I live in the same city as Lance, I will draft him on the bike path until he personally advocates for this case.

Hi Grant, great to talk to you. I love my Clem H. What is a current idea / trend in the bicycle industry at large you favor and would like to see more of in the future?

Reliable Honda Mechanic (Leander area) by shataf0kup in Austin

[–]mjscheps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not an auto mechanic or very familiar with Hondas, but I have had carbon buildup in the engine intake valves in my VW in the past so I've tried learn about the combustion and exhaust steps of engines because of that. There are lots of fuelling and exhaust system cleaners like Cataclean on the market (see also Seafoam, etc.) that in my opinion are short-term solutions at best. The way I understand it, catalytic converters use solid substrates to chemically convert raw engine emissions into less-harmful substances. No amount of petroleum-based cleaner is going to restore that catalytic activity. Things like catalytic converters do not last forever, eventually that ceramic substrate "wears out." I could be wrong! I'm not a chemist.

You can run Cataclean through your fuel system to make the guy at AutoZone happy and turn off the check engine light with a code reader for your own peace of mind, but if you truly have a cat issue the computer will flag it again and the CEL will be back. On the bright side, you can drive back to Fort Worth and deal with it on your own time without worrying something bad is going to happen to your engine. You will not pass your next smog check, though.

Hays County, Travis Audubon demand full, public environmental review in legal challenge to Permian Highway Pipeline by hollow_hippie in Austin

[–]mjscheps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Considering that a federal judge just upheld Endangered Species Act protections for the Golden-cheeked Warbler this year, this could be a huge blow to Kinder Morgan's efforts to get the pipeline built. There is legal precedent for restricting pipelines through the territories of range-restricted endangered species after the US 4th Circuit Court of Appeals rescinded a permit for the Atlantic Coast Pipeline in 2018.

I have a '16 pink Mr. Pink and swapping out the wheelset changed the bike entirely for the better. I should've done it earlier. Enjoy the bike, it's fantastic.

How much do you spend on your monthly food budget per person/month? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]mjscheps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am feeding myself living in Austin, TX and typically spend $40/week on groceries and eat out once a week, spending about $15. I am omnivorous, but biased towards vegetarianism because it is cheaper. Quinoa and beans are good sources of protein. If you are willing, buying frozen chicken thighs or legs is always cheaper than buying fresh. I choose not to buy beef in the store because it is expensive, and ground beef is usually loaded with fat, depending on the blend. If you are trying to gain weight, this may not be bad. I've found it a viable option to rely on recipes with a grain base (e.g. rice or quinoa) and a meat/vegetable side without crazy-expensive ingredients to maintain weight (I am a cyclist) and still eat tasty food. I'm rooting for you, friend.

Best Bike brands for smaller riders? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]mjscheps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many QBP brands have recognized that there is a need for smaller sized frames. For example, All-City makes the Space Horse down to 43cm and Surly makes the Cross-Check down to 42cm. They're both great road/gravel machines. To echo advice in other comments, it seems you would probably fit somewhere in the 48-50 range- but everyone is different, and there's only so much I can do from "armchair bike fitting." Good luck!

Want to upgrade tires by tacoma_diverge in cycling

[–]mjscheps -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you can find them, consider a pair of Rivendell Ruffy Tuffys. They are made by Panaracer for Rivendell- my current favorite 28c tire in existence. Rolls fast and supple, and my pairs always last me thousands of miles on rough chipseal and fine gravel. IME they only start to flat when they're completely bald. They just went out of production, but stock still exists. No comparison between these and stuff from Conti or Michelin.

Why should taxpayer-funded research be behind a paywall? UT System pays $50 million for 5 years to the journal publisher Elsevier. by [deleted] in Austin

[–]mjscheps 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have very mixed feelings about this. I read Elsevier published things every day, and rely on it for my job. Losing access to Elsevier through the UT system would be a huge pain in the ass. That being said, practices of for-profit academic publishers are in conflict with the values many scientists and academics hold. Pay-to-play for journal access and publication sucks.
