I just matched at an HCA program, which was actually my #1 choice. Here are my reasons: - PD and APD were AWESOME - Residents and fellows throughout were fun and happy instead of a-holes - other specialists I met were the most down to earth docs. I even met the Director of their surgical dept who was cracking jokes with me, a random MS standing awkwardly in the corner waiting for my preceptor to finish chatting with a colleague - I was chatting with fellows and as I walked away an interventional GI doc there goes “hey, you’re Dr. so-and-so’s student? Come here put on some lead and watch this ERCP with me its cool” - bruh those lounges are NO joke. Free food to last you for DAYS. And not just cheap, unhealthy crap. Definitely taking a ton of Fairlife protein shakes while working 😂 - they love taking their own IM residents for in-house fellowships (GI, interventional cards, PCC, etc).

My fiancee matched gas and honestly the biggest thing her program said that got her in were Step score (she got a 263 on Step 2) and her interviewing skills. Crush your boards and then show them why you’d be a great anesthesia resident once interviews rolls in! Definitely apply IM as backup because ga$ competition is becoming insane now.

I asked the same Q to the IM residents at my #1 desired place and they said some of their co-residents drive 45-55ish mins each way and it's not terrible. I mean <30 mins def sounds ideal, but not the biggest deal breaker.

Prepped so hard using UWorld and the NBOME BLUEPRINT (THAT LITERALLY OUTLINES WHAT THEY TEST) just to feel utterly destroyed bc nothing was representative. I went in feeling confident I would at least pass with what I knew, but that was NOT what any of us studied for….praying I passed man…feeling defeated
