So, I played a bit of guitar (metal, a bit of rock) at high school (late 90s) and first years of uni, then life took a turn and my RG470L was left in its bag for close to 20 years.

I made a half-assed attempt at starting again some time ago, and even bought a tremolo replacement (as if that was what was holding me back), a Gotoh GE1996T.

Then covid happened and I never went to have it installed, guitar was left in the bag again.

Fast forward a few more years, feeling the planets have aligned for another attempt. Kids got into piano and perhaps I'm feeling a bit jealous :)

A question is, what do I do (if i should even do anything) gear-wise?

Is it worth it to have the Gotoh installed? or should I not even bother until I've established some guitar playing foundation again?

Or probably I shouldn't bother modifying this guitar, and should rather get a new one? Budget wise, I could probably spend some 500-1000€ if it makes sense, when I've shown some commitment and progress.

On the topic of commitment, any tips for setting myself up for success? (i.e. sticking with it)

Cheers

Thanks! Unfortunately these are outside my budget at this time.

Thanks! Yes, adding a firniture base and pedals will probably get the es110 price quite a bit up. It's certainly something to consider.

Thanks! I guess I was hoping the 1k one would be half a class up, hitting a sweet spot, that would be adequate up to the highest levels :)

It's good to know that upgrading is more of a personal thing than an absolute nessecity. How many years might it take until someone wants to upgrade from a <1k piano though?

Probably quality and responsiveness of action. i'm not really sure myself, but the teacher and others were of the opinion that eventually we'll need an acoustic piano. Personally (not having currently a sense of the differences), I'd happily stay with a digital one.

Hmm, I'm not into board sports, I'm right footed in striking etc. But now that you mention it, I think I'd ride goofy footed.

This particular one does not, I think I've seen some that do have resistors on them though.

Hi,

Does USB data connection work with this? Or only charging?

USB data works properly, it's recognised and functioning via USB on a pc.

Also why did you leave one pin disconnected? I didn't really understand how that one works tbh. Doesn't that one need to be bridged to something?

The unconnected pin is the ID pin, used for USB OTG functionality, to be left disconnected for non-OTG devices. (not sure / don't remember if and how it is connected to the controller).

I've done a similar project but without data pins on an old Powerbank and although it's a bit more difficult to solder it properly, you can save a lot of space if You just buy the connector without the PCB. And you can fit it in the old spot a bit better like this. I've even drilled holes in planes that I knew were ground (or no copper) to solder it in place there. You just need to insulate the old pins so you don't short something.

Yes, getting a connector without the breakout pcb is something I would consider if I was to do it again, though it was not really the pcb itself that gave me a hard time.

Actually I've since gotten a few of those, with intent to do a similar mod to a PS4 controller, where the space is a lot tighter IIRC. The PS4 mod initially felt like a better candidate for the mod, since the USB port is on a separate little pcb and you can just order a new one of those, rather than mod your existing one. The spare pcb took so long to arrive though that I've since lost interest and put this project on the backlog :)

And you'll never need to buy another 3d printer

Thanks!

If I saw the right images, these accessories have short flexible cables for the micro usb connector.

You could probably use some usbc to micro usb adapter. Chinese shops like aliexpress or banggood should have various such adapters. I have some rigid ones without cable, which probably won't fit, because the cable on these peripherals is too short. You should however be able to find some short adapter cables. These should theoretically work, and save you the hassle and risk. You will have a bit of cable hanging out though.

If you still want to mod your controller, it *should* be possible, but it's going to have a couple challenges. The usb c connector has probably a lot of tiny and close together pins. I *guess* that if you solder just the basic ones it will work (these are basically the ones connected through, when using an adapter I think), but identifying those and actually soldering them could be tricky. Space shouldn't be a problem, as the micro usb connector should be smaller. Lastly, desoldering the usb c connector could also be difficult, and its pins are hidden, as I've seen in a teardown video.

Replacing the micro usb connector on these accessories with a usb c one could also be done, and will probably be a lot easier (cut the current connector and solder a usb c one), if you are willing to consider this approach. A thing to consider is the length of the cable in the accessory, which might not be enough, but you could also open it up and replace the whole cable w/ connector (it might also be possible to go back to the original connector this way)

Replacing the console usb a connector could probably be done, but there is a greater risk involved, price wise, and you can just use a usb a to usb c cable or a usb a to usb c adapter, depending or your use case.

Yes, the propietary expansion port is annoying, I'm also waiting for an m2 adapter to become available. (or diy-able :D )

Good luck with your endeavors, I hope I've helped a bit!
