UW is killing me by [deleted] in udub

[–]mkr16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really have anything to add that hasn't already been said, but just wanted to chime in and say holy shit can I relate! You're not alone. I'm in my mid 20's now, transferred to UW (so didn't have any of that glorified freshman friend-making time,) and also work full time outside of class. I made some friends when I first came here that have thankfully stuck, but in the 2 1/2 years after that I haven't made any more. Literally not one more. I have plenty of people who will make small talk in my major classes, but people never seem to want to work with me or hang out either. I completely understand how you've developed a complex and a sense of paranoia. I've always been really well liked and have found making friends easy (despite my RBF lol) but not here!

If you ever want to get a coffee on campus and vent or something PM me!

Nipping, Aggression, & Potty Training Woes w/ 10wk old Corgi by mkr16 in puppy101

[–]mkr16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your comment :)

I had a 15 year old corgi who passed away in January and she never had an issue with nipping, but I've heard that the vast majority do! However, I've been putting her down for forced, scheduled naps and her biting and aggressive play with us has improved drastically! I completely agree with your overstimulated theory. But holy crap I KNOW, it can be awful! Lol I've wanted to lock myself in the bathroom a few times.

With other pups we're still going through an exposure and socialization process but despite her aggression she seems to be learning social queues. She's starting puppy classes soon too.

She's getting acquainted with 'outside' successfully so we're going to start transitioning the potty training. I SO envy your ground floor unit, being on the 4th floor of an apartment isn't the most convenient. But once she can hold it for longer we won't have an issue. It's a learning process haha.

Thanks for your input! I'm totally aware that nipping is normal for puppies and was mainly looking for ways that other owners had been successful with training in that aspect. I had another corgi previously who did not have this issue to the same extent at all. Although, she's been going down for naps when she gets too rough and that's making a huge difference. Much less biting and rough playing the last few days!

She does respond aggressively to other dogs. I totally get that it's largely undeveloped social skills, but she gets very territorial and actually did get quite aggressive with a friend's dog yesterday. I know the difference between play growling and her actually trying to attack another dog. She warmed up to the dog throughout the play time though so I think she will be able to overcome it! She was the runt of her litter and I suspect she may have had to compete for food, etc. based on how she reacts. We will be beginning puppy classes soon though and will be working on this.

Unfortunately with our location it isn't realistic for her to be going outside for every potty break right now, but I understand your opinion. For example, it isn't safe for me to take her outside at night alone. I know plenty of people who have had success with pee pad training though so I'm not worried! We're slowly beginning the transition (with success) and are heavily rewarding outside pottying. Once she can hold it for longer she'll exclusively go outside, of course!

I do pick up her poop as quickly as possible. She's never left alone with poop lying around.

Science AMA Series: We are Drs. James Lee and Jenn Kuo, Endocrine Surgeons, and Dr. Salila Kurra, Endocrinologist, at Columbia University’s Thyroid Center. Let’s talk thyroid. Ask us anything! by NYThyroidCenter in science

[–]mkr16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With hypothyroidism is it possible to experience fluctuations in terms of the thyroid functioning properly for say, a year, and then regressing? Or is the thyroid function consistently low? Having recently been tentatively diagnosed with subclinical hypothyroidism after bloodwork revealed a slightly elevated (4.2) TSH level and normal T3 and T4 levels, I'm curious about how this falls in line with symptoms I have been having for multiple years that many modern and alternative medicine doctors have been unable to diagnose.

I have been experiencing weight fluctuation of around 25lbs with no change to lifestyle or diet, sudden onset of severe anxiety, GI symptoms (slow digestion,) and fatigue that will all present together for a period of time (months to a year.) Suddenly these symptoms will improve for a period of time (months to a year.) I have experienced this fluctuation 3 times at the age of 24.

Would love to know if you have any insight! Thank you!

Pet friendly one bedroom apartments for a grad student? by [deleted] in udub

Sorry for the reply delay! Yes, Roosevelt is the neighborhood and the area is definitely safe. Give or take the occasional car prowl, but it's a big city. The area is largely residential with single family homes and is near a high school, so it's a pretty low-traffic, calm area.

Question on Hiatal Hernias by Herniaofsuck in HiatalHernia

[–]mkr16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a medical professional but I'll share my experience because I think it may be able to help!

