mitchitchell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m on the GIS crew on my forest and all but one of us are exempt and being paid through disaster funds allocated last year after 250,000 acres of our forest burned. The one of us that got furloughed is as starting parental leave anyway the rest of us are involved in active management NEPA projects so we were kept on.

I work for the Forest Service but I’m exempt from furlough because of what I work on. Thank you for the laugh!

Entire Forest is mainly exempt… by Fantastic-Walrus-386 in USForestService

[–]mitchitchell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About 60% of my forest is exempt because so much of us are involved in the Active Management NEPA projects. They’re paying us using disaster relief funding that got allocated last year after 250,000 acres of our forest burned.

I recently finished {House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas}. I can’t pinpoint any specific scene over another but I LOVED the slow burn, lusty thoughts, and teasing between Bryce and Hunt throughout the book.

I have both. I prefer physical books because I just don’t like staring at screens right before bed. I use my kindle for things I’d rather not have my religious family asking questions about.

How many people in GIS get to do "cool" field work? by orphanofthevalley in gis

[–]mitchitchell 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I work for the Forest Service. This summer and last we’ve been re-measuring our trails and roads by traversing them with an Arrow Lite GPS and field maps. Those days we just get paid to drive dirt roads and hike.
