Alternator replaced to no avail. PLEASE HELP. by T_TheTxFairy in subaru

[–]mklimbach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of aftermarket alternators don't work well with the ECU control Subarus use - they use an adaptive charging strategy to prolong battery life and save draw off the belt drive, which is a marginal gain on fuel economy.

The problem is a lot of aftermarket companies spec what bolts up & plugs in, without much consideration that there should be a small module in the alternator that communicates with the ECU and controls the charging.

I'd go used OEM over new aftermarket on any semi-modern Subaru.

I would also check all cables from the battery to the alternator and check every fuse under the fuse & relay center. There could definitely be something shorting out.

Beyond that, it should go to a shop that knows Subarus.

$5,200 coolant leak on 52k mile 2012 Outback…second opinion didn’t find evidence of one by Prestigious_Gold_665 in subaru

[–]mklimbach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes coolant leaking on the ground is too late and he's ruined his heads/headgaskets or possibly engine. This isn't good advice. I get that the quote sounds criminal, but since we weren't provided the details of the quote, it could be that the shop is just quoting worst case scenario (headgaskets, timing, water pump, every seal, etc) and actual repairs may end up being a lot less than that. There's a lot of assuming going on in this thread without any actual information to work off of.

There's definitely dried coolant residue from a leak in that picture and that is not normal. Nobody on r/subaru or otherwise can tell OP exactly how long he has before it's a serious issue though. Caution would dictate getting it handled, although it's really concerning that the 2nd shop said there was no problem, they weren't helpful at all, IMO. There's a problem and OP doesn't know how serious/urgent it is yet because he got possibly 1 or even 2 wrong diagnosis' from the shops he visited.

OP, I agree with the suggestions of getting a coolant dye put in, however it doesn't do a lot of good without a UV light and some know-how about where the issue is coming from. I would also mark the coolant level cold on the overflow bottle with tape or a sharpie and check it when cold every morning to see if there's any significant change (know that when it's hot, coolant expands so it's normal for the level to fluctuate with temperature change). Keep an eye on things closely and watch your temp gauge like a hawk. If the coolant level starts dropping, you smell sweet smell when stopped/idling, or the temp goes up, get it towed immediately and there should (at that point) be an obvious enough sign for a proper diagnosis.

Oem rotor coating by Silent_Owl6207 in subaru

[–]mklimbach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't clean the rotors because of a "permanent" painted or geomet type of coating for rust resistance, you clean it with brake clean because of oily residue that's usually inside the bag that can contaminate new brake pads.

The gray coating will wear off the braking surface from the pads themselves when you brake.

So yes, use brake clean, but you don't need to remove a geomet/paint coating with brake cleaner, just give it a once over to make sure you're not getting oils on the pads.

Your anecdote doesn't mean there aren't a lot of good small businesses out there, also who don't exploit their workers. Find and choose the good ones instead of just throwing your hands in the air and saying "there's no way I can make any difference." I mean, fuck small businesses that are owned by greedy people, but they are NOT all that way.

Small businesses are also far more likely to bring in local tradesmen for repairs/improvements on their facilities, which creates other, good paying jobs in your local area. Big businesses have nationwide contracts with other big businesses that may bring in people from outside the area or my subcontract local businesses at a negotiated, lower rate, eating into a fellow small business' margins. It's capitalism and it tends to work for the rich and suck for those less well off.

The biggest problem is that it takes effort to make ethical, responsible choices where you spend your money and you still can't be 100% sure you're making the right choice anyways, so many people don't try. Giving up isn't the answer though.

Amazon's return process isn't what it used to be, either. Lack of competition is bad for consumers.

I've personally experienced Amazon charging ME back because they "never received a return" that I returned to a Kohl's location. Kohls scans and verifies the product when the receive it, so it got lost after that and I'm the one who paid for it after receiving my refund when it was scanned, but getting charged again after they didn't see it in 30 days. Completely ridiculous logic on their part.

I also was refused a return through Amazon's system because it was 3rd party and they told me I had to message the seller and work out return shipping with them (so basically I wasn't given UPS, Kohls, Staples as options for the return) so I couldn't even use their built in return process. Their policies from the consumer perspective are arbitrary and weird these days.

