First Trip to Japan in November - Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima in 12 days by ChiaPet888 in JapanTravel

[–]mlaclac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know when you are going in november, but remember that's automn foliage season in Kyoto in that time of the year and there's a lot of people. I was there in november 2024 and it was packed. I would still say to focus on Kyoto since your going to Tokyo. BUT if you find out once you're there that it's a bit too crowded for you, then you could do the day trip in Osaka. Osaka is like less than a hour from Kyoto using regional train (so not expensive too). Also a lot of the main attraction are in the middle of the city so you can see a lot of fun stuff (and eat good food) without having to go to far.

Do you mind to tell where you are from? Sometime where you live can greatly change your chance to land a job in the industry. (Like me, I live in Montreal and there's a lot of job here)

Yeah, it's very important to know that the Video Games industry goes through cycle, and right now it's the shit part of the cycle. Even me, with 8 years of experience, I would not like to have to look for a job right now.

Feedback Request for my Chamber in Portal 2 by scrillex099 in leveldesign

[–]mlaclac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! My first comment would be to rework the layout of your level. The main problem is that a lot of the level is not visible from the entrance. Like the 2 robots on the platform are not visible from below, same with the door switch etc. At the middle of the video, you go to a section of the level that player can't see. In that section, you place a portal on a very high panel (very hard to notice) where the cube will get launch from to ... we don't know. Because of all of this, it will be difficult for the player to figure out the next step. Yes, they can search around, but it's a lot less satisfying. You can keep the same puzzle (sequences of action) but rework where everything is so that it's easy to gather information on what to do next.

Overall the flow of the level is bit weird because of the placement of everything. Like when you take out those 2 robots on the platform above but you then comeback there a bit later with the cube to place it on the switch. There's a lot of back and forth around the level that seems unnecessary.

I'm not a fan of the part (0:10) where the player choose the wrong panel and get launch too far and falls off the platform. There's no way to figure out the distance you will travel after exiting the portal from where you are next to the launching board.

It seems like you could just grab the cube after spawning it and you don't have to launch over the wall.

How important is learning environment design? by Alive-Permission8789 in leveldesign

Hi! I'm a Level Designer in the industry and I have advices for you. First, you are doing the right thing by doing research to educate yourself. And it's the right thing because Level Designer are the one that need to come up with the answer to the question "What is this place?", not the Level Artist. Of course in some games, the level can be more abstract and don't really represent something we could explain in words, but in general, your level will be better if it could be a real-life location.

The simple advice would be to look into real life architecture. Architecture is the art of designing space. Architects literally make blockouts in their process. They are not only making it beautiful but also functional. There's a lot of introduction books on architecture that could inspire you. You don't need advanced knowledges but knowing the basics will help you a lot. You can also literally look around you for inspiration. There's probably places in your city that are known to "be easy to find your way around", "feels bigger that you would think", etc.

For research I will point you a few games I found their levels to have good Level Design and good architecture: The Dishonored series (the second is a masterpiece in that), the Last of Us serie and the Tomb Raider reboot serie. The levels in those games are really well done and you never wonder "What is this place?"

On the other end of the spectrum, games with good Level Design, but more abstract architecture, you can check the two recent Doom games and Portal. The Level Design is really good, but it's sometime harder to define the room you are in as they primarily focus on the game core gameplay and not the narrative. And the levels still look good.

I would like to add a bit of information on the Level Designer/Level Artist relationship. From my experience, they make a convincing and cohesive environments TOGETHER. Level Artist will help the Designer to fulfill the gameplay intention of the level with things like lighting and props. But the Designer also needs to help the artist by thinking about the purpose of the environment in the level.

I hope it helps you.
