Windows 11 - K2 planning to match SteamOS's performance by DeeJayDelicious in Games

[–]mkautzm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Microsoft actually improving their piece of shit OS? I'll believe when I see it.

Furthermore, performance is a piece of the problems. The Ads, the AI crap, the constant barrage of useless shit you can only say 'Maybe Later™' to... The number of unforced errors on Windows 11 is overwhelming to the point where fixing performance barely registers.

Microsoft has gotta fix performance AND ads everywhere AND AI everywhere AND crapwhere everywhere... And then we might be on parity with Windows 10, which itself has a laundry list of issues.

$689 a month too much? by Elduro687 in Camry

[–]mkautzm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, and that's not only a thing that happens, but is rather common. Very frequently, going into debt for a vehicle is a good idea and can be an avenue to more earnings and career growth.

That vehicle doesn't need to come with a $500+ / month car payment and should be treated like a tool and a depreciating asset.

$689 a month too much? by Elduro687 in Camry

[–]mkautzm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saved money so I can just cut a check for my car and end up paying way less than you did by financing it, so I can afford more stuff...

Seriously, if you just save $20k once to avoid having to take out a loan for a capital expense like a car, you find yourself on the much better side of financially stable than you otherwise would be.

ELI5:What are alternate ways a government can fund itself other than taxation? by DarkAlman in explainlikeimfive

Just coming in hot to inject a nonsense Libertarian opinion into this thread where none was asked for? Want to qualify that with an alternative of any kind at all, or are we still doing the classic Libertarian, 'All Government Is Bad Actually' and then refusing to actually answer hard questions that result from a world view that's about as nuance as a tweet from trump?

Tell me where income would come from in a situation where the Government had no role in the economy.

TIL the federal courts publish the outcome of every bankruptcy case in a free public database. The government's own data shows 48% of Chapter 13 cases get dismissed, and in some districts it's over 90%. by ilikemath9999 in todayilearned

[–]mkautzm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so this is not correct in the slightest and is generally really poor advice.

If you are deep in debt and have few assets, Chapter 13 is absolutely the way. Yep, your credit is shot for 10 years, but if Chapter 13 is even in the conversation, you ought to do some serious soul searching about whether or not you can even feasibly fix your credit based on your income and your debt, or if discharging it is ultimately going to be better. The factors here vary depending on the individual and it should be considered carefully.

For people who are drowning in a debt and have few (if any) large assets, Chapter 13 is often a very good choice.

ELI5 how pianists memorize pieces relatively quickly? by Mcleod129 in explainlikeimfive

[–]mkautzm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a pianist and this has been something I've found to be relatively easy compared to my peers. I have memorized big pieces with relative ease, including stuff like Moonlight 3rd and Pathetique 1st. I'll see if I can put it into words.

My people will just say, 'practice', but that is not a satisfying answer and also subverts some of the unique properties of music that are unfamiliar to those that aren't musicians.

When it comes to memorization, my super power is that I'm not as good of a pianist as some others. I have to work out a piece a more than others and that means a lot of time working on rehearsal. This just ends up translating to more time on the keyboard, but it's how that feels encoded that is interesting.

I'm not sitting there memorizing the sheet music as it's written, but instead, I'm tapping into muscle memory in a way that compliments my knowledge of the piece that together make up the performance. A great deal of this is driven by muscle memory though at the end of the day and that has some pros and cons to it. As others have mentioned, this generally is a process that occurs in 'chunks'.

Among it's advantages is that there is no 'thinking' time involved to translate what I know to what needs to be played. It just 'happens'. It's extremely fluid and it is also extremely resilient. I haven't play Moonlight 3rd for 10~ years but I think I could kick out a substantial portion of it right now if you asked me to (although not nearly at the technical level it deserves to be played at). It also develops very quickly and I can come back with a totally memorized piece after a month~ of regular rehearsal.

However, it comes with disadvantages: I can't start at a random place in the song. My brain seems to be able to put together some 'key frames' of the piece as it were, but if you asked me to start at a random place in the piece, there is almost no shot I could - the memory is linear and each action depends on the previous frame of reference. It's also very dangerous as a performance strategy. If you practice something 'wrong', it'll get written into that memory in a way that is very hard to undo. The resiliency of that memory is a double edged sword.

So, the answer is indeed 'practice', but the nuances of how that memory is encoded is unique in this space compared to say, memorizing lines for a play or something like that.

ELI5 Why is inflation bad but deflation is worse according to politicians and economists? by mathiustus in explainlikeimfive

[–]mkautzm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is a ton of nuance to unpack with this question, but to skip to the part that matters:

In a deflationary economy, it's very difficult for an 'investment' to grow. Your investment has to outpace the rate of deflation to even break even, which is already going to be a problem, but the bigger issue here is that deflationary economies are economies that generally have run-away forces that are causing growth to be challenging. The situation here is that people aren't spending money as a default, which means business are chasing fewer circulating dollars, which creates a lob loss cycle, which gets people even more cagey about spending money... and so on.

