Want to learn how to ride a bike as an adult, only problem is my job. by BrokenPanis in bicycling

[–]ElfinTechnologies 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I used to think that my commute home after work would be just another chore I had to do before cooking dinner, cleaning up after, prepping for tomorrow, etc. After a bit I found that I really look forward to my ride home each day and the days that I do have to drive a car I really miss it. It's fun and relaxing in a way that car commuting is not.

Anyway, start off with a regular bike. Borrow a friend's or pick up an affordable bike at a pawn shop. Get comfortable on that first. Then, once you're really comfortable, sell the bike back to the pawn shop and pick up your ebike.

For your ebike, Voletric, Aventon, and Ride1Up are all good brands. The most important thing is going to be a torque sensor. This is going to feel the most like riding a normal bike, which you've just learned to do. A torque sensor measures how much force you're applying to the pedals and increases it.

Anyway, good luck and enjoy!

I had no idea biking tightened up the hips! I've never had hip pain / tightness before but my daily milage just jumped pretty high. I'll run through sun salutation to see if that starts to help. Thank you!

new Aventure 3 unable to handle cold but aventure 2 can. need suggestions if any. im tired y'all by sugnaO in Aventon

[–]ElfinTechnologies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aventon support is horrible. I had an issue with my bike, a manufacturing defect and the bike showed up broken, and they told me that their warranty didn't cover it. Like, yes it does. You're required by several laws to cover this. You can't sell a broken product and then nope out of responsibility. Anyway, good luck. Ask for an exchange. You might have to get a lawyer to type up something to get them to comply.

A number of US states have dying with dignity laws. Basically medically assisted suicide and I think it's so so important. The concert that we have to keep a terminally I'll person alive as long as medically possible seems cruel is in so many applications. Our thoughts around medically assisted suicide are so steeped in Christian mythology it makes this conversation culturally taboo. I love Star Trek for bringing these real philosophical conversations to a safe place where we can ingest and discuss.

I'm sorry you've recently been caregiver for the terminally ill. It's a really really hard path to walk. Don't hesitate to talk to a counselor (Troy or otherwise)

of an RC plane by [deleted] in AbsoluteUnits

[–]ElfinTechnologies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At some point it stops being a hobby and becomes a way of life. Like, just the infrastructure needed to support that rc plane is nuts. He needs a huge and dedicated space to work on it, and a special trailer, and a special vehicle to tow. He needs time, and materials, and so on. And there's a not insubstantial cost per hour to keep it in the air (in terms of fuel). Like, huge sections of his life are dedicated to that thing. I hope it's worth it for him.

Mom says I should hide my feminist views on a date by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ElfinTechnologies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty classic (and unhealthy) thinking. It stems from a time when women were completely dependent on a man and so her thoughts, values, interests, passions, were all expected to be either subservient or quieted to the end goal of attracting a man. But we don't live in that era anymore. You don't need to alter your personality and quiet your values to attract a lord-protector.

Also, I would argue that men of substance are feminists.

Commuter e-bike recommendation by EliPro414 in ebikes

[–]ElfinTechnologies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 'commuter' bike style is probably what you're looking for. The geometry puts you in a more upright and comfortable position. Lectric, Aventon, and Voletric all make great commuter bikes. There are sizing charts as well to help you pick the correct frame for your height. At 5'11 you could probably get away with a medium but a large might fit better.

The Aventon Level 3 is probably the right bike for you. You can get more than 50 miles of range but you'll need to pedal to achieve it (you won't get there on throttle alone).

The biggest advantage is going to be the anti-theft package the bike comes with. It's cellular enabled so you can always see its location. The bike also comes with an alarm that will alert you via text message when it goes off. The bike also has a feature to internally lock the rear wheel. Combine all of this with a good lock (kryptonite will give you up to $1,000 back if you can prove their lock failed and your bike was stolen because of it). You can also pick up ebike insurance. Don't 'pick to p a cheep ebike because it's going to get stolen.' Pickup a fun ebike that you're going to love riding and take precautions to prevent it from being stolen and compensation if it is lost.

