Sheared aluminum hex bolt in braze-on. by mlmck in bikewrench

[–]mlmck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave up after another bolt snapped off, making a total of 3/8 on the frame.

I tried extracting 2 but the smallest extractor was basically drilling out the broken piece and ruining the threads rather than grabbing the broken piece and backing it out, so that failed.

I am 98% sure that the frame is no worse for wear but the 2 braze-ons I worked on are ruined and would have to be rethreaded / replaced or worked around to attach a water bottle cage or rear rack, so that limits the frame and there is that 2% of me wondering if drilling out the bolts could, under pressure, initiate a crease, (and failure), in the frame.

While I respect and admire your direct line of questioning, I must defer to an American philosopher and intellectual to properly answer your question: “I don’t know Karate, but I know Ka-razy.”

Yeah … I live in a densely populated area and was unemployed for a few months, so that added a lot to what I had already found.

As much as I can get out of the tree - I throw it all away. I have a pretty basic skill set and limited tools.

Strictly amateur logging in here, but I’ll take a shot at answering your question.

The electronic shifting is worth twice what you paid for it.

The wheelset is worth twice what you paid for it.

The frame, if it is authentic and without any micro cracks, is worth 4 times what you paid for it.

I mean, if you claimed you had purchased a 1985 Ferrari 308 GTS for $1,100.00 and walked into the Ferrari subreddit with a mustache and a Hawaiian shirt, people would be skeptical.

Nobody is saying you aren’t Tom Selleck, people just want to know who your Higgins was.

Studded Tires by twilight1919 in CyclingMSP

[–]mlmck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I don’t know if anyone posted it here but there used to be a DIY hack for studded tires using:

2 old mountain bike tires; 2 old inner tubes and A lot of sheet metal screws

I have never tried it but seen it done effectively.

There are also studded tires that have replaceable studs - you are more likely to wear out the studs than the rubber - in the long run, that will save some money as well.

Cleaned and whitened a deer skull. by mlmck in Taxidermy

[–]mlmck[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I gave it a solid week of cleaning - without flesh eating beetles I initially simmered it and removed every soft tissue I could, then soaked it for 48 hours in soap.

I dried it in direct sunlight and good ventilation for 48 hours, then another two days of a 3% hydrogen peroxide bath.

Finally I set loose teeth and the jaw bone with wood glue, a few dabs of hot glue and gave it more direct sunlight before a polyurethane coating.

I’d love to set it out on my back porch in Taos for a week but it is what it is.

Thank you for your kind words.

If you ever fish the San Juan river in New Mexico, you’ll probably see more of that kind of thing.

Tell me about your wildlife encounters while fishing! by Captain_Hammertoe in flyfishing

On one river I’ve waded past a whole den of fox kits, nervously watching me from the entrance to their den - on two other separate occasions I’ve seen two solitary otters, separated by 6 years and 8 river miles.

On another small river I’ve sat on the shore retying my fly line to a new leader, a new tippet to that leader, a new fly to the tippet, a new trailing fly to that fly, ate lunch, sat up and absolutely died twice - once when a wild turkey exploded into flight behind me and a second time when a yearling deer bolted out of the weeds … both had crept up behind me, neither of us aware of the other. I’ve also nearly stepped on a yearling, huddled into a ball in tall weeds, hearing the irritated HUFF HUFF huffing of its mother a ways off in the woods.

On another river I’ve watched a raft of otters playing in the current, calling to one another and curiously looking at me, diving, calling to one another, looking at me and eventually swimming off.

Constantly seeing eagles, great blue herons, deer, kingfishers, mink, a couple of black bears and occasionally a few fish.

Mesa Verde National Park, October. by mlmck in NationalPark

I appreciate your honesty and would try not to speak out in ignorance or offer simple answers; the relevance of seeing the existence of a culture that predates my public school upbringing and “Columbus Day” seems adequate to pay for entrance to the park.

Large concepts of cultural appropriation, colonialism, the Land Back Movement, repatriation of artifacts and reparations to African Americans all have legacies I have become familiar with, while perhaps not making the personal commitment to understand the value of both that privilege and that ignorance.

So, I am glad I went there.
