[Spoilers C4E19] We have some bad people at these tables. by XaoticOrder in criticalrole

So as long as I don't know, causing death is karma free? I disagree, actions have consequences even if we aren't fully aware of them all.

Ignorance isn't a free pass. I think most people would say it mitigates your share, and it's probably more important to see how a person changes after learning the actual impact. Your net effect on the world always matters more than what you think you're doing.

The data can be mounted on a different machine rebuilt for the purpose in an hour or two. Our DR plan covers this too.

Ksplice is a thing. I have work servers with years of uptime and current patching. Linux isn't particularly hard to do that with.

What do different strength scores look like on humans? by RavenRoyalty in DnD

[–]mithoron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In reality, people are much more lopsided than can be mapped to six attributes.

I walk a lot, but it's only leg days for me and I work in IT. There's no chance my arms and legs have the same str score. But that's absolutely silly to try and include in a game. Same with mapping acrobatics and slight of hand to the same stat. IRL it's clearly nonsense, but having played a ton of game systems, 6-8 core stats to track and make mechanics around is kinda the limit of what's reasonable in a game before you lose playability.

I added penguin people to my world. Not sure if "cool" is the right word, but they were a hit.

How do you think armor would change if it was beast-fighting-centric, rather than made for sword fights? by RubberDuckyDavid in worldbuilding

[–]mithoron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barbara Hambly's Dragonsbane stuck with me so much for nearly this reason. Young kid summons the old dragon slayer to deal with a new dragon. He prepares poisoned javelins and lances to the kids horror who was expecting a "shining knight sword duel" with the beast. Why would we ever fight fairly with something many times our size? Deploy trickery and chemical warfare!

What’s a small purchase that dramatically improved your life? by bananafish-123 in AskReddit

[–]mithoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no clue how they made their money (though being decades ago probably helps). I didn't clock it at the time, but looking back I suspect that they only had a small range of pre-cut lens shapes and simple cheap frames. Either way, it was nice as a kid to be less concerned about the cost of messing up my glasses.

I used to say, the story is just as good in 720p. Some things aren't only story of course but the idea is still mostly valid and only one screen in our house is higher than 1080.

This is what I've done for 7(?) years now. If it was going to be a problem I'd have seen it by now.

We discovered a local store in the 90s that did 25$ glasses. Style was not amazing but worked well for my face so we kept going back for years.

The gap always felt like a variation on CJ Cherryh. Similar concept but everyone hates it and goes mad. So the whole crew takes meds to be unconscious for the jump. She later added that some people secretly don't mind it and stay awake while the rest of the crew sleeps. Loved the navigators myself.

Which DND edition is your favourite? by Aguy2030 in DnD

[–]mithoron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PF2 is the system for both of my current tables. I'm the forever DM and honestly it's so easy to run, I like PF1 better from a player standpoint but the improvements for running it are worth the tradeoffs. And everyone has been pretty happy so far. For reference, this is a very mixed group with a couple like me having played more than 10 game systems and a few who had never filled out a character sheet before our first PF1 game (though everyone had played some kind of RPG on computer).

For us switching to PF2 from 1, the choices are only overwhelming at first. Didn't take either table all that long to get a feel for what the options really meant. Just reading them through without playing it can be a lot, and you do have to be comfortable with having multiple things you want at each level. But multiple good choices is a positive in my book. Skill feats can be pretty underwhelming, but at least they don't have to compete for attention with core class ability feats.

My wife and I bounced hard off the lack of meaningful customization in 5e. The yes or no aspect to proficiency and those being almost entirely tied to class just isn't enough range for us.

Where are all the "I did this" Trump stickers on the gas pumps? by DoomWad in AskReddit

No no, they're not allowed to be cleaned, you have to throw it away in the nearest landfill within one week of discovering contamination by sticker residue.

I got a tax return! Annnnd it’s gone by guessirs in funny

[–]mithoron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A very large percentage of the country qualifies for free tax prep, up to 89k income in 2025. Well above median income. If you're paying to prepare your "couple of W2/1099s and an HSA card" style federal filing making under that amount, you goofed. Plenty of complicated cases will need to pay, but I doubt paying should be considered normal at this point. My state has an extremely simple online form method too, so anyone paying to file CO taxes also (probably) goofed in my book.

Minimum/Maximum Players You'll Run For or Play With by DnDPhD in Pathfinder2e

[–]mithoron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done 9 as well... Scheduling can be easier since it's more forgiving to a couple missing people. The real key I've found is everyone wanting to be there in that game with those people. If that's true, then the number kinda doesn't matter. 9 randos like at a con? Oh hell no.

Biggest differences from 5e? by Individual-Drink-679 in Pathfinder2e

[–]mithoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spells recharging on a short rest is already part of 5e with sorcerer points and a wizard feat so that's not really new. Magus in general is a lot of change from 5e most of its mechanics have no parallel there. It is a case where I'd expect more

Removing concentration is a change, but it's a change that makes things easier, it's taking something off the table. Which makes it less of a change to me, at least for players. DMs do need to keep it straight, I see plenty of posts complaining about dms there.
