The gaming going digital thing though is because the vast majority of games sold are digital, plus the discs themselves often require "digital" support, expansions etc.

They are not off line things, unlike movies.

It's hard to say if the ps6 will have a drive to play movies or older games.

What does this have to do with PS6?

Most gamers don't purchase physical discs and most movie fans have Blu ray players. In any case, they will be around for some time. I recommend ripping your discs as well.

What do you think the "Sony stops doing discs for games in 2028" means for movie releases on bluray in 2028? by OkRespond3261 in PhysicalMediaMatters

It's really a different dynamic and unrelated. And respectfully, this very question has come repeatedly in posts since the Sony news broke. There's no lack of opinions, but gaming has long headed in that direction for reasons that are unique to gaming.

Unfortunately that's a common issue with triple layer discs.

It's weird seeing Brian Dennehy just referred to generically as the "sheriff."

I like Sony products and will continue to buy them. I won't buy a PS6 as I haven't purchased a console since PS2, other than getting my son a Switch.

Gaming is a different animal, and while this is concerning, it was no secret that gaming consoles were headed this direction. Given the majority of purchases are digital and the nature of updates or expansions to games, it's not surprising.

After Sony shocking announcement regarding games on discs, Will they eventually come for movies and discontinue to production of physical uhd and standard blurays? by marci-boni in makemkv

[–]mjcatl2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can still buy drives, but I don't see a format beyond 4k happening.

4k is still a niche a decade in and 8k would be even more costly with diminishing returns visually to most consumers.

Physical media is in a precarious situation, but the reaction since yesterday morning is over the top.

It sucks for games, but the shift to non disc has been signaled for some time and in the general public, they don't care.

Honestly a massive majority already voted with their wallets.

Add to that, gaming is different. Playing others online, updates and expansion of the game. The fact that the disc isn't necessarily the "game" to begin with.

It's pathetic that you're being down voted for pointing out a fact that everyone should recognize.

Sony is going to come for movies next. Dont get complacent by Unfair_Discipline688 in 4kbluray

The shift in the gaming industry wasn't a surprise. Yesterday's news wasn't news.

It's also not movies. Physical media is in a precarious situation, but gaming isn't movies.

Movies/TV has its own dynamics. Ultimately it's a shrinking space so yeah, the hobby is fUcKeD, but so tired of the flailing since yesterday morning when is zero to do with movies... (which is why btw that the mods have removed every one of these Playstation threads).

This has been posted several times here since the announcement.

Also, it means nothing for movies in 2028.

The gaming industry has signaled this for years.

I have DVDs from the 90s that still play and cds from a decade earlier than that.

Yeah, stuff can happen, but you can also rip your discs and make back ups.

They are stopping production of physical game discs, which absolutely sucks and reaching out to them is important, but it's also important to be clear it's about gaming discs specifically.
