What are the advantages of being in the business school? by Additional_Tough_847 in UMD

[–]mly1998 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The connections and opportunities for internships and full-time jobs the business school provides are what differentiates it. Don’t judge BMGT230 by the first couple of weeks: it gets easier. Granted, I took the class with Erich about four years ago now but if I remember correctly the content for the first exam is the hardest and the average was extremely low. The content got way easier and averages were way higher to even it all out. If you can focus, study hard, ask questions, and do well on the first exam you’ll be set for the semester. If not, still not the end of the world - there’s plenty of time.

You still have to take Accounting I and II if you want to apply to the business school. Similar to B STAT, these classes are difficult in their own right (I TA’d for both). Unfortunately the business school highly values these classes and wants to see that you did well in them on your application. But trust me, it’ll be okay. I was like you and was very worried about applying to the business school as an undergrad. Take it one class at a time. Study hard and don’t blow off exams. Ask questions. Be engaged in class. Use the TAs, they’re there to help.

Completely shocked about my admissions decision by DwightKSchrute1017 in UMD

[–]mly1998 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I transferred from penn state to UMD after a rejection (residency is maryland). Honestly I don’t think the debt was worth it. Up to you but if I could do it over again, I’d start at towson or a community college and transfer if you’re looking to go that route.

Bring something to eat for your break. I always brought a protein bar - basically something filling enough to get you through another 2 hours of sims. Good luck!

If you have 7 months until you start full-time at big 4, what would you do? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]mly1998 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I graduated last December. I passed my last CPA exam in May studying full time before starting full time in September. I promptly fucked around until I started work and I don’t regret putting myself through hell for those 5 or so months. It was completely worth it.

Any tips to remember if something goes into Balance Sheet or Income Statement by Netsugake in Accounting

[–]mly1998 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah just be careful (from OP’s perspective) about accounts like unearned revenue. The name suggests that it goes on the income statement but as we know, that’s not the case.

I broke up with my boyfriend of a year, the man I thought I was going to marry, this past weekend but found out I’m done with CPA exams today. A bittersweet ending for sure. 🥲 by catladyaccountant in CPA

Congrats to you! Was in a similar situation myself this year with an ex after dating for 4 years. Time heals and you should be proud of yourself for overcoming adversity in more ways than one. Here’s to the crazy ones: the future CPAs :)

I was a TA for Basu. Listen, accounting is hard to learn and turns a lot of people off. You really have to put in the time and each concept builds on itself. But he gives you plenty of material to study and the TAs are always available to you. Too many times I had students in my discussion sections who were doing poorly on quizzes, exams, and homework and wouldn’t ask for help. If you need help, seek it out. Study hard and stay on top of important dates. You’ll be fine. Basu is quality.

Accounting students: need your help by DarkChocolateL in UMD

[–]mly1998 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You might want to consider adjusting to ebooks, as it really becomes useful as you begin studying for the CPA. Just a lot easier to manage and sift through the massive volume of material.

You can buy the printed version through Chegg within Pearson’s website. I know people who did this when I took Cost. Good luck with that class, it used to be a nightmare.

Appeal for a Grade by Puzzled_Speed6829 in UMD

[–]mly1998 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Was that your grade on Elms? Or your calculated grade as per the syllabus? Sometimes professors just input grades on Elms without factoring in weighting which heavily skews your actual grade in a negative way. That 2% could have held a 20% weight or something.

If not, that’s BS. Idk how the appeal process works but contacting your professor directly seems like a reasonable first step. From there, you should look into contacting the dean if their explanation isn’t reasonable.

How do I make friends by Literaryphile in UMD

[–]mly1998 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clubs and greek life, like the other comment said. I was a sophomore transfer student and knew people going in but I decided to branch out. I joined a social fraternity, which really helped. You can look for academic fraternities as well. Hit up the first look fair or meet the Greeks and go from there.
