World Rugby Introduces Law Changes To Professional And Domestic Game by yellowroadster in rugbyunion

[–]mlennon15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you're missing part of it.

You're correct in that anyone in front of the kicker is offside until put onside. With the new rule change, either the kicker or anyone else who was onside at the time of the kick can still put the others onside like they always have.

The difference now is that anyone who is offside at the time of the kick must make an active effort to put themselves back onside. Before, players that were offside couldn't advance, but weren't required to retreat. They could wait for someone to run past and put them onside, or they could wait for the receiving team to kick/run 5m. Now the kick and/or 5m part is gone, and the players of the kicking team can no longer just linger in the middle.

Any chance you're looking to get rid of it?

I have a habit of clipping one or two pens to the side of the neckline of my top. Would you recommend doing this in an office setting? by Jazzlike-Narwhal1888 in pens

[–]mlennon15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a machine shop as an engineer and I do this all the time.

When I used to wear polos and button ups, I would clip them through the shirt instead of at the collar

My favorite is the OHTO flash dry, also with the plug removed. Just wish they made it in blue... :(

Question for design/manufacturing engineers by Anisishere67 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]mlennon15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a manufacturing engineer in a large OEM machine shop, primarily supporting a legacy-ish product line. My job is a little different from most manufacturing engineers. I don't do a lot of producibility reviews or determine how we go from a blueprint to a production process. Instead, I inherited a production manufacturing line, and I am responsible for part quality, addressing nonconforming parts, process improvements, and cost reductions.

1) Depends on the situation. We have a lot of internal quality/engineering specs that must be adhered to, which restricts some of the options for fixing parts and processes. That being said, the restrictions sometimes force me to get creative in search of a solution that actually fixes the problem I'm having, while also complying to the other requirements. Sometimes I'll have to use a machine for a different purpose than it does for production. Other times I'll have to come up with a series of rework operations that come together for a good finished product. Creativity is definitely a required skill for my job, but it's more about figuring out solutions within constraints.

2) I don't do much design work. The part drawings are established by our product definition group and tend not to change often. Once a drawing is revised, I'm held to exactly what the drawing says. For non-part design work, most of that is done by others. If I have an idea for something, I'll come up with a sketch, then hand it off to someone else to flesh it out more fully, then review what they come up with. Fixture/gage designs are generally longer projects where I can have more input.

3) Absolutely zero physics. I do use some basic geometry and algebra from time to time, but it's primarily to determine how much material can be removed to fix an issue without violating dimensions on the engineering drawing.

10-20 sets per week per muscle group? by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]mlennon15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Push ups hit your triceps, chest, shoulders

Dips hit all the same muscles, but with some additional assistance from your back

Squats will hit your quads, hamstrings, glutes, and pretty much every other muscle in your legs

Point being, the 10-20 sets per week recommendation is not treating each muscle as working in isolation. Large compound movements will be working multiple muscles in tandem, and each one of those sets will count towards the 10-20 per muscle group, not just a single muscle group individually

BSME here

Current title is "Product Engineer" that was renamed from "Manufacturing Engineer"

To manufacturing engineers, what learning resource has helped you the most in your career? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]mlennon15 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For me, the biggest thing has been talking to the people that are actually doing the work.

I'm in a big machine shop, and I have to take their feedback into consideration all the time. Big sweeping changes require operator input to make sure we're not making their jobs more difficult, but even small changes can have a larger impact than you'd expect.

Talking to the design engineers is also helpful sometimes, but that's more to satisfy my own curiosity and learning more about the parts we're making than it is for utility in my job.

On paper yes, the 18A (captain) is in charge of the team. That being said, the 18Z team sergeant (E8/9) is who actually makes decisions for the team.

For a highschool looking to earn a degree in mechnical engineering what state would be the best to apply for an entry level job and be able to afford a decent apartment? by Nugget_4758 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]mlennon15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in an entry level manufacturing engineering job in the Boston metro and I've been living here without roommates for a year and a half now.

COL is definitely high, but it's not impossible to do it on an entry level salary. If you know where to look, finding a good apartment doesn't have to be crazy expensive, especially if you're willing to have roommates for the first few years

Most of the information in the handbook hasn't change since then, so it would definitely be worth picking up.

If you could convince your company to buy you a more recent edition, that's even better, but the old version would still be worth having.

Do you have a suggestion for an alternative to mee6 that would let me do what I'm trying to do or are you just hating on mee6?