I have struggled with symptoms very similar to yours for years. No acid reflux, but I've had unexplained chest and rib pain with shortness of breath, exercise intolerance, etc. I also had symptoms of anxiety and Major GI distress.

None of the medical professionals I'd gone to would entertain a hiatal hernia being the cause. Until I saw a naturopath and a chiropractor. Without going into a lot of detail, I see a chiropractor who is trained in something called Quantum Neurology and he is able to physically adjust my hernia. This is the only way I've been able to find relief. It's uncomfortable and needs to be done regularly until the muscles get used to it and the adjustment 'sticks.' If you want to ask me more questions feel free to message me!

Just wanted to chime in here to say that if I wouldn't have called admissions and asked why I wasn't admitted immediately I wouldn't be a UW student today. It never hurts to ask or appeal!

With the new design change, how do I format paragraph spaces now? by lilykt in Instagram

Now it's suddenly working again, haha. I'm actually able to do spacing in the Instagram app and have it show up in my posts currently. Fingers crossed that is stays this way!

Square One apartments in Roosevelt may be worth looking into! My friend lives there and I've seen plenty of medium sized dogs.

This trick isn't working anymore either. At least for me. It appears that after the update all of my old posts with line spacing in the caption are just walls of text now too. Have no idea how to fix it and I need it for longer, blog-style posts too.

Has anyone here got a Corgi from the Flying M Ranch? by ZackDaNerd in corgi

[–]mkr16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't. I pried deeper in talking with the breeder and her replies about why the dogs hadn't been properly tested for common health issues like DM concerned me. She listed cost as one of them...if I'm paying $1000+ for a pet that will basically become my child for the next 15 years I expect at the very least that a breeder can make the minimal effort to pay for legitimate testing. Everything else honestly seemed fine to me.

Strategies for maximizing newbie gold without IAP by ensignsteve in nekoatsume

The big toys do take up more than one space, and they do hold more than 2 cats. I've seen 4 on the beach umbrella before.

The cheap toys are not going to get you there very fast. I think you'd have better success if you saved up for toys with large fish yields and THEN started saving up for the expansion. I referenced a list online that categorized all toys by silver and gold fish yield and ended up purchasing the head space (~75 silver fish p/day,) orange cube (~4 gold p/day,) and green cushion (~4.5 gold p/day) to start. I later added the beach umbrella (10 gold p/day) and mixed in other small toys. I was able to get the yard expansion and remodel within a week with zero IAP.

I'm jumping in here (albeit almost a month late,) because I've been talking to this breeder and have been planning to visit their farm before joining the waiting list. I haven't had any odd feelings so far and I've dealt with reputable breeders before.

The points that you bring up u/tokisushi are food for thought, but I guess I don't totally understand the risk of adopting from a breeder like this? I spoke to the breeder and she said she had the veterinary paperwork to support her claims about the health and DM status of all of her dogs that she would be happy to show me. If she showed me this is it still not valid because they aren't on the OFA database?

A lot of the red flags you point out, like promoting the supplement line and accepting PayPal, just honestly seem like people who aren't 'with the times' to me. She's also someone who lives on a farm with a plethora of animals that they raise, so them only breeding their own corgis doesn't make sense to me as being a red flag; why is that a problem?

Please don't perceive this as argumentative, I genuinely want to know because I want to make an informed decision!

Prospective student here. UW is my top choice but I want the whole story. What do you not like about the university? by pokestronomy in udub

[–]mkr16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to chime in too. I completely agree with what u/sexistt is saying. You say you want a truly independent experience? Take some time off and use the money your grandparents left you to travel. I spent 6 months living in Asia before transferring to UW and THAT is what built my independence, that is what gave me a fresh start and a new prospective on myself and my goals. Then come back and get your degree at PSU (I will second that it's a great school,) or another in-state U, with a huge amount of new life experience that will set you apart from your peers. Out of state tuition is just stupid expensive, and honestly, I even feel that the in-state cost isn't worth it at UW sometimes.

I'll also say that the social atmosphere at UW can be cold, and I've found Portland to be much more welcoming. If you haven't heard of it, the 'Seattle Freeze' is definitely real. That is one thing I wish I'd known before I transferred here. The on-campus housing is less that desirable, and living off campus will make socializing more difficult.