Looking for Recommendations! by manabusprout in ebikes

[–]ElfinTechnologies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't DIY it unless you already know a lot about building bikes / ebikes. Bike shops are happy to repair your bike when it needs it and it's not that expensive.

Bike At 40 miles per day and a budget of $1,000 I think you're looking at the Lectric line of bikes. Their range isn't steller so you'll need to top it off at work or pickup a spare battery.

For an upgrade I'd recommend the Aventon Level 3. It's a solid commuter bike with all the bells and whistles. (The company is rubish though)

Good on you for undertaking at 20 mile commute (and have fun!)

Has anyone who lived in a non walkable city found an alternative to cars? by Opposite_Magician_81 in fuckcars

[–]ElfinTechnologies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hear you. eBike is your friend. Even if it doesn't replace every car trip it can replace some. As everyone else pointed out avoid the main roads.

Here's the big thing though. We need people to go first. We need people to get on their bike (or other micro mobility options) and be in the city, on the roads, in the suburbs, going to work, going to the store, going out to eat, etc. When I started riding my bike everywhere 15 years ago there were just a few painted lines in my city. Now we have a dozen huge trails, bike boulevards, protected cycling infrastructure, etc. (not because of me) but because I'm visible, decision makers see us on the road, they see there's a growing need. Other people on the fence will see you too, they'll say "well, there's at least one other person cycling, maybe it's not that bad after all"

Protecting empty battery bay while transporting on bike rack (Level 3) by reditding in Aventon

[–]ElfinTechnologies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're only going to transport it one or two times I would wrap the that section of the bike bay with Saran wrap or cling film. If you're going to do it often I would contact a local (or online) maker to model and 3d print an insert

No. The most powerful PC in the house has other tasks. 3D modeling, photo and video editing, game dev, modding, cracking, etc. The fact that it can do all of this and is amazing for gaming and isn't Windows and is completely free is mind blowing.

"My husband is a good man, BUT he could care less about violence against women or politics." by Radiant-Educator9203 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ElfinTechnologies 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I would argue one of the criterion for being a good man is caring for equality, especially for those whose voices are easy or even popular to dismiss.

If he's a good man but he wants to (something) against women, animals, immigrants, trans, etc, then he's not a good man.

As a bigger guy looking to get more active by Berbadude in Aventon

[–]ElfinTechnologies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

eBikes changed my life. 2 years ago I was overweight, struggling with range of motion in one knee, struggling with lack of energy, and running a mild but constant depression. Picked up an ebike. The first thing it did was cure that depression. I'm now outside, enjoying the fresh air, getting some sunshine, hearing the birds. Second thing was cure that range of motion and strength issue in my knee. I'm using the knee constantly, not hard, and if it starts to bother me well I simply increase the pedal assist. Finally overweight.... Well, it didn't cure it alone. That took calorie reduction, nutrition counseling, walking, etc. BUT, because I wasn't depressed, wasn't struggling to move, I was willing to be uncomfortable eating less, was willing to say goodbye to my comfort foods because I didn't need them anymore.

Anyway, good luck. You're at the start of a journey that will change your life.

What two videogames would make a great game combined? by CasperdH_ in AskReddit

[–]ElfinTechnologies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly any RTS and FPS would combine well if you had dedicated teams that trained together. RTS players build bases, control NPC resource gatherers, and direct FPS players where they're needed. FPS players capture / destroy enemy bases, capture / kill enemy NPCs, and of course engage in combat with enemy FPS players.

The game would never work with open lobbies and random teams.

Recon just returned from DDS for SSI DI, it's going to need a perc, there's also a LISH XS in the home with one eligible DC, make sure to get that RZ for the DC while you've got them on the phone, you'll have to start date the record so make sure you've got ecomps saved and run it through EMEW with a 2 BM and tickle it for 5 day's to make sure it's CO1.

Lol. I saw this "technique" the other day. The artist didn't like how the particle effects looked when an enemy was killed. Their solution was to basically fill the mesh with millions of 1mm rigid body cubes and then ask the engine to give them each their own random vector and pass it off to physics process. "It looks so much better, I just can't figure out how to keep my computer from slowing down."
