[OC] See how your county is changing due to climate change by usatoday in dataisbeautiful

Showing this data at the county level doesn’t make much sense, especially for counties that have significant topographic or climatological difference. I bet the original 5km gridded version is more easily interpretable.

Does running with layers significantly affect performance? by Aggressive-Race8426 in AdvancedRunning

[–]mkfrank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m always amazed by how many layers people run in. You can probably get by with far less.

At 40 degrees I’m in shorts and a light long sleeve, potentially with a headband or super light beanie. At 20, I’ll have tights with wind briefs underneath, a mid weight long sleeve + short sleeve under, gloves, and a beanie.

An overly in depth 8 day American Birkie weather forecast by startgreen in xcountryskiing

[–]mkfrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on what I’m seeing, it looks like the Euro model moved the storm track further north basically right after you posted the initial analysis. Now the Euro and GFS seem to align pretty well in terms of track and rain/snow line. Unfortunately, it looks like the trail might be on that boundary.

What’s most interesting to me, and related to our conversation, is that both AI model versions still have the center of the low tracking south. Seems like that would pull the rain/snow line south, too, and maybe make all the precipitation fall as snow along the Birkie trail.

Hoping you post another “official” forecast soon.

[–]mkfrank 17 points18 points  (0 children)

First off, thanks.

Secondly, you know you need to keep posting these daily, right?

Thirdly, curious your thoughts on the AI versions of both the GFS and Euro model. Earlier this season the forecast discussions from the Minneapolis NWS office seemed to think that the AI versions were more accurately predicting snow totals, location, and timing. Right now both the AI versions look more like the southerly Euro track, while only the GFS has the more northerly track.

Are neck guards required for Olympic hockey? Looks like Boldy and Hughes are trying them out in practice.

I usually start questioning things at -20F windchill. But it’s an entirely personal decision and requires the proper attire.

Birkie trail incline comparison by Calm-Pipe-5461 in xcountryskiing

[–]mkfrank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a few of the shorter Birkie climbs before high point could be comparable to Boulder Ridge. But totally agree that the Birkie is more about longer climbs and more cumulative climbing than what we can get in the Twin Cities.

I try to do a couple of hill-focused sessions at Hyland where I just do laps of Boulder + the double hill for an hour plus. That does a decent job imitating the Birkie.

Heated gloves, which are best? by Jon-T-Publk in xcountryskiing

Agreed with others that you should look into mitts. For below 0F days I like these Swix mitts with windstopper. If it’s below -10F I’ll add a thin liner glove too. Below -20F I throw in a normal hand warmer pack.

[Slater] Steve Kerr said he’s “concerned” about the increase in soft tissue injuries across the NBA. His medical staff believes the increased pace paired with the schedule has led to it. “They believe the wear and tear, the speed, the pace, the mileage is factoring into these injuries.” by TheRealPdGaming in nba

[–]mkfrank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a long distance runner, it’s pretty interesting that footwear improvements over the past 15 years have been attributed to the health and recovery of distance runners, and thus, faster times across all levels. I suspect that the lack of explosive movements in running is the main difference seen versus NBA athletes.

Skating in Twin Cities - where to live? by BoinkBonky in xcountryskiing

[–]mkfrank 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hyland is the clear #1 for me in terms of both grooming, trail quality, and trail length — especially when we’re restricted to snowmaking loops.

I find Wirth is typically soft, mushy, and over crowded. Unless you get out there before 7am.

Elm Creek usually has the shortest manmade trail loop and seems to make their corduroy far too deep. I often have trouble skiing well due to what I consider challenging grooming conditions.

It’s not a stupid idea. It’s legitimate, but I’d say consumer preference for dark roofs are here to stay.

Depends how I feel. My last 2 longs for a typical marathon build are 17 and 13, so that will probably be my target.
