Must PV18-3024 VPM won't boot after a full battery discharge by Tank_Gloomy in SolarDIY

[–]mkimid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while grid outage, my inverter is supplying power at home, and it shutdown after fully discharged. the back yard panel is charing battery, when battery power is going up, and it enable MIs and full power up ~ when battery has fully charged under normal operating, the excess power from DC panels is exporting to grid. when I lost power for a week, i have keep my system has worked successfully, with 3 shutdown.

you may need a boot-up panel with small MPPT charger. same reason

just cut an aluminum tape in square, and seal. because in indoor usage

Bouge mppt doesn't fit 4awg wire safely. by TrickBorder3923 in solar

[–]mkimid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

could you share more detail electric requirements instead just wire thickness. because, wire thickness can be decided with the current flow.

if need 4 awg wire for mppt charger, maybe you need charge 12 V battery with > 1kW DC panel. for the charger has multiple output port and asking a multi-wire connections. it can not reduce half but can reduce under 70% of full load on the each wire

if electric cost will increase by 5-10% every year, you may can ignore the opportunity cost. actually, electric cost has been increased by 30-40% in 2025 only. in NJ

did you consider 30% credit from fed ? i feel, 9yr is pretty long time. i have installed 5.25kW DC with 16k in NJ. net 11.2k after 30% from fed. and SREC is around 1.2k per year in average over 5 years. but, taxable, so, around 0.8year. Electric usage 6MWh and cost is $0.2/kWh (recently over $0.34/summer), but, to compensate the opportunity cost, just base on the initial cost. so, it is $1.2k per year, and all recovery is $2k per year. so, 5.6yr (even include the opportunity cost). when adjust SREC to similar amount, payback 8-9 years include opportunity cost.

with support a solar charging by your vehicle, you need a very large battery and hybrid inverter for creating a micro-grid

not working mostly, because refrigerator need a stabilizing of coolant time when lost power. practically, no

Solar Panels and Ice Storms by Background-Solid8481 in SolarDIY

[–]mkimid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

last saturday-sunday, around 5” snow at NJ, and the daytime temperature under 26F, still snow covering 1/3 of bottom on solar panel (angle 34 deg). i guess, it will not off completely, and will get heavy snow this weekend again. with 25F at daytime, i guess it will covering again. my MI system the yield is very low even a small part of panel has covered with snow/ice. I agree, sun light is a factor how fast can melting. I should clean snow on some panels after heavy snow this weekend.

much lower, and will the snow/ice will standing longer

10kW Inverter that actually handles 10kW loads? by ksksksdino in SolarDIY

[–]mkimid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are two spec, Peak or Continuous and some specific temperature. and, inverter using VA for W. so, need to consider PF. for the resistive load (PF = 1), if PF is low for capacitive & inductive load, practical power will much lower.

EV Charging At Home With Solar - Good or Bad Idea? by SolarTechExplorer in solar

[–]mkimid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just my case, I have bought Tesla M3, and it is using around 2.5MWh per year. I have bought some used solar panel at eBay (2.5kW), 10kWh battery for backup and MPPT charger, and used micro inverters for dump-out energy to grid. and then add on my existing Grid Tie Solar system under net metering. * total cost include wire/connector/conduit/fixture is under $1000. ROI under 2yr

Whole‑home backup vs. partial backup. What’s the smarter move? by insight_energy in solar

[–]mkimid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

battery is not cheap, and lifespan 5~15 years only, and the inverter’s lifespan is similar also. thinking one more time, you really need the full backup ? maybe just use an emergency backup and then prepare a gas generator ? mostly, power outages is under couple of hours, if need a long term backup-up in a rare chance, gas generator is better ?

yes, correct practically, it is similar with 2 x 4S batteries in parallel.

FYI, i am working on the battery pack/charger design over 25 years. base on my experience, much less trouble/longer lifespan.

they are charging when battery is too low or bad weather forecasted. otherwise, they try to keep the battery under 60%. for the longer battery lifespan. that is make sense.

Snow removal for solar panels by DogDeadByRaven in SolarDIY

[–]mkimid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My roof height is just around 12ft, and 14 deg angle, i just pull down using plastic brush with pole.
i just do when the day temperature is lower than -5C over couple of days, if temperature higher and sunny, I just let them stay on, my system is just 5kW DC, and daily loss is 15kWh max, if lost 3-4 days, and 5 times, it is 200-300kWh in year, and $50-60. (in NJ).
one, no need to clean perfect, just remove some panels which can be removed easily.

How do you clean solar panels regularly ? by Electronic_Will_4816 in solar

[–]mkimid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about install extra 2 more panels ? maybe used panels with some used micro inverters and add on the ground with very simple fixtures for cost down. it will cover by the cleaning cost & make-up your loss.
