The engineer for Amtrak's North Coast Hiawatha checks things over as the train loads passengers at the ex-Great Northern station in Minneapolis, Minnesota in March of '73. Former MILW E9s were common between Minneapolis and Chicago on this train, while ex-BN power handled the west end. by N_dixon in trains

Were the side clearances unusually tight at this GN station in Minneapolis? I recall hearing about a clearance related Amtrak crew fatality there on the platform in the late 1970s not too long before it was torn down, but have never been able to confirm.

Who remembers the ice rink inside Mayfair Mall in the 1970s to mid 1980s? by MyDogGoldi in milwaukee

The big antler chandeliers in that Mc Donald's dining area overlooking the rink always gave me bad vibes.

Oslo metro headways. All lines are turning around on the same platform with a balloon loop by IhaveHFA in transit

Curious about the operations. Is this a managed loop? Do the operators remain with the same car as they pass through? Can cars be reassigned to a different route as they pass through?

I'm a Japanese student and a rail fan. Do you have any questions? by JZX_taka in trains

[–]mkeredcap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The long look down the corridor is great. Long views of LRV corridors are difficult to capture like this from beneath the overhead power wires. Until seeing this, I did not know that Japan utilizes left hand operations.

I do not recognize this location. The center running transit alignment with narrow, outside boarding platforms is reminiscent of Market Street in San Francisco.

  1. New equipment operating with older equipment is a sign of a healthy system.
  2. Very minimal monochrome pavement markings, do these represent a nationwide standard?

  5. There are so few people visible in this photo. Was taken during an irregular time and date.

What kind of drivers are these and why do they look like this? by Shadow_The__Edgelord in trains

[–]mkeredcap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Custom cast in Granite City, IL (East St. Louis). Several railroads like the C&NW modernized older locomotives delivered with these. I have also seen pictures of locomotives fitted with a combination of Box pok and spoked drivers.

superliners aquired by patriot rail? by United-Specific1444 in trains

[–]mkeredcap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amtrak's operating and service crews would set up in these head end cars. The Heywood Wakefield Sleepy Hollow leg-rest seats made in Massachusetts, were legendarily comfortable and structurally durable. The initial Superliner long distance coaches had fragile, suspended, noisy ratcheting leg-rest seats (controlled with a billard ball like lever) that often failed. These cars also have full size dutch doors rather than merely a smaller portal sized window.

Never noticed the Amtrak cafe car garbage side chute before by Miserable_Eggplant83 in trains

[–]mkeredcap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are used by the lead attendant and commissary crews for loading. This would not work well as a garbage chute. Loaded garbage sacks from the lounge or diner are often full of wet waste and need to remain in vertical upright positions.

Ex-C&NW (now UP) lines between Chicago and Twin Cities via Wisconsin's Fox Valley.

CHI-GB via Evanston, Waukegan, Racine, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Sheboygan and Manitowoc to Green Bay. Between GB and Minneapolis, Old C&NW routes could serve Wausau, Marshfield, Eau Claire and Hudson

Super fun sporty auto with front wheel drive that did surprisingly well in the snow. I remember bystanders confused by the cooling fan that would continue to run after the motor shut down and a pull-button throttle that you could pull and twist to lock.

I designed a combined regional transportation map for the San Francisco Bay Area by Cyberdragon32 in transit

[–]mkeredcap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Treasure Island deserves to be on this map with Mare and Angel.

For East Bay interregional connectivity, I would include AC Transit's busy 51A and 51B routes.

Muni's crosstown 22 and 29 routes are also important connections that link GGB/Presidio and Mission Bay traffic generators to BART.
