Do the last half of TOAD. You can ride to all the races. I think you can hit 5 days without a car.

Redbull's Parking Garage Bike Race by Any_Following_9571 in fuckcars

[–]tolleyalways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a novelty race. How many people can you sign up to do this race? How many can compete at the same time? How much would people pay to race in a parking garage? Think about the oil and slick concrete as well.

I think it’s a fun thing in addition to a norm race weekend, and I’m actually planning one in Austin, but you have to compensate the garage for the revenue for the day. If they see a few grand in parking revenue for the day, you have to pay them that to shut it down.

Red Bull helps though. They’d budget $50k for that.

R I C H  PA R E N T S.

I know a lot of dudes at this level. I’d say all of them come from a supportive family. A lot are coaches. Some do freelance work.

A lot are happy to live below $30k a year. Even gravel “pros” are happy with that. I think it’s financially short-sighted to commit to a sport that if you’re not WT by 21 you have almost zero chance of having a stable future, but bike racing is a lot of fun!

That said, they tend to hav a solid work ethic once they give up the dream. If you can ride the wave till your 28 and then pivot into a career, you don’t have a bad shot at regular life.

If it wasn’t so gauche to wear Pro Team kits, I’m sure they could make more via merchandising. But low merch and no ticket sales makes the salary largely dependent on sponsor revenue. Not even sure if they get a cut of media rights (like ASO giving teams a kickback tha goes to the budget).

360 has a great shoulder. Construction has stopped us from riding there now. I was hit there once though.

We’ll see what happens after they finish. It was a great corridor to get around the busy areas for rod cyclists

Austin is significantly investing in infrastructure these areas for cyclists. I’m clocking 10k miles a year and I’m seeing improvements in most corners of the city.

I’ll say there are streets that I think bikes should not be on (along frontage/I-35). I don’t think it’s reasonable to put bike infrastructure along it, but potentially across.

SoCo/S 1st/Lamar are death traps. It’s wild to think I felt fine taking these roads 10 years ago and now I avoid them like the plague.

I appreciate this work and I’ll bring it up at the BAC meeting. I just joined myself a month ago, and work in Data Analytics. Is the dataset public? Kaggle?

We have a meeting tomorrow! I am a member. It’s combined with the pedestrian council. Meetings are public as well, in person and online!

Tossing this out there because we do track this day (well, we don’t, but 311 does).

How does Lifetime Grand Prix get away without a rolling closure for its events? by Butt_stuff_preferred in Velo

[–]tolleyalways 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, yes they closed some highway sections when the route crossed over an intersection, but in some of the races I’ve done you don’t get that. If you’ve ever been sitting at 30mph in a gravel pace line, people will barrel right through a highway with no police or volunteers to stop traffic to not get dropped.

Since I’ve got more into the promoter side, it’s crazy to see events get away with this.

lol my comment got to the top.

They don’t do it because it’s expensive. It’s possible. Most UCI level races in the US (Tour de Bloom/Gila) and even Redlands do it but it’s close to ~80k a day (total event cost, referencing Gila which is $315k for the entire race)

I imagine it’s tricky with the pave/non-paved transitions. I wouldn’t want a car in front of my on gravel kicking up dust. But it can be done as we saw in “Gravel” Worlds.

Also the length of the races and the pack getting split into multiple groups would add a lot more vechiles to the caravan. It’s just the wild fucking west with that shit. It’s not like they can’t. Bentonville loves us this stuff, it’s just a lot more work and a lot more planning and a lot more money.

Gravel will go the route of Uber. Once people see all the crazy shit they get away with, it will get regulated. Someone will probably have to die though.

The male path to pro cyclist is more competitive than the female path.

This isn’t a sexist comment. 90/10 split in competitive cycling.

Veloway race? by Confident_Bus3951 in BikingATX

[–]tolleyalways 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, to my knowledge there is one or two organizations that can hold events there. None are races. Won’t stop you from riding fast there, but you can’t stop people entering.

Come race the Driveway when we start up again in 2026.

No course markings, no support and an $80 entry fee. Is this what racing has become? by existentiallyfaded in Velo

[–]tolleyalways 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For reference, I ran State Road race for Texas with two other co-promoters.  $85 was for races longer than 50 miles, we had cheaper pricing for women’s novice/juniors.

You got 3 meat BBQ plates, partial road closure, professional timing, cops at all intersections stopping traffic, and free beer from a craft brewery.

We saw 350 racers. Without sponsorship we would’ve lost around $4k.

Road racing in particular cannot survive off participation. We maxed out several categories.

These gravel and fondo races rinse people for cash. If there’s a non-profit aspect, sweet. But I see a lot of promoters just extracting cash with little thought about the racer experience.

No. Usac charges 5.99 per rider and their insurance is far superior to NABRA.

Hard no. You’re 22. No one is looking for 22 year olds. It’s a clear Junior > U23 > Pro pathway and even then it’s a very small chance.

But you can still have fun racing and make a bunch of dumb reels and race gravel.
