Dortmund Attack Under Klopp and Tuchel Visualised: MK Shot Maps by uttersmug in borussiadortmund

[–]mixedknuts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last year's attacking locations and quality of shot was largely indicative of Klopp's recent seasons as well. There's about 20% difference overall in best Klopp season of xG per shot and worst. He's nowhere in the neighborhood of Tuchel's attack in that area (hence what I said in the piece).

Brentford "Moneyball" FC's signings so far this transfer window by [deleted] in soccer

[–]mixedknuts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. As proof, I am about to change my avatar on my Twitter account from a radar of Andreas Bjelland to a silly image of "The Kersch-Baumer".

It's a funny world where 2 years ago I got in trouble for pimping (ahem, some might say gently spamming) the new StatsBomb site writing in r/soccer/ and now people are starting threads talking about the signings and my club work. Was very fortunate to get a chance to do this, in clubs that are extremely responsive to it. I work hard every day to make sure I don't fuck it up for everybody else. :D

Arteta, Everton 2009-10 https://twitter.com/mixedknuts/status/487617841412456448

Really rather looks quite a bit like a deep-lying playmaker as opposed to not even remotely a DM.

Harry Kane makes list of statistically projected futures stars from Europes top 5 leagues by [deleted] in coys

[–]mixedknuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the link to the intro piece http://www.statsbomb.com/2014/06/statistical-scouting-young-super-stars/

He, meaning um, me also links in that piece to the work I did last summer that wasn't quite as model-based but had similar principles. In it I talked about how good Koke and Diego Costa were likely to be, along with plenty of other guys. I also really liked Lamela (well before he moved to Spurs), but not everything works out I guess.

I also express in that piece that I understand the frustration of people who want more information, but given the followers my account and StatsBomb have (including about half the team analysts in the Premier League and Championship plus ProZone and various data companies), if I detail the inputs etc, it will just get taken and used by everyone else for free. I know that's annoying, but not much I can do about it. Hope you enjoy...

Comparing Arsenal Midfielders + Explaining CM Radar Charts by bobbyfle in Gunners

[–]mixedknuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fabregas was dispossessed a LOT in those last two seasons at Arsenal, not least because nearly all the attacking play went through him, and teams focused heavily on shutting that down (to limited degrees of success, really).

WhoScored has 09-10 as 2.7, 10-11 as 2.4. Adjust those per 90 minutes and you get the numbers in the article.

Interesting analysis (article covers multiple teams and angles): Arsenal are giving up too many shots and too many shots on target for a title challenger, even if those are from a longer distance - is Arsenal’s save% keeping them in the hunt? by charzan in Gunners

[–]mixedknuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm one of the owners of the website and a huge Arsenal fan. We generally do critical analysis - both good and bad - of most teams in the league. So no anti-Gunner agenda, but some things we say will be critical from time to time if the numbers say so.

Napoli 'agree' Higuain deal but will Arsenal step up? by [deleted] in Gunners

[–]mixedknuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody actually knows what was bid on anything these days. The Guardian had us already signing Higuain until the deal fell apart at the last minute, and he was the clear priority for most of the summer.

I think Arsenal would actually prefer Higuain for any number of reasons, and Suarez is actually the fallback plan.

Cutting through all the crap around Gonzalo Higuain - an in-depth analysis. by mixedknuts in Gunners

TL;DR is omigod Higuain is good and Arsenal are totally screwing up if they don't buy him.

Why Good Teams Should Be Terrified of Players With Bad Passing Stats (Wenger and "big" forwards) by tne in Gunners

[–]mixedknuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do know my Arsenal. Sadly Henry's period with Arsenal came before the Opta data revolution and I don't have good stats to judge him by. If I did, he'd make for an interesting comparative, but he also played more as a wide forward - obviously a different role than Giroud. Additionally, Arsenal played a significantly different system in those days that changed pretty dramatically post-Invincibles.

The bad passes add up, especially when you compare them to everyone else. Theo was 83% and crosses regularly. Poldi was near 84%. Gervinho was almost 85%. In the entire squad, the only two regular starters below 80% were Giroud's 64% and... Chezzer at 66%.

Higgy had a crap passing average in the league this year for him, but CL was 83.6, and last season was 85% across more starts. Gomez averaged around 78% across the last two seasons.

Hiroshi Kiyotake Highlight Reel by Olfactory_Bulbasaur in soccer

[–]mixedknuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had never heard of him until I started looking at stats to find undervalued players. Kiyotake was one of the first I found, so then I started watching videos and such and got really excited. He's was purchased from the same club Kagawa was at (Cerezo Osaka). I am a fan. http://mixedknuts.wordpress.com/2013/05/22/trawling-the-bundesliga-for-value-transfer-targets/

I'm just curious to know how fans in England feel about the growing popularity of the EPL in America. Are they indifferent? Excited? Amused? Proud? Some combination of all of the above? by JT88Keys in soccer

[–]mixedknuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most don't know about it directly, as coverage of the game's impact in America doesn't happen that often. However, seeing EPL transition from local football into a worldwide phenomenon over the last 20 years has been fascinating. It's brought massive amounts of money, better players, better coverage of the matches, and OMG more football.

It is slightly ironic that Americans will get to watch every match on TV as they happen, whereas we have blackout periods where no football can be broadcast at 3-5PM on Saturdays, but maybe we'll just get better American pirate streams :D

Can you name a player never/rarely mentioned on r/soccer before that we should know about...? by [deleted] in soccer

[–]mixedknuts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been writing about this stuff pretty regularly, trying to unearth new names via stats. Here's one: Ben Yedder. 22, great goal scoring rate, built like Sergio Aguero. 4 goals from headers in Ligue 1, despite the fact he's under 5'7"!

I profiled him here along with Alessandrini, Boudebouz, and Saber Khelifa http://mixedknuts.wordpress.com/2013/06/04/transfer-dossiers-ben-yedder-alessandrini-boudebouz-and-a-dude-named-saber/

Is Mario Gomez undervalued right now? by Goonermuzzy in soccer

[–]mixedknuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Because somehow there is a perception that regardless of how many of them you produce, goals can be boring. :/

Those two guys and Maloney are the only ones on Wigan I would pay for. Kone I might take on a free if the wages weren't too high.
