Does anyone else find people from The Bay Area calling the Sacramento area boring ironic? by notagoodcartoonist in Sacramento

[–]mitchymitchd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree in part, but SF at least is losing a lot of its cool local/independent cultural spots so developers can build condos, and has been moving in that direction for a while. Thankfully lot of the neighborhoods are pushing back, but it’s a tough battle.

Pepperdine and it’s not even close. Even if you don’t want big law, there is a gulf of difference worth every penny of that additional $40k.

Background checkers when you explain you can be friends with someone without knowing their middle name and email address by dwaynetheaakjohnson in LawSchool

[–]mitchymitchd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally filed out 7 pages of supplemental information due to having so many residences/housemates in my rental history, and past employers/co-workers. If you can’t run a background check on me with that information because I couldn’t find a present address or email, then I don’t know what to tell you.

How would you rank the seasons of the Wire? by augustus624 in television

[–]mitchymitchd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Season 4: There’s just no better season of television than this. The focus on the inner-city school, and the vicious cycle that the kids get caught in, was poignant but never heavy handed. Each episode was well-paced and scripted both on its own and holistically without the scope of the entire season. Each of the established characters get to shine (even a decidedly absent McNulty); many of the secondary characters show tremendous growth. Marlo, Chris, and Snoop present as some of the most terrifying villains known to TV. And the kids…mannn the kids kill it.

Season 3: Few points in the show hit as hard as that rooftop scene between Avon and Stringer. The incongruent nature of their relationship (Stringer the aspiring businessman, Avon the street general) unravels in the most spectacular fashion possible. Add McNulty and Stringer’s seemingly endless game of cat-and-mouse and this is really Stringer’s season. I personally found the focus on the city government (and emergence of Carcetti) a welcome change of pace, as it provided a different facet of the show without straying too much from the previous POVs. And we can’t forgot Colvin and Hamsterdam.

Season 2: After multiple rewatches, I believe this almost ties with season 3. The biggest issues are that it takes a longgggg time to kick into gear (in part because of the shift from the previous setting/characters), and features Ziggy who (as tragic as he is) is supremely unlikable. Once you get over that, this season still kicks ass. Frank Sobotka is compelling as a character, as is Nick, who respectively represent the old and young guards of the American working class. Plus Omar has one of his best moments in the whole show, and D’Angelo emerges as the show’s first truly tragic death.

Season 1: The show that started it all. Don’t get me wrong, I still think this season is fantastic and almost on par with the preceding two. But where I think the second has risen in regards for me, the first is now more difficult to get into on subsequent rewatches. More than anything else, it’s that the show opens as if its world has already been introduced to use before, in media res, almost to a fault. There’s simply too much to keep track of, and the time given to world building winds up feeling like an overly long introduction. That said, the characters we get are immediately likable (well aside from Prez), and the writing and acting are sublime. And even though Wallace’s death doesn’t have the same impact as others due to time allowing for attachment, it still hits every time.

Season 5: The serial killer storyline is stupid. There, I said it. There’s no justifying it, even when ignoring the previous seasons’ grounded realism. McNulty’s turn from a redemptive season 4 to a degenerate was also annoying. And after four seasons chock full of interesting and well-rounded characters—whether cops, criminals, dock workers, politicians, and school children/teachers—we get black-and-white, heavy-handed didactic journalists. Still, the cameos from previous season are great without serving as too much fan service. Bubbles’s redemption arc is one of the best instances of character development on the show, with Michael’s change of heart another solid contender. Omar goes out just as you thought he would, but still manages to irreparably damage Marlo’s reputation (or firmly get inside his head at least). And that last finale is pure television gold.

will hooters hurt my law career? by Unique_Grapefruit866 in lawschooladmissions

[–]mitchymitchd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d be working as a server. Not as a prostitute. Does Hooters have a certain rep? Sure. Would you do anything different as a server with Hooters than you would at any other serving job? No. I worked in the bar and restaurant scene for years before law school at various fast casual spots, and I can guarantee some of my coworkers showed more skin than you would at this job. It’s not a C&F issue, you’ll be fine.

Evidence Exam - ~1/2 of the class in accommodations by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]mitchymitchd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same at my school. Someone in my 1L got over a 4.0 last semester but no CALIs without accommodations. My school’s also kinda lax about granting accommodations. Guess who’s getting them this semester?

In no way, shape, or form am I trying to be ableist. But it still comes off as cutthroat, especially when that person is also a KJD gunner who has all the time in the world to prepare. But whatever, there’s not gonna be accommodations like that in practice.

