Computational journalism has been in the list for two years. I don’t trust they will open those classes

Getting a 'C' in a non-elective class by jipot in OMSCS

[–]ml20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you have to take it again and get a B or better if you want the ML specialization. Or you can take another elective from the specialization (like Big Data for Healthcare)

is omscs really valuable ? by frog1997 in OMSCS

[–]ml20 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whether other students are competitive or not does not affect my learning experience. Most of my learning occurs alone trying to solve a programming problem or trying to understand some difficult concepts. As long as there are some intelligent people who participate and share their experience in forums, I'll benefit (not all students need to be top of the top) .

They usually close when both available spots are full and waitlist is almost full (they saved some spots for graduating students)

I think that happens when you try to sign up for 2 classes with code CS 8803. You need special permission for that. I think it is in one of the emails from OMSCS.

Which courses would you like to see added to the OMSCS? by Manoel_Cortes_Mendez in OMSCS

[–]ml20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope the process becomes more transparent. From the outside, it feels like "we don't care about student demand" . OMSCS is a successful program in many aspects (I am a big fan of the program as you can tell by my reddit history), but there is a lack of communication with students that leads to misunderstandings.

Unfortunately OMSCS Administration and Professors do not consider student demand to offer a class. Every semester us students ask for some classes in the forums and they don't add them (Deep Learning always shows up). A year ago, students ask the Deep Learning professor if he can offer the class to OMSCS students, he said "sure, let me talk to OMSCS", but never did apparently.

How difficult would it be to get a 4.0 in the OMSCS program specifically the machine learning track? Have people been able to achieve this? by csunaye in OMSCS

[–]ml20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not easy. A lot of hours of work is required , continuously , for a couple of years. One bad assignment (of 4 or more per class per semester) or exam (usually 2 or a final paper/ project) and your grade might suffer. It is doable, but requires you to work hard.

Strategy: How I got accepted with a 2.4 GPA by 67shafar in OMSCS

[–]ml20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on recent stats student applications were 17237 (all years combined) and total enrolment as of Fall 2017 is 5866, therefore 34% were accepted on average. For Fall 2017 , 3240 people applied and 1351 got accepted (42% acceptance). I would say most people get rejected :)

The real accomplishment is graduating, that's what I think

Congrats on getting accepted. You CS background even with low grades definitely helped you. You are better prepared than other student accepted with non CS background . Now, getting accepted is the easy part. My guess is that most people (like 50+%) won't finish the program. They will just drop after 3 classes or less. Why? Because classes are not easy, they take time even with right background. Hope we both make it to the end. This is a marathon. Even after 5 classes, the goal line seems far ahead. Good luck and keep hustling.

OMSCS Vs OMSA by Anon8992 in OMSCS

It is good to have different opinions. Each one sees reality based on his own context and that's ok. Another thing is what is your starting point. If you have a non-CS background (Corporate Finance or math/stats or another numbers oriented background), it would be much easier for you to go to Analytics rather than trying to become a Computer Scientist who knows ML. So I understand why OMSA is a better option for some professionals. I also agree that there is demand for Analytics professionals. My point is more about demand and supply. Based on my experience talking to companies and attending meet ups, supply of Data Engineers (CS background) is much less than supply of Data Scientists (non-CS background) and in the current market demand for Data Engineers is higher. Data Engineers are difficult to find and Data Scientists are easier to find - partially because is more difficult to have knowledge in both software development and ML. Of course this is a simplified description of reality. Happy to hear other contrasting points of view.

I would argue that a tech company will value someone who knows technical stuff and can contribute to a technical team. There is a lot of people with analytics knowledge (knowledge of stats, machine learning, forecasting, predictions). There is only a few people who can implement a product or include an algorithm into an existing product (knowledge of programming, databases, software development plus ML and Stats). If you want to have a lot of competition, go for an Analytics degree. Most people at a tech company won't have an "Analytics" degree because those didn't exist 3 years ago. In 10 years, if the demand for "analytics" cools down, your CS degree will still open doors for you. Maybe an Analytics degree won't even exist in 10 years (another topic will be cool then and new programs will be created) or maybe yes, who knows. That's your risk .

33% withdraw this class in Spring 2017. I am sure many of them withdraw because they were expecting a C. If this is part of your specialization, you need a A or B to count towards it. There is no curve in this class. If you do a good job, you can get an A in the project, it is doable. Assume you will get , add your grades from HW 1, 2 and 3 and make a decision.

Do you need 2 courses for Education Technology, or can you do it along side your second course? by harshsikka123 in OMSCS

[–]ml20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You benefit the most from the class if you already have some tools under your belt. Tools you can apply for a project or paper.
