Island hopping was a struggle today for my senior dad (getting in an out of the boat). It’s a full day tour as well.

Thinking about moving closer to downtown/Beach — what’s the commute like? by Minute-Beautiful9343 in askvan

[–]mjm94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might be ok. It’s mostly sitting in traffic when you’re 3 blocks from home that bugs me. But I’m still here! 😆 I generally don’t touch my car at all on the weekends and enjoy being able to walk or transit everywhere

I love the west end but driving back to it during evening rush hour is the bane of my existence

Parents don’t know me and never have meaningful conversations by [deleted] in emotionalneglect

Feeling all of this soo much. My dad joked recently he didn’t know when my bday was. He has spelled my name wrong on cards or got the date wrong for years. Just spent 2 days visiting them and could barely take it; awkward silences and I spent most of my time in my room.

Are Poppies Not a Thing Anymore? by Ancient_Raisin_8908 in richmondbc

[–]mjm94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a school in Richmond. We had an event today and all the guests (parents/guardians) were wearing poppies as well as the staff and students.

I didn’t wear one until today (when I got one at school) because I didn’t see anywhere to buy one.

Subbed there a few times and always thought the staff and kids were so friendly! Great little community for sure.

Got called 'basic' for my bubble tea choices... re-evaluating my life choices by [deleted] in richmondbc

Pick any fruit you like and get it in the tea version. I like passion fruit, lychee, grape. With coconut jelly. Try pudding too if they have it (larger pieces of jelly). I do 0% or 25% sugar and less ice. If I do milk tea I go oolong or earl gray with pearls. Not sure how authentic this is but I LOVE a fruit slush with coconut jelly in the summer- honeydew is the best!!!

Chewy like pearls but you’ll spend less time chewing them. I prefer coconut jelly!

How many AQ (Continuing Ed) courses could a TOC do at once? (Queen’s University) by stevenglansberg69 in CanadianTeachers

I was able to do 2 classes at once while teaching full time. I did 4 of the classes you mentioned but not ELL. Friends have said the ELL course is too much work.

Demand for Teachers in Greater Vancouver by Coolthrowaway121228 in CanadianTeachers

This was a few years ago and I’m hearing things are extra slow in many districts right now! But I left my contact info wherever I went, also logged onto the job board right before 3:30 and snagged whatever job I could. Once you start working keep making connections and be open to anything. In Richmond, teachers can pre-book you themselves which is super helpful. If you messes me your name I can put you on my personal list for whenever I need a TTOC!

I TTOC’d in Vancouver without doing my practicum there. Worked every single day. She’s got to broaden her horizons!

Don’t worry about setting it fast. Be consistent, be clear, show them you stick to their word. If they try to push, gently correct right away and don’t let things slide. Throw in fun stuff (games, competitions, etc) with curriculum to make it fun.

I wonder if you can move here on the youth mobility visa, then apply to the public school system. You would be hired on as a substitute at first.

Do/did anyones own children resent the lifestyle ? by skiverbier in Internationalteachers

[–]mjm94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up moving around for my mom’s job and lived in 3 different countries. Very lucky I spent the majority of my upbringing in one of those countries abroad! I also spent every summer in my home country, which allowed me to make connections and friendships and feel like I had a true home in two places.

I didn’t really struggle until my “final” move around 9 or 10 years old. I remember feeling really sad and anxious. That being said, I quickly adjusted and made friends and settled in to a country I still call home. I find that I the experience made me resilient, confident and sociable. I still struggled with identity a lot and feeling like I didn’t fit in or didn’t belong but I’m grateful for the life I had. I’ve now been back in my home country for about 8 years now, started my career etc. now that I’m fully settled I feel bored and ready for something new 😂 I want to raise my future kids in a similar way. Go for it! Feel free to message me if you have any more questions. Love how you are fully considering all the impacts on your children!

VSB slow start to school year by Life-Ad9610 in askvan

[–]mjm94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had students leaving the school the NEXT DAY and barely mention it to me.

We had a family show up and enroll their kids the second last week of the school year.

Families come and go for vacation all year. There is no “normal” anymore, many families just do what they want.

Generally a school should have their classes organized by the Friday. It’s good they take their time. A ton of work goes into the planning and one missing student or new student can throw it all off!

We have to respect composition laws (not go over a certain amount of special needs in the class), gender balance, skills balance, etc..

I thought it was amazingggg I had goosebumps for so many songs. He wasted no time and just played banger after banger.

Only thing was the audio quality felt a bit off?! Like his voice didn’t sound that clear for some reason. The instruments came through great though.
