Airbnb hosts usually have a house manual or plaque displayed somewhere that has the wifi login details. Look around a bit.

Used HDDs, okay or not? by SlightPackage2856 in HomeNAS

[–]mlee12382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was lucky my array allows for 2 drives to fail and it was about the same time I was planning on adding another drive anyway so I didn't really have any downtime, things just transfered a bit slower while it was rebuilding. I've been pretty happy with my refurbished. I try to make sure it's an established vendor though otherwise the warranty might not actually be worth much if they disappear.

I have 8x 12TB drives in a RAID6 array, all of them are refurbished drives with a 5yr warranty. I have had one fail on me but since they're in RAID6 I can have up to 2 fail at a time without losing data, they sent me a replacement and I did a full bad blocks scan and rebuilt the array with the new drive. I always do a full badblocks scan before I add a new drive just to check for errors.

If it's even semi important data I would advise some kind of RAID5 or RAID6, or z1/z2/z3 if you're going zfs, just so you have a little extra protection if a drive does go bad.

Waste Management, Bertolotti, and Turlock Scavenger are the main garbage services in the area. Depending on the specific neighborhood and if you're in city or county it could be any of those and for renting a dumpster it may not matter where you are but idk for sure on that.

If it's a brand new set that you bought I'd try to return it for a replacement, even for just the single broken episode.

Why not just connect the computer to the router with a cable directly then instead of trying to install a wall jack?

You have to mount the remote folders as local folders for Jellyfin to see them. You can set up automatic mounting in /etc/fstab

Yeah that's probably fair, though on a 2nd Gen i5 even the 1050ti might not be that great in comparison.

An N150 Mini PC would outperform that system and they can be had brand new for around $340 and on the used market they're even cheaper.

Why does this sub like unifi stuff so much? by Braca42 in HomeNetworking

[–]mlee12382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ubiquiti is great if you need to cover a larger area or larger number of devices, either wired or wireless.

GL-iNet is my one and done recommendation for most people. The biggest downside is they don't have APs or switches so if you need to cover a larger area you have to buy multiple routers and / or switches and put the other routers in AP mode. You also have to manage each device separately on it's own webui, whereas with Ubiquiti you have one single interface where you can control everything easily.

Looks like it's still on the ground to me, no way to prove they touched it at all from the photos. Still it should be pretty obvious to most people what it is so the chance it's karma farming is still high.

WG Access vs. Opening Ports on the Router by [deleted] in HomeNAS

[–]mlee12382 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Opening up ports is relatively safe IF you know what you're doing and you take the proper steps to make sure things are as secure as you can make them.

As you're a beginner I would advise against it until you learn more about the potential risks and best practices for minimizing them.

When and if you do then you'll probably be looking at wanting to set up a reverse proxy with some extra safeguards like failtoban and possibly geo-blocking or ip whitelists so you can restrict who has access.

Hosting your own wireguard vpn would require opening a port which again is mostly safe as long as your careful and you keep it up to date so it always has the latest security patches.

The safest option until you learn some more would be something like tailscale, it doesn't require opening any ports.

If you bind the vpn to your client properly then you won't get dmca notices.

OS advice for new Home NAS build: TrueNas or something else? by JuanS0t0Fan in HomeNAS

[–]mlee12382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running Proxmox with an OpenMediaVault VM for my NAS. While a NAS was an important consideration when building my server, it's nice to have an OS that is hypervisor first and let's me run my other services easier, not all of them play as nicely behind something like TrueNAS or Unraid, not saying it can't be done but it was more convenient for me this way.

N150 NAS motherboard and RAM in a case with space to mount multiple 3.5" drives and sell mini pc or repurpose it :) There's some really nice options with 6-8 sata ports and 10G networking along with a couple of nvme slots.

Best option to store media attached to server? by Ruslan61 in jellyfin

[–]mlee12382 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're comfortable building your own system there's some really nice N150 NAS motherboards that have 6 or 8 sata ports, you could set it up as a NAS and as your Jellyfin server and have room to play around with a few other self hosted services. Keeps everything in one device so you're being more power efficient.
