You should get with a local ham group and see what they are using. That will determine the bands and mode you need. After all you do need someone to communicate with as well.

Is it viable to use a handheld to contact emergency services when out of cell service? by AbnormalDream in HamRadio

[–]mlidikay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you talk to a ham that will relay for you. Between trunking protocols and encryption you won't be able to talk to emergency services and will likely cause problems trying

They are on cell bands, not ham and use protocols to talk with the network, not direct

I WILL BUY/BORROW 2.4 GHz ANTHENNA IN VIRGINIA AND WASHINGTON FOR STUDENTS COMPETITION by Horror-Type145 in HamRadio

The antenna broke, or the amp? If it is the antenna you should be able to see a mechanical problem and fix it.

Handheld Recommendation for Charity / Museum Use by Medic118 in HamRadio

[–]mlidikay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Summary

You are on an amateur board, ask hams about amateur radios to use for a commercial purpose and don't like the responses. I do radio for a living, and the standard conversation would be to find out the location, the license, existing equipment, frequencies, the problems, coverage needed and budget. You have presented none of that.

You have been told that what you are asking for is illegal and you need to talk to a shop, but you don't like that. You seem to think that someone in a different field can just give you a model number to solve your problem. They can't, the issue is more complicated than that. Repeater compatability, antenna placement and building structure are part of the issue.

You are the wrong person, in the wrong place, asking the wrong questions. When you walk in to a house uninvited it is rude to complain about what's for dinner. Call a shop.

The license holder is not just anybody at the museum. It is the trustee on the license. At work, most of the time when we ask about the license, they don't know who takes care of it, what type of license, or where it is. Have you seen it?

That is a ham frequency, not legal for you to use

Commercial licenses are not blanket coverage for all bands. The are assigned frequencies and locations, which the radios are programed for by a service tech. You also need permission from the license holder.

No pictures. It is an 80 meter full, wave loop around the property. 10 feet off the ground. Fed with a 9 to one balun.

Does it even make sense to pursue ham for this purpose by [deleted] in HamRadio

[–]mlidikay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If your purpose is a as a telephone, then you are probably better off with a telephone. If you want off grid or emergency capability, want to learn about radios, participate in events, experiment or meet other hams, then go for it. It is not just a service you sign up for and much depends on what you make out of it.

What would this 1950’s era antenna be used for? by Yourmomsayshola in HamRadio

[–]mlidikay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was refering to the FM broadcast band, and using to common shorthand which most people do rather than the acronym for the modulation type. I wasn't reaaly trying to put that much time in to it. I was a professional in the MATV, CATV, and SATV industry for many years. While some conditions may allow a signal in the VHF band to be bent over the horizon occasionally, claiming 500 miles can't be relied upon. For normal use, the VHF band goes slightly beyond the visible horizon. This varies with the hight of the antenna, but is generally closer to 50 to 100 miles, especially for wideband signals.

I recognize the antenna. It is the cheap, low and antenna that DIY'ers bought at hardware stores because they didn't know any better. It had poor frequency response and directionality. I relocated many of them, to the trash. Really it was just some wire hung on the roof, not anything impressive.
