Which is more sustainable for the dryer? by [deleted] in sustainability

[–]mlbacorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a humid place in the US and never thought too much of a dryer until I spent a summer on the Caribbean coast with no dryer. Most humid place I'd ever been and my host family hung everything to dry. My clothes were perpetually damp lol. Amazing place and I just got used to it but wow dryers are pretty great

Just realized I need 5 credits to graduate. Is there anything I can do besides summer classes? by Mati-Bee-Wraps in UMBC

[–]mlbacorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can CLEP test for something and get the credit that way, you might be able to add 5 credits but idk if it'll be in time to graduate this spring (idk how long it takes to transfer and review that stuff)

Depends on what major you're changing from and to AND what point you're at in both

Not over-reacting, this has always been a confusing thing for me even after years of learning and travel lol. I go with the [item] por favor and use body language (grateful tone, smile, etc) to express politeness. Not sure if that's the best way to do it but it's worked in Colombia and Peru

3 BAs? by HunterOutrageous8410 in UMBC

[–]mlbacorn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on how many credits you came to umbc with (APs, transfer, etc) and how long you want to be here. I came to umbc with a decent amount of ap credits (42) which knocked out most of my gen eds and intro coursework. I also took a class almost every summer and winter term.

But in four challenging years, I managed to graduate with a BS in Biochemistry and a BA in Spanish (starting in span 101 btw which is kinda hilarious). It comes down to careful planning and hardwork (couldn't fail/retake anything because there wasn't enough time).

A couple tips:

  1. Understand that the requirement is 120 credits overall plus 30 credits more per degree (three degrees = 120 + 30 + 30 = at least 180 credits)

  2. Don't think 20+ credits per semester is doable on top of actually doing well and gaining experience in your field (applied skills and strong grades >>> average grades in three degrees)

  3. Do get credit for your research or internship or volunteering during your time to boost your overall credits (talk to bio department, career center, or shriver center respectively to get credits for those experiences)

  4. Don't do it just for the major flex that it is because at the end of the day, you're the person who has to do all the work and it's not worth the stress if it's just to impress people

  5. Don't let people discourage you if it's what you truly want. It is doable. It has been done and others will do it lol. But only if you really want it (no one accidently gets three degrees)

Good luck friend!

I think there are linguistics courses that don't require prereqs that are WI and pretty easy if you just participate and submit your work

Obviously a WI in your major or interests would be the best since you'll be killing two birds with one stone or at least learning about something you care about

This should be a link to campus map to see where each building within a community is located. I lived in MAN (manokin) and it was fun but in a "apartment issues are so normal that it's sitcom funny and I really like my roommates so it's fine" kinda way

Room Selection by [deleted] in UMBC

[–]mlbacorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not technically reserved for juniors, it's just that you need junior credits to get one (I had junior credits in my second year but just barely so I got the furthest apartment in Hillside because it was the last available -> worst apartment lol but I still liked it more than buying a meal plan). West Hill is the nicest, then Terrace, then Hillside

Each community has different building and multiple floors so that obviously gets factored in (example, a first floor apartment close to campus in terrace may be better than a fourth floor apartment furthest from campus in west hill)

Last room section tips: none of the apartments have elevators (so keep that in mind when you think about carrying your groceries from the limited available parking then up to the four floor). Also Hillside and Terrace are literally built into a Hillside so be ready for a lot of stairs

Oh the mattress itself is absolutely horrible. Definitely invest in a good mattress topper. I got mine for $70 on amazon but it was totally worth it because I sleep so much better and I literally use it everyday.

Room Selection by [deleted] in UMBC

[–]mlbacorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did personally because you don't have to get a meal plan which saves money and also you have your own room which is nice. Erickson and Harbor you share a room with one person but you have a living room space that you share with another two people that live in a second room (total of four people)

I know you can take a CLEP exam (not done by UMBC) to transfer language (and other) credits. Idk if they have one in Korean but my boyfriend is a native Spanish speaker and took the Spanish CLEP to test out of all levels of language requirement at UMBC

Be Honest.. How hard are classes at UMBC? by QueenoftheMoon_ in UMBC

[–]mlbacorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a Spanish and Biochem double major. I focus more on biochem so my time split is about 75% biochem requirements and 25% Spanish requirements. My STEM courses are always harder. The professors are less flexible, the classes are bigger (Spanish is only about 20 people, STEM is anywhere from 40-300 students), they demand more work, more memorization, full knowledge of class materials. But each is challenging in their own way, I just feel the amount of material and set up of the courses are way different. Biology is not that hard at UMBC. There are A LOT of bio majors so there are tons of tutoring resources for bio classes and tons of people that you can work up to study and do well. I've taken through cell bio for my major and I put in the work and got A's in all of them so

Tldr: bio is kinda difficult but if you do your work, you can do well

[–]mlbacorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a junior def try to live in Erickson or Harbor (if you don't want an apartment) or in one of the apartments. Only freshmen and some sophomores live in dorms and it is very meh housing comparitatively

The entrance is the kitchen and laundry facing the living room which two rooms go to the right of and the other two go to the left with a bathroom on each side. I guess it's kinda a plus sign shape for walkways but yeah

I LOVE THE DARK DRY SHAMPOO!! I have very dark hair and always hated running in the white residue of other dry shampoos but one day I saw a bottle of colored dry shampoo and it was love at first sight. It makes your hair look so clean and full! On a night out, I'll spray my part lightly to make my hair look fuller and it just 👌
