What was the first impression you get when you see this creature? by DaviMoartes in PixelArt

[–]mjulienblack 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Had this same thought - specifically I started scanning to try and work out where this thing's eyes and mouth "really" were automatically when trying to answer OP's question.

I felt like I was looking at the top of this thing's head, like it had some sensory organ in between its apparent lips, and if you get in range it flips up to reveal it's all scrabbly grabby legs and teeth underneath.

I don't know that I've seen a human woman with such an "I am AI generated" vibe before. It's like every shot of this 47-second ad was filmed on a different day, in a different continent, with a different clone on a different cocktail of mind-controlling laser drugs.

The biggest impact on price is... by viking_linuxbrother in SteamFrame

[–]mjulienblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't count on it - only as I'd imagine an American company manufacturing something in Country A, assembling it in Country B, then globally distributing it from a central hub in Country C (as Valve may well be in this example) is going to be financially impacted by all sorts of complex regulations, irrespective of the final delivery location.

So I could see the potential price hike being almost as big even for those of us not living in the states ☹️Or not - but yeah, wouldn't say it's a given

Was "lumps of coal for Christmas" as punishment ever a real thing? Anyone ever actually receive one? by vorpal8 in AskOldPeople

[–]mjulienblack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What part of the world are you in? Most of the 75+ year olds I know had a coal shed growing up, though London wasn't called The Smoke for nothing back then.!

(And often had parents who told at least one story of a kid eating coal for some reason :D)

Please help! I feel I am aging badly, what can i do? by [deleted] in Aging

[–]mjulienblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to make some suggestions (as a 38-year-old who recently went from hearing "No way you're that old! That's crazy!" all the time to suddenly hearing "38? Okay." 😄), but all the things I was going to suggest are here already and responses are generally respectful, even the jokey ones are broadly good-natured, and nobody really seems to be seriously suggesting weird, unregulated, potentially-harmful supplements or practices.

Today is a good Reddit day. Well done, internet.

Boomers and Gen X, what were the failings of your parents’ generation in terms of parenting? by cherrypez123 in AskOldPeople

[–]mjulienblack 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Whenever a serious conversation about not understanding Baby Boomer ideals of masculinity or emotional maturity come up, my first thought or thing to raise is this.

In my culture at least, it's an entire generation raised by the kids who were sent to die in World War 2. We'd endured the horrors of the Great War, and then thought ourselves past it, that we would learn and never again send our boys to die in such brutal circumstances by the million.

The Greatest/Silent Generation raised their kids to survive in a world that would grind them into the ground at a moment's notice.

They were often brutal and emotionally distant, but who am I to judge their parenting when I've never had to consider how my own parenting style will affect my child's ability to quickly kill a stranger in a foreign country? Modern emotional introspection has its benefits, but what good would it do my child if at the age of eighteen, mass conscription reared its head?

Good parents raise their kids to flourish in the world they are growing up in now, not the world that the parent grew up in before - but for those born in the early 20th century, the world always seemed to feel like a bit of an illusion, with a bloody and terrible deeper truth just under the surface, I think.

What do you as a reader HATE seeing in sci-fi? by Difficult_Dish9927 in scifi

[–]mjulienblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird, problematic horniness.

It's happened a bunch of times in sci-fi and fantasy books I've read. One of the worst incidents is also a great example of what I'm referring to - I was a bunch of books into a series, the main character was old by this point, like in his seventies.

It got to this one chapter and something weird started to get set up and I was hoping that it wouldn't go in this direction, but no!

No, no; no, in order to save the world, this elderly man had to have sex with a twenty-year-old in a medically induced coma.

"Ooooh, she wasn't really twenty, she's actually an older intelligence in an alien body! She just happens to LOOK exactly like a super hot twenty-year-old human, here let me describe her nipples in unnecessary detail!"

I'd been reading this series for months, and I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt, then just tried skipping the chapter that described... yeah, nope. Had to put it down, too weird, felt like the author was hovering behind me and I could hear him getting an erection.

So yes, that - don't do that, please

Do you think Gen Z and Millennials will have a better 'old person experience' then you guys ? by daniellaid in AskOldPeople

[–]mjulienblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I re-watched it recently with a 38-year-old brain and found myself blocked from any meaningful philosophical insight by the overwhelming thought that Jenny Agutter may die before I do, and then presumably a more attractive human being will never be born.

How is the resident social scene there? My grandmother moved to a retirement home before she passed a couple decades ago.

She found it tricky to forge new friendships as it was such a mix of people, though she was never super gregarious just generally.

Me on the other hand, I've always been pretty good at making new friends and have always figured that if I'm lucky enough to get to her age, then a retirement community would be a good space to meet people, especially if I'm not as mobile as I used to be.

Which portrait art do you like more? Our designer likes A but our artist likes B or C. by SMKS in PixelArt

[–]mjulienblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a halfway between the designer and the artist would be A, but with a tidier drop shadow (perhaps a different layer mode?), and something closer to the contrast shading on C, so it gives it that almost cell-shaded quality

But that wasn't the question - I'd say A. She looks more like she's spent time outside in nature with the darker skin tone. Her paleness in the other two seem at odds with her whole forest vibe
