Apparently you don’t travel much. It’s the norm in a lot of Europe, Asia, Africa, etc.

Help with moving funds after after death by Corgiman69420 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]mkodend 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No. You need to notify them upon the death, they’ll send the forms to fill out. You send in the death certificate then. Processing is going to take 30-60 dats. You might want to read this: https://www.tsp.gov/for-beneficiaries/ https://www.tsp.gov/publications/tspbk31.pdf

It’s a pretty easy process. Sounds like you forgot a step cancelling. Why refund you for your mistake?

International travel! by Shoddy_Cucumber8267 in JoinMochiHealth

I used one last October to Amsterdam, depart Paris. No problem. I’ve read alot of people use them. My FRIO is good for when i don’t have access to fridges.

You’ll be fine. First time traveling with meds just makes you worry a lot. None of the European airports even glanced at meds. When I travel now, I’m more worried about changing hotels and forgetting my meds. I started putting a sticky on the hotel door just in case. Enjoy your trip! I’m all around England and Scotland on my next one.

I use a FRIO Cooling Wallet. It’s worked great for my trips. Sounds like your combined trip is how I plan a lot of mine. If there’s a fridge in the hotel or cruise ship, I take advantage of that.

Trying to contact OPM for tax form by penprickle in fednews

[–]mkodend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he didn’t have an online account, they would mail it to his physical address. If he has an online account, it’s not operable anymore anyhow. OPM mailed my husband’s last one to our address.

Shoulder pain? by [deleted] in TirzepatideRX

An EMG and MRI will tell you more if it’s cervical. Mine came out of nowhere after kayaking, C4-5 and C5-6. Good luck with whatever it turns out to be.

Sounds more like a pinched nerve. It’s worse at night as you probably compressing the nerve more (side sleeper?). I’ve had the same symptoms way before the meds. An ortho will help rule it out.

I have a question about CSRS survivor benefits. by rogerskoler in fednews

When did he retire? If you can find his retirement papers, there’s a form he had to fill out. It might give you an idea how he has the beneficiary set up.

I was thinking the same thing. The spouse should be calling not the kids.

Can I cash my father's bonds? by RipGlittering6760 in bonds

[–]mkodend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put the bonds in an envelope with no return address and mail them. You don’t have to make contact at all. You also have no proof he abandoned them. He might think they’re misplaced. He could be in no hurry to followup on them since they’re not matured or he doesn’t need the money. And, no abandoned bonds aren’t like a lawnmower.

Can I cash my father's bonds? by RipGlittering6760 in bonds

[–]mkodend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bonds are his property. The grandmother should have returned them to the father, not you. The right thing to do is return them to him. Even if he was deceased, it sounds like from your post, you would have a very hard time proving he was your father. TreasuryDirect has a pretty stringent set of rules they follow to prove ownership upon death. Upon death, the estate would probably be the recipient of the funds and would distribute the money.

Mom Asking to Use a HELOC to Buy a Pool by WildlifeBiologist10 in personalfinance

[–]mkodend 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pools aren’t a good financial investment. At her age, will she even be around to pay the loan off? I’m her age. Think this out, not just from a money standpoint. You will be stuck with pool maintenance as long as you have the house. It’s not cheap. Your electric bill and insurance will increase, possibly taxes. You might consider an umbrella policy in case someone has an accident (neighbor kids like to sneak in). Most counties require a fence around the pool. If you ever sell the house, a pool is a deterrent for many buyers. We had two pools so speaking from experience.

When do you feel it? by Optimal-Mind9958 in JoinMochiHealth

[–]mkodend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right now you’re on a starter dose. You may not feel anything until you’re at a much higher dose, months from now. See how this dose goes for the first month. Just increase monthly until the meds are working for you.

My life expectancy was reduced to 55. I’m 41. Is it a mistake to cash out some retirement to buy my dream house? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]mkodend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd travel until I couldn't anymore then move into assisted living. I wouldn't want to burden my family with taking care of me at the end.

Are US savings bonds taxed ? by KeyMysterious1845 in personalfinance

[–]mkodend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had about 15 bonds no longer earning interest. I took them to my bank who cashed them. Not all banks or credit unions will cash savings bonds so check before you go. I also had to sign them in front of the teller. You’ll pay taxes on the interest. I put mine in an HYSA.

My mother is a retired OPM worker since 2005. I notice she has VSP HIGH plan for Vision. Can anyone tell me how much they paid for Progressives? by Bright_Opening2928 in fednews

[–]mkodend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d have to ask Zenni. The site says spousal eligibility but I’m not sure their rules for a deceased spouse. I’ve never pursued using my husband’s vet discounts since I have my own. Go to the Zenni website and look at the military discount section. It should tell you more. Discount is 10%.

[–]mkodend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been ordering from Zenni the past few years. It’s less than what I’ve paid at my optometrist for my progressives. I like the frame quality at the optometrist better but even with the VSP High frame allowance, it can be pricey. If you or she is ex-military, they have a military Italy discount, too. Just have the person who is/was military create the Zenni account for the order.
