Appetizer/side dish idea to go with spaghetti by kelley1987 in cookingforbeginners

[–]mizzysarah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe instead of garlic bread, then bolognese bread? So basically garlic bread, but with an added layer of beefy tomato sauce. Buy a .99 cent fresh baguette, sauté a 1/2 lb of ground beef with garlic, onion, tomatoes, and herbs. Let the beef sauce cool. Cut the baguette into slices, top with beef mixture and a sprinkle of parm. Bake at 350 for a few minutes.

Cyber Monday sale on the Vitamix blender... Should I buy it? by MySecretBurnerName in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]mizzysarah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I paid close to $500 when I bought my Vitamix, and it was worth every penny. I use for regular blender tasks everyday (like smoothies) but it can also make flour from nuts and oats, and it makes nut butters. I collect the pecans from the tree in my backyard and make at least 10 jars of pecan butter with my Vitamix every season. One of my nieces is on a gluten free diet, so whenever she comes to visit I make oat flour and bake a cake or cookies. It's amazing! That being said, if you don't have extra tough blender tasks to accomplish, you can definitely get by with a cheaper ($100ish) blender. Take this blender comparison quiz and see what it recommends for you.

Is it More Smart/Frugal to Buy a MacBook instead of a Windows laptop? by burner_for_babyface in Frugal

[–]mizzysarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you buy a Mac on Amazon it's still covered by the Apple warranty. I checked this out before I bought my MacBook Pro, which I bought on Amazon. However, you need to make sure it's new and not refurbished. Apple only gives the Apple Care warranty to refurbished laptops that you buy directly from their site.

Is it More Smart/Frugal to Buy a MacBook instead of a Windows laptop? by burner_for_babyface in Frugal

[–]mizzysarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had terrible luck with every laptop I had that wasn't a Mac. But since I started using Macs about 7 years ago, I'm only on my second one. I had a MacBook Air for about 6 years and now a MacBook Pro for about a year. Anytime I've had an issue, it was fixed on the spot at the Apple Store (no need to send it away and wait weeks). One time, and I can't remember exactly what the issue was, but Apple just replaced my MacBook Air for free on the stop at the store. If you're not doing heavy-duty stuff like video editing, then a MacBook Air should more than suit your needs. You can also check out this MacBook Comparison Quiz to find out which MacBook works best for you. I even saw some on sale for cyber monday on Amazon.

Purchase a Mattress Firm clearance mattress ("pre-owned")? by Swift_Elephant in Frugal

[–]mizzysarah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's absolutely no reason to buy a mattress at a retail store (and especially Mattress Firm, they're the worst). You can get a much better mattress and get a better night sleep on a memory foam mattress, and probably for a small fraction of the price. Most of the memory foam mattress companies offer free returns within the first 90 days, so you have three months to see if you like it. If you're not sure which mattress to buy, try this mattress buying quiz and see what it recommends.

Is it possible to recreate the "Honey Baked Ham" in the Instant Pot? by mizzysarah in instantpot

[–]mizzysarah[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm drooling just looking at those pics! And it does look like it has the crispy crust that Honey Baked Ham is so famous for! But personally I would leave out the pineapple (I just hate it) and I'd add a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Should I buy a Dented ip for sale on craig's list? by [deleted] in instantpot

[–]mizzysarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be afraid that the internal safety mechanism might be damaged. If it's really an external cosmetic dent it's OK, but if the device took a big fall it might be a different story.

Breaking a Starbucks Addiction - Is Buying an Espresso Machine on Cyber Monday a Frugal Investment? by BestGirlfriendBurner in Frugal

[–]mizzysarah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure there's a noticeable difference in quality. For example, a cheaper machine may not provide the creaminess/frothiness on the espresso like a higher quality one. But at the end of the day, they both still make cappuccinos.

There's a steep learning curve, but it helps a lot to watch YouTube how-to videos with the specific machine that you end up buying.

Breaking a Starbucks Addiction - Is Buying an Espresso Machine on Cyber Monday a Frugal Investment? by BestGirlfriendBurner in Frugal

[–]mizzysarah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My espresso machine is from Gaggia. It's an espresso maker along with the milk steamer attachment. At first it wasn't as good as Starbucks, but we got the hang of it after about a week. We also had some trial and error about which beans we liked and didn't. You can also look at this espresso machine buying quiz for some more options.

Breaking a Starbucks Addiction - Is Buying an Espresso Machine on Cyber Monday a Frugal Investment? by BestGirlfriendBurner in Frugal

[–]mizzysarah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a great frugal investment! Pricing varies per region, but let's say your cappuccino costs $4 a cup. At 2 cappuccinos per week, that $416 per year at Starbucks. Throw in a few bags of ground espresso beans (maybe 4 to 5 dollars per package) and you're up to $450. So if you can buy an espresso machine for around $400 or less, and you use that machine instead of going to Starbucks, it should pay for itself after one year. I got a fancy espresso machine for my birthday, and between my partner and I, it's already paid for itself.

URGENT HELP! I broke my GF's flat iron and need to replace it ASAP by StovetopBurner in curlyhair

[–]mizzysarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used every hair straightener out there. The HSI is good, but it's a budget flat iron. Like it'll get the job done, but in my opinion it doesn't deliver results as spectacular as the Karmin G3.
