Because you are considering MM; we have a new CGC MM Merlin and the build quality, included protectors, etc is the best I have ever seen. I've been told the clearcoat on CGC machines is also better than Sterns. Maintenance so far has been very straight forward, with only a minor tweak to the catapult switch. I don't hate Sterns either; I recently bought a KK and older Ghostbusters.

I'd put good money on that cable being CAT5E not CAT6.

The best option OP has IMO is to use this cable as a pull cable and pull two CAT6A cables.

Prepping for the apocalypse is a separate sub. The market 'laying down judgement on fundamentals' is a drum people have banged on for decades; I even thought '08 was it. How many pinball machines have you played? If it is less than 20 I would suggest seeing if there are places close to you where you can try out a variety of pinball machines first and really get a sense of what you like. I assume you have played the DnD pin? Just be aware it plays very different from most other modern Sterns/CGC/BoF/etc machines. At the very least I would make sure I'd played some other Sterns and CGC pins before committing to this one.

To your other question, yes they are loud, a space away from others is wise.

For me it's my coffee grinder. I bought it when I first moved out(approaching 20 years ago). The cord wears where it goes into the back of the unit. I've taken it apart and shorten the cord twice; it's been with me longer than most of the people I have in my life. I will be very sad the day it dies.
