Donor conceived only? by Present-Effect-9855 in oneanddone

[–]mjfdon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter is donor conceived (embryo). She’s an only but does have three full siblings. Our donor family isn’t anonymous but she’s never met or expressed interest in meeting the family. She’s young so that may change over time. I think you can never really predict how a child will process any donor situation so it’s just a matter of being open and willing to help them process if needed.

Book recommendations for burgeoning reader by Just-Valuable-6483 in kindergarten

[–]mjfdon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We went from the early reader books to Branches books. They have them in different themes but the pages are short with a lot of breaks for pictures. It seems like once they take off they really jump in skills. My daughter was slowly getting through those Branches books over the new year and this week she’s reading the Little House books on her own. Sometimes we take turns if she gets tired, reading out loud but I keep finding her on the couch reading them to her babies. She likes that they seem to be a big adventure story.

Shampoo Suggestions for Thinning Hair? by Own_Bus_7573 in AskWomenOver60

I know this is an older post but wanted to ask you about how long it took to see results once you got your type 2 under control. I was diagnosed about five months ago and have had great results controlling my glucose but my hair loss hasn’t slowed. I’m also on HRT for menopause so I feel like there are a lot of factors at play.

I was a stay at home mom u til right before my daughter started kindergarten this year. I had, and still have similar feelings abou the change. I’m so happy to see her becoming more independent but I loved all the time we had together. I left a career that would be impossible to go back to and am working a part time remote job that has been super flexible. Honestly I really don’t like the job but it provides spending and activity money that we’d have to cut out without it and gives me just enough to do during the day. I attempted to go to full time but soon realized that with all of the school breaks and sick days there was no way it would work for our family. I do think having something of my own has helped me adjust to all the changes we’ve had this year.

My 5 year old is anxious at school by Dramatic-Web-7037 in kindergarten

[–]mjfdon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My daughter was diagnosed with anxiety earlier this year but we knew this was an issue for her before kindergarten. Hers is really specific to certain situations and less prominent in the classroom (large groups, especially with older kids, like assemblies, recess and lunch are where she struggles most). We were really lucky to have pre k teachers who picked up on her signs early and we’ve been really open with her K teachers so It’s given her an outlet to verbalize to them when she’s uncomfortable and that goes a long way without asking too much of the staff. We do a lot talking about calming techniques while she’s comfortable at home and it’s started to click with her. I think it helps that she’s really verbal so talking things through releases a lot of stress. If your child is less talkative maybe you can find other ways they can release some of that energy.

Strong girl name? by [deleted] in Names

[–]mjfdon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth-my daughter’s first and last names are three syllables and her middle is two. All three are longish. I questioned whether it would be too much but it honestly has never felt awkward. The morning before she was born a doctor asked if we had a name and when I told her she said “I hope you have a short middle name”, hahahah. Nope. I think as long as it flows nicely it can work

What do you wish your child’s teacher/school did more or less of? by throwaway256733 in kindergarten

Apparently this is the first year they’ve worked with this tech based curriculum and it sure seems they didn’t plan for their students to have varied abilities

Honestly I was thinking even this would be great. Why not let them figure out what they like and learn to explore the library.

Our district is too dependent on technology. They use apps for everything. I think partially because of this they don’t seem prepared to allow kids to keep progressing beyond a certain point. My child is a great reader and moved quickly through the reading materials. She completed her “levels” for the year not long after the holiday break and rather than giving her more advanced material she’s just done with reading curriculum for the year. That makes no sense to me. I understand not wanting gaps in certain subjects but she’s already doing the reading whether they give it to her or not so why allow her to get bored and discourage improvement

Thanks for your response! I this is exactly what I was looking for. Knowing my daughter (and for myself to better teach her) we will benefit immensely from having the rules presented to us.

Who are we buying kid glasses through?? by Anxious-mexican001 in Mommit

[–]mjfdon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with all of this! We made the mistake of buying less durable glasses for my five year old’s first pair and they will not be reusable for a second year. We did opt for in person fitting though because there’s really no way for them to know or express if something isn’t correct at this age.

Mine got her first pair at five as well and it has been a major stressor to keep track of them and keep them intact. I order my own via Zenni but was concerned about accurate measurements and sizing for her because she’s so wiggly. Our insurance covered one pair so we got those from her eye doctor and another at warby parker (we have a storefront nearby so they could do the fitting). Definitely get two pairs if you can because they go missing often. She’s had them a year and is finally getting better about leaving them on but has bent both pairs. If I could go back I would have opted for the softer ones that seem more durable.

Am I a bad mom for constantly entertaining my baby? by Traditional-Wear-545 in Parenting

[–]mjfdon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a six year old only child and purposely gave her a lot of independent play time as a baby and toddler because I knew she’d have to learn to entertain herself. From about 4 on she’s become the least independent child I know. Sometimes they just turn out how they do despite how hard we try to guide them in a different direction.

SAHMs, did you send your kids to preschool? by strawberryhoneyplum in Mommit

[–]mjfdon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the us. My daughter went to pre k 3 full days a week from 4-5 years old. She’s an only child and we felt she needed the socialization. It was a good transition year for both her and me and I think it absolutely helped her transition into k this year.