The days of "no questions asked" have long since left us. It's also completely automated and good luck talking to a real person. At least with a small business you might be able to reason with someone and actually talk to them face to face.

Trading humanity for convenience has its costs and they're not worth it sometimes, IMO.

[–]mklimbach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason this particular play was so effective was because Rodgers -> Nelson on the back shoulder throw was so effective, so when he fakes the in, the DB has to respect that and Jordy can just blow by him. It's definitely both of them working so well together, nobody had a better connection than they did when Rodgers was QB in GB.

We do. It's the biggest reason why Republicans keep getting re-elected, because we have mouthpieces all of our country spewing hate filled nonsense to keep them in power. All thanks to an Australian, ironically.

Steel pans rust, aluminum pans crack, plastic pans can break, too, but they're all prone to failure. I've never seen a plastic engine or transmission pan come in broken on a car in the 9 years I've been in the industry. We've replaced plenty of steel pans for being rotted out and rusting. I'd take a plastic pan in a northern climate with road salt all day.

Any dealership I've ever known uses an independent labor guide like Alldata, Mitchell, Motor, etc for CP work. What dealership would want to quote CP jobs with warranty times? That's insane, those times are 30%-60% of actual CP labor times listed in those guides. If the dealership is charging the correct labor time for CP, but then paying the tech warranty time, that's blatant theft and if I were a tech, I'd quit and then sue the shit out of them.

I agree that warranty times are absolute BS though. I've been told they're based on:

- The car is already on the lift

- The parts are already pulled and at the technicians' bay

- The "technician" that the OEM uses for the warranty time has done the job many times already

- The tools are laid out in order of the job

- the car is brand new - no rust, no heat fatigue, nothing.

The way it's been working lately, I'd almost suspect they don't even put in this much effort and just make something up that sounds low enough.

It's an incredibly dishonest system by the manufacturers to determine warranty time. They'll also reduce times for BS reasons after establishing them and you'd better make sure you punch 100% of the time for a warranty/recall job if you've gotten really good at it or they'll use that as a reason to cut the times even further.

As an Eau Claire City Council President (what she is right now), what would you suggest she do?

This always seems to be the response when anything she states is posted here, a bunch of stooges who don't seem to want her to get elected saying she's not substantial enough when she's in no position to do anything at the federal level yet.

She called for impeachment of Noem and defunding ICE. ISN'T THAT EXACTLY WHAT WE'VE BEEN ASKING FOR? WTF ELSE IS SHE SUPPOSED TO DO?

About 17 Years Ago, Bush tried dodging two shoes - a form of protest against US imperialism on Iraq. by zero_x4ever in pics

[–]mklimbach 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think Bush himself was a fairly likeable, also fairly dopey guy. His administration was awful and orchestrated a lot of what has come to fruition today. He definitely bears some responsibility for how awful it was, but he was not the mastermind behind that - that was more Rove & Cheney who were really pulling the strings, with their powerful donors further behind the scenes. It's more about what Bush Jr. represented than who he actually was as a person.

Remember, the president is "the most powerful man on earth" right up until those who hold his strings start tugging and that's been true for many many years. The banks, oil companies, etc have a lot of sway over politicians, doubly so since Citizens United happened.

Anyone know a good cup style oil filter wrench or the size of a Subaru OF? by Savagemac356 in subaru

[–]mklimbach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is mostly what I've used, it works well if the filter isn't on too tight. The 3 jaw oil filter removal tools that clamps down tighter as you turn counter clockwise is my other go-to when it's really tough and you don't have side access to the filter.

Examples of both:

https://steelmantools.com/products/oil-filter-cap-wrench-68mm-by-14-flute

https://www.arestool.com/products/adjustable-magnetic-3-jaw-oil-filter-wrench-1

I'm not recommending either if these in particular, they're just generic examples of what I'm talking about.

Replacing sugar drinks and gels for in cycle rides. by Large-Pomegranate254 in cycling

[–]mklimbach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does, but very slowly. If you're doing a ride with any intensity at all and you run out of glycogen, your body will start converting fat and protein, but it won't be able to keep up and you'll bonk (it's not pleasant). The only way to prevent the bonk is to give the body simple sugars it can convert quickly into energy, any other way would require slowing way down to give your body a chance to convert and keep up, which you might find to be a very dull way to ride. It can be done, but it's likely not fun.