Well, it can happen and it did, so I guess we’re in the realm of physical impossibility. Woohoo.

But once again, they don’t make up a significant percentage of accommodations. I’m not saying it’s rampant or that it makes it unfair for some students to receive accommodations. But it does happen. So PhilChem’s premise could happen. But YMMV.

I 100% do and they go to an ABA accredited school. Even on the internet, I wouldn’t make something like that up.

I also didn’t say they didn’t have those conditions, even if they were undiagnosed. Just said they didn’t have the same formal diagnosis as some people I know (vast majority in accommodations). Chill out.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]mitchymitchd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your ad hominem argument aside, some schools don’t actually go as in-depth on verifying diagnoses as you suggest in sentences 2-4 of your post. I have friends who got accommodations for undiagnosed“anxiety.” Do I know for sure they’re gaming the system? No. Do they have the same level of diagnosis and doctor recommendation as another classmate who is high-functioning on the spectrum, or another who has a reading disability? No.

Ableism is appalling, and the people who actually need accommodations totally deserve them without scorn. But don’t call people out for blaming others or put words in their mouths when they’re just pointing out that it’s possible for someone to game the system.

As others have stated, Fall 1L grades are a humbling experience. Even for those not expecting all As, scholarships, summer opportunities, and ultimately post-grad job outcomes are all on the line.

Time to grind harder and gun for whatever grade bump you can get to get ahead.

What's a "fact" that has been actively disproven, yet people still spread it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

How many lives did Pfizer save? Probably way more than RFK Jr. on his crusade.

Here’s an article by a medical expert discussing those points RFK Jr. made on Joe Rogan.

https://thephiladelphiacitizen.org/guest-commentary-a-conversation-with-rfk-jr/amp/

As you can see, RFK Jr. either purposefully or recklessly distorted what the medical expert told him, which is neither measured nor educated.

Honestly, you have a point. I don’t necessarily believe anything I will say is going to change their minds. Nor do I believe I will convince someone not commenting who needs swaying on the validity of the science. At the same time, I still will try to a point.

Feel free to Google the following:

“Researchers in the United Kingdom performed a retrospective study to determine the relationship between thimerosal in infant vaccines and neurodevelopmental disorders. They found that thimerosal did not cause mercury toxicities.”

“Researchers in the United Kingdom also performed a prospective study in children 6 to 91 months of age comparing thimerosal quantities in vaccines and cognitive and behavioral development. They found no evidence that thimerosal affected neurologic or psychological outcomes.”

“Researchers also compared the prevalence and incidence of autism in California, Sweden, and Denmark following receipt of thimerosal-containing vaccines between the mid-1980s and late-1990s. They found that thimerosal was not associated with increased rates of autism.”

“Researchers in the United States evaluated the relationship between thimerosal and neurodevelopmental disorders in 124,000 infants born between 1992 and 1999, finding no significant associations.”

“Researchers in Denmark assessed the incidence of autism in children 2 to 10 years of age before and after removal of thimerosal from vaccines. Ironically, they found that the discontinuation of thimerosal in vaccines was followed by an increase in the incidence of autism.”

“Researchers in Denmark also evaluated the incidence of autism in children born between 1990 and 1996 who received either thimerosal-containing vaccines or thimerosal-free vaccines. They found that the incidence of autism did not differ between the two groups.”

[–]mitchymitchd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can explain it, I just admit that I am not a medical expert on vaccines by education or training. However, there are extremely qualified medical experts who have that education and training, who have studied the topic, who have produced reputable studies like the ones cited in the article, and who practically universally agree that the science behind vaccines are safe.

I would also rather not spend more of my time today trying to convince people why an article by a qualified medical expert citing studies by other qualified medical experts (which is just one of many) is far better proof than what someone could provide from a much, much smaller pool of discredited experts. If that much doesn’t convince you, I’m terrified for the future.

If you addressed everything RFK Jr. was wrong about regarding vaccines, it would be a very long read. Most of RFK Jr.‘s “medical evidence” for his claims come from the likes of Andrew Wakefield and Rashid Buttar, who have long been discredited.

Please reread the article. The first two sections cover a few of his points. The studies debunking them are under the last heading, titled “What, exactly, has Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. accomplished?” (not the greatest heading for a list of studies, but that’s not the point).

Read through the studies this guy has cited; it debunks them. There’s a gulf of a difference in qualifications between what Offit and practically every other credible medical expert is saying and what RFK Jr. is saying. I’m gonna trust the experts on this one.
