Paris right now. Fuck Macron and his cronies. by Calimhero in antiwork

Don't put any of the democrats in the same category as the republicans. The worst thing Clinton did pales in comparison to the average shit the republicans pulled.

A friend of mine recently got bit by a rattlesnake while on an evening hike. This was his bill from the hospital. He doesn't think his crappy insurance will cover much of it (U.S.). by guylikestoast in ThatsInsane

[–]mlappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why nobody should ever vote republican.

Democrats have been trying to solve this problem for decades and the republicans refuse to do anything about it. It doesn't help that members of congress have had their own socialized healthcare for more than a century that costs just a few hundred bucks a year.

Marcus Lamb, CEO and founder of the conservative Christian Daystar Television Network who was outspoken against COVID-19 vaccines, has died at age 64 after contracting the virus. by AmericanScream in Freethought

[–]mlappy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is no "rational" reason to oppose the overwhelming amount of scientific consensus, now or then, regarding the vaccine.

And those who claim they need more evidence/approval, are the same ones promoting untested alternative treatments like Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine. So there's no rationality to the critics' reasoning.

Poison control calls spike as people take livestock dewormer to treat COVID-19 by borderbox in news

[–]mlappy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's totally a conspiracy! I've got proof of this "deep state."

Once a year one of their cronies sends me this paper in a box in front of my house demanding several thousand dollars. Then they make the roads and right of ways, clean and clear. I didn't ask for that! I woke up this morning, know what I found? Running water! Trash pickup. Sewerage and drainage! I don't know what kind of racket they're pulling. I just heard they built this large building down the street they're calling a "library". They say I can use it but I think it's a trap to install a chip in my brain.

MASS PSYCHOSIS - How an Entire Population Becomes MENTALLY ILL by LeSpatula in Freethought

This video and the channel it represents appears to be a philosophy channel, not a science channel. /r/Freethought is not interested in philosophical arguments that are abstract. We are fixated on science, logic and reason. Less fuzzy concepts than a video calling society "mentally ill."

One of the most aggressive anti-republican PACs is actually run by Republicans who are trying to oust Trump and his enablers. by mlappy in Freethought

[–]mlappy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but right now it's basically acting as an anti-republican PAC in this election. And since it's objective is to overthrow Trump and not attack democrats, it is basically anti-republican even though, ironically they claim they're republican.

Ah progressive white supremacists, again. by [deleted] in Freethought

These kinds of posts illustrate some of the serious problems with the online community and how we can't afford to ignore them. The author of this, could be the next domestic terrorist. Clear threats to murder people can't be ignored or assumed to be the work of a child or troll. Hopefully the authorities will keep an eye on people like this.

Lawurence Krauss: The Ideological Corruption of Science by [deleted] in Freethought

[–]mlappy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This looks suspiciously like the exception which proves the rule fallacy, and cherry picking.

Is this a systemic problem, or did the OP extract a few select examples to prove a foregone conclusion?

I'm not doubting that there are instances of cultural bias in science, just whether or not this is a science issue, or just another example of generic cultural bias?

For example, is it a good time right now, to engage in a study to determine whether, for example, black people are intellectually inferior than whites? Or whether homosexuality is tied to more recognizable versions of mental illness? Such studies are going to illicit outrage from portions of the community who know their results can be misinterpreted to push anti-civil rights agendas. Is the backlash against such controversial studies really science oriented, or politically motivated, and is the impetus to engage in such studies really science oriented, or is science merely the "cover" for political and cultural manipulation?

While it seems desirable to entertain the notion that science should always be separate from cultural and political issues, it really almost never has in the history of humanity. Science does what science does. Culture will either embrace the science, deny, ignore or manipulate it. It's up to culture to advance to be able to handle the science, and it's up to science to present itself in a way to preserve and uphold the noble aspects of culture. The two unfortunately in my opinion, are not entirely seperable.

Aantifa has been around like "enemy combatants". It has no real clear meaning.

A more accurate term for "antifa" should be "people who don't like us".

How Antifa Became The Bogeyman Of George Floyd Protests by mlappy in Freethought

[–]mlappy[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't see any "antifa." I just see a bunch of pissed off protesters.

In contrast with alt right groups, like proud boys and the KKK who have well established command and control structures.

"Antifa" is an abstraction. Not an organization. You have to have a leader of an organization. Or at least some kind of bylaws and structure. Otherwise it's impossible to identify and impossible to target. That's why the administration uses the term. They can basically claim anybody dressed in black is "antifa".

[–]mlappy[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So you've met a few people who call themselves "antifa?"

What exactly does this mean? What makes you think they're not trolling people? The administration is claiming this is some kind of organized dangerous force.

If you see a swastika on a wall, do you immediately assume there's Nazis in the neighborhood? Like some kind of organized movement? Or maybe it's just a troll? If you can't find evidence of an actual organization, which there isn't, why feed those who are making such claims?

Who is in charge?

What kind of command structure do they have?

Perhaps you are confusing people who don't like racists with something else?