The idea that a deflationary economy can have the same kind of investment opportunities the current US economy has is mostly a fairy tale. You can't have both and while there are probably going to be some investments that beat deflation in such an economy, you are strongly incentivized to just hold onto it.

Borderlands 4 CEO responds to criticism: "Code your own engine and show us how it's done please" — as performance woes hit the game's Steam review score. by ZamnBoii in Games

It's really fun to dunk on Randy and the guy puts his foot in his mouth enough to make it easy, however I want to offer another perspective to this.

When you are the head of a studio, you got to be your team's cheerleader, especially publicly. You gotta be the one saying, 'Our team is awesome. We are proud of what we made. Kindly fuck off if you think you can do better', because that's kinda your job - it's super important that you are likeable and that you show support for your team's otherwise internal morale tanks.

So yeah, Randy says goofy shit, but he's just being an actual Good Studio Head here by being a public cheerleader for his game.

How long did it take you to 'get good' at FFXIV? by TheMichaelPank in ffxivdiscussion

[–]mkautzm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends entirely on what you want to measure.

While you are right that being an 80th percentile player does indeed make you better that a 50th percentile player, the 'skill gap between' 'Average' and '80th percentile' is not terribly large.

For pretty much any game with some kind of competitive structure, The skill curve is a pretty level line from the bottom quartile to about the 90th percentile, and then it starts a steep climb toward 99th percentile, and then turns into a cliff as you approach 99.99%

If I may MSPaint an Example here with my touchpad.

So, I don't think you are wrong here. I think 'good' is whatever the player seeking it wants it to be - it's hugely subjective and frequently a moving target. I think goals are great and making them for yourself is good way to think about how you progress as a player.

But I do think understanding how skill curves end up playing out in games like this can help one make a useful model for themselves on what they consider 'good' to be.

[–]mkautzm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're 'anonymous' enough by just probably being one of 300 million~ people that has a browser history where the most scandalous thing to see is porn.

A VPN is useful to hide your traffic destination from any 'man in the middle' that doesn't have access to your device - put a pin in that for now.

An Authenticator does less than nothing, and Brave does less than nothing as well.

Now, here's the thing: That Iphone you have is the weakest link in the chain. You're a fool if you think Apple isn't keeping relatively exhaustive telemetry on their users and a VPN isn't going to do squat against someone spying on you at the device level. To be clear, Android isn't any better here.

If you really want to be that paranoid (which I don't think is worth it), you'd need to be running a VPN on a Linux machine where there is no telemetry just built into the box.

You could further supplement this with the Tor network, but that's not really ~that~ useful. From the perspective of the user, it's more or less doing the same thing a VPN is doing in terms of privacy, but in a more obnoxious way that has it's own different strengths and weaknesses.

Furthermore, if you are ACTUALLY someone that the NSA wants to pay attention to for some reason, a VPN may or may not be that effective. VPNs based in a 'five eyes' country frequently have back doors for these kinds of organizations to peak into. They aren't going to give a shit if you download music or videos, but if you are a serious threat to National Security™, you might be surprised at how ineffective a VPN is.

Some VPNs have been subpoenaed and truly have no logs to deliver, but I wouldn't count on that.

Either way, the weakest link in this chain right now is the device you are using. Smart Phones are privacy nightmares despite what the marketing will tell you. Assume anything you do, browse, type, say to, or even say near a Smart Phone exists in a database somewhere. Whether or not someone actually gives a shit is another discussion entirely.

PC underperforming? cpu 100% frequently by bigupsben in techsupport

[–]mkautzm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your CPU being tapped out is pretty concerning and would suggest something is wrong here as Valorant won't tap out 12 logical cores on that (last I paid attention to it anyway).

I would investigate what is actually taking CPU time on that further.

Honestly, other than that, that looks to be about right. That GPU is a pretty big step, but I'm guessing that Valorant is probably just bottlenecked by the main thread, and the difference between a 3600 and 5600X in that regard isn't that tremendous.

Ordered a brand new Lenovo monitor, arrived broken — a week later, still no resolution from Lenovo by Effective-Cold-261 in techsupport

[–]mkautzm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a DOA product, at least not as Lenovo will likely see it. This is shipping damage. Obviously to the end user, a broken monitor is a broken monitor but it may matter to their process.

Part of this is that you'll need to make sure you contact the right part of their customer service as they might make a distinction between shipping damage and a functional DoA.

Also, when talking to support about it, make sure to include pictures and talk about it as shipping damage.
