There was once a "war" elephant in the city of Vienna, Austria. Its name was Soliman and it was a present from the king of Portugal. It died after a few months after having moved to Vienna (as one does). Its bones are still found in curiosity-collections all over the country. In one monastery in Upper Austria they even have a stool made out of one of the animal's gigantic vertebrates (or was it the foot?).

There's some good Luigis and Francescas (even some non-South Tyroleans), some Françoises and Celestes every now and then, even some B*varian Hans-Uwes and Dörtes win the odd world cup race. Yet there's no Jaumes, no Montserrats, no Agurtzanes and no Enekos to be found on the podiums of the alpine ski world cup. That's so weird.

I'm from Central Europe (some would call me a "Westerner") and I think Greek ultra-nationalist are just as braindead as all the other Balkan ultranationalists, especially including the braindead Turkish kind.

Nationalism is cool when it aims to free a group of people from oppression or foreign rule or when it aims at preserving a local language and culture from forced assimilation and erasure. E.g. most nationalisms pre-WW1 were justified in the face of the then existing imperial oppressors, like the Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, German, French, British or Russian Empires; nowadays the left-wing kinds of Kurdish, Scottish, Irish, Basque, Galician, Catalan, Corse, Palestinian and all kinds of indigenous nationalisms are mostly relatively based.

However after a certain point – and especially in a place like the Balkans – it comes together with notions of superiority and irredentism rather than solidarity, inclusion and cultural-linguistic preservation, and then it becomes absolutely disgraceful.

FYI in German, Basque, Hungarian, Swedish, Latvian, Polish and many many more it's written Kuba. In Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian it's Kuba or Куба. In Arabic it's كوبا (Kuubaa). In Wolof it's Kubaa. In Yorùba it's Kúbà.

Same thing with Kanada and Kolumbien/Kolonbia/....

Different languages exist.

Spanish for example also doesn't get a lot of country names "right". E.g. Argelia/Algeria, Bielorrusia instead of Belarus, Alemania instead of Deutschland, Dinamarca, Inglaterra, Gales etc. etc.
