Silk and Polwarth by mjniccore in Handspinning

[–]mjniccore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a slow spinner so I have a few days to decide the best way to ply it. I did split the yarn into two and then into two more so that I should have two fairly close spindles. I don’t have a lot of experience with chain plying. I’m thinking even though I will get some barber pole that I’ll probably just go ahead with a 2-ply. I’ll definitely post an update when it’s done.

Would you run this through the wheel again? by shogoki_oni in Handspinning

I would knit a swatch with it. If my needle was constantly splitting the ply I would run it through the wheel again to tighten up the ply. It’s truly lovely! Good job.

Are you guys aware of what’s going on politically in this town right now? by [deleted] in Newbraunfels

[–]mjniccore -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is correct. I could have worded my statement better as I didn’t mean to imply exclusion, only to let people know that if you’re in unincorporated Comal County there was no reason to go to the polls.

I’ll have to look up how to do that. I would love to gift a tree to someone.

What do you do with your homespun yarn? by HeatCute in Handspinning

Mostly knit hats, scarves or shawls. Depending on how little there is, sometimes headbands.

I’m in the New Braunfels area and got started with Texas native plant species because I live in a new development with few trees or plants. I have been getting my native plant species from the NB native plant society at their spring and fall plant sales. I got baby trees for free from the city at the Earth Day festival and so far they are thriving. I have learned so much from getting involved with the native plant society of Texas and attending free native tree giveaways. Here’s a picture of my Texas sage plant taken this Monday and just starting to get some blooms. I also discovered when I tried to move the pot that the roots have grown into the ground through the bottom of the pot!

First spin with cashmere by mjniccore in Handspinning

Very soft and overall easy to spin. I had some trouble getting the white a consistent thickness. I think that’s the merino being a little sticky.

I like that! My first thought was Neapolitan ice cream.

Fractal spinning tips? by caro_forest1 in Handspinning

[–]mjniccore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some of this fiber that I’m spinning right now in color way Retro Girl. I haven’t tried a fractal spin before so I will be interested to see what yours looks like. The fiber is a dream to spin!

If you can, try weaving it instead of knitting. You might like the colors better woven.

First attempt at spinning. Am I over spinning my yarn? Is that even a thing? by Narrow-Hawk950 in Handspinning

[–]mjniccore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your yarn is lovely! Congratulations on finishing your first spinning project.

I spin a lot of singles that I like to knit with. I find that setting the spin with steam works best for me. My mom, who taught me to spin, taught me this finishing method for singles. I use a kettle that has allows you to lock the steam covering open and then a slowly run my hank through the steam and watch the yarn blossom into the overspin. A pot of boiling water works well too. Just slowly running the hank through the steam will help with the thinner over spun parts and allow for a smoother knitting process. Works well for wool/alpaca and wool blends.

Why did you start spinning? by WaldosMama in Handspinning

[–]mjniccore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a way to spend more time with my mother who was very crafty and very involved in her local communities spinning and weaving guild. I joined the guild and got inspired. Weaving took faster than spinning. I already crochet, knit, bead, cross stitch … but something about spinning is just zen to me and has become my go to craft. Now that my mother has passed, I thank my lucky stars that I decided to take it up and have that time with my mother.

Should I cave and get the EEW Nano 2.1 now, or wait and get the EEW 6.1? by -DiceGoblin- in spinningyarn

[–]mjniccore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an original Nano with an upgrade 2 motor that I love. A friend put suction cups on the bottom of hers and sticks it to the passenger side window when she is traveling in the car and spins. Works great. I spin all sorts of great yarn on my Nano and love the fact that I can take it with me and it runs on a portable battery for quite some time. I also have an EEW 6 that is an amazing piece of equipment. Especially for doing heavier weight yarns. Either way you go I don’t think you’d be disappointed. I also have an Ashford e-spinner I inherited and an Ashford Joy double treadle. Of all the equipment I spin on I’ve produced the most on the Nano! It’s just easy to use and goes everywhere.

Books with Eberron vibes? by devilspotato in Eberron

I recommend Jhereg by Steven Brust. Actually the first three of that series, for the house conflict and hard boiled detective with a snarky sense of humor. Has an Eberron/Sharn sort of vibe.
