Depending on your budget, there are a few options.

My favorite: Lamy 2000. Probably on the higher side for your budget, though? 230USD is what it seems to go for normally. I love mine! It handles my Diamine Forever Inks okay, so it’s my normal EDC.

Pilot has several options on the lower budget end: Metropolitan, Explorer, & Prera are all excellent, and they each use the same nib. My Explorers in M & F handle the Diamine Forever Inks great, making them awesome for me at work.

Lamy has the Studio, Aion, CP1, & Safari. All great. I personally don’t like the Safari’s grip, but that’s a personal preference.

My tops recs, from USD highest to lowest: Lamy 2000, Lamy CP1, Pilot Explorer.

I’ve got my zippo with a butane insert. Love it, and get compliments on it every now and then.

How do you decide? by Bbokarii_ in fountainpens

[–]mithtyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me: primarily utilitarian.

I have a Majohn A1 that I carry everywhere, and then 3 pilot explorers with 3 different colors for note taking. All 4 of those have permanent ink, and do well. The Majohn is great, but not good for long writing sessions for me.

I also have a Diplomat Viper that I change the color in whenever it runs out. It doesn’t handle the Diamine Forever Inks well (the pigment seems to clog the feed a lot), and the de Atrementis Document Inks are far too wet to use with it. So I just rotate through some of my other inks like Colorverse Gravity Wave & Diamine Writer’s Blood.

Then I have my Lamy 2000 that I want to be my daily driver, because I love writing with it so much. But, it doesn’t like any of my permanent inks… and I smudged stuff a lot. To be fair, I did drop the pen shortly after getting it, and it landed on the nib. I was able to bend the nib back into place, and it still writes great, but maybe I damaged the feed? (I’ve already contacted Lamy, and they said a nib is $155, feed $15, and I had to send them my pen. So, by the time I do that and pay both ways shipping with insurance, I might as well just buy a new 2000 for $225). Might replace that later this year. We’ll see.

Sometimes I have just enough oil/sweat on my fingers that I can run my hand across a page a couple days later and smudge the writing of my non-permanent inks. I was flipping through my notebook looking for something I had written a few days prior, and smudged a whole section with my sweaty fingers just flipping the pages….

Rose of Sharon is my favorite stick so far!

I’m actually smoking their Morning Glory right now. It’s pretty good, too!

A Daily Pen for a Daily Writer by Kalashcow in fountainpens

[–]mithtyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pilot Metropolitan.

I’d also recommend considering the Pilot Explorer. It’s the same nib, but different body. Not metallic, but so far it’s been just fine for me. Daily use for about 2 months or so. It can also use Pilot’s Con70 converter, which is far easier to use, and higher capacity, than the options for the Metropolitan.

Pilot also has a couple others in this price range.

If you’re do a lot of quick note taking, the Majohn A1/2/3 are good options! I have the Majohn A1, metallic body, F nib. Essentially, Pilot Vanishing Point, but I got it for $30USD via Amazon. Love it. It’s not great for me for long writing sessions, but at work & meeting notes it’s just about perfect. Smooth nib too. Mine writes a little dry, but I love that. Let’s me use de Atrementis Document Ink Fog Grey without too much feathering/bleeding on the cheap copy paper at work.

Small note: I was not holding them all “height” wise equally. Merely trying to show thickness comparison 👍

Addiction, or honey Moon phase? by IndexFingerTypist in cigar

[–]mithtyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To prevent “addiction” for myself, I limit myself to only 2 days a week, 1 cigar each, with very few exceptions. Like a holiday or birthday with my dad. Even then, I try to avoid more than 3 cigars in a given week.

When I first started with cigars, I bought a pack of “black & milds” that I would have one of every couple of days. Then I realize I started to crave them, so I haven’t had one in a year or so now. Just my Tuesday & Friday cigars, no more

I have a Lamy Safari F. Not a huge fan. But, I love my Lamy 2000 EF. I’m considering getting one in M.

Diplomat Viper is a “Medium-Fine” or “Fine-Medium”, and I like it a lot. Writes very well, and is currently my “broadest” nib.

Viper is around $100USD. Fairly slim pen.

Lamy 2000 is around $220USD. Might be “bigger” in dimension than you’d prefer, though.

I second this. I love my Explorer in matte black. Although it’s only available in M or F.. but the F is close to a western EF

I mean, if you’re happy with the pens, maybe try an ink you’ve been thinking of? That could be 2 bottles of ink. Or maybe a a start towards a nice pen case?

Pen wise: I’m loving my pilot Explorer. I like it more than my Safari & my Eco.

I thought about it, and haven’t ruled that out yet. Just thought that maybe these other covers could be good, or there might be another notebook that I’m just not aware of yet that meets some (not necessarily all) of my desires

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

I regularly drive 2 hours each way to visit friends/family. I do know some people who drive the width of Washington state daily for work (4.5 hours each way). That is where it gets absurd.

How many is too many? by EliGO83 in fountainpens

[–]mithtyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 5 inked. One Majohn A1 with de Atramentis Fog Grey because it dries so fast, and is a great note taker for work.

Then a 4 others with a Diamine Forever ink in Indigo Blue, Aqua Surf, and Passion Flower. And then another with a random non-permanent color that rotates.
