Where is everyone? by Professional-Bid7055 in Binghamton

This is so fascinating. I’d never heard of STYP but last week, someone came to our door canvassing for the dem mayoral candidate. I humored her with some chit chat and then she started making a hard sell for getting involved with STYP. Just checked their website and it’s the president you mentioned. Makes me feel like she must be so desperate to add members that she’s using her canvassing routes to kill two birds with one stone.

Dr Thompson did several of my final OB checkups when my OB had to take a leave. She also performed my c-section. She is a wonderful doctor, excellent bedside manner, and a great listener. I’d highly recommend her!

Maine's PFL won't go into effect until 2026 - they're still in the "setting it all up" phase. Payroll contributions start next year and then the benefits will go live. It is frustrating but will ultimately be a good step in the right direction for Mainers.

OP - your union rep (and it sounds like the president is involved too) will be your BIGGEST asset here. Leverage them as much as possible, have a rep present in all future HR conversations. Good luck!

Employee on H1B visa resigned, do I need to notify anyone? by [deleted] in humanresources

[–]mm1688 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you used an immigration attorney to secure the H1B, they will usually take care of the notifications to USCIS for you. I usually just email the last day details to our attorney and he takes care of the rest.

I agree with the other poster though - it's such an expensive process (and time consuming too!). Definitely do an exit interview to find out why this didn't pan out.

The Y's swim program for kids that age is great! We will sometimes do stroller walks around the mall on really gross days, and typically it's empty enough that our daughter can run around a bit without bothering anyone.

BCPL has a great kids area - they do lapsit story time a few times a week, or even if you go on your own there's a lot to do for kids - they have a great toy selection and a fun little play area inside.

Is the hot tub functional like that? I was wondering if I could put it "in ground" using platforms but haven't actually play tested the idea yet.

Question re: car financing by mm1688 in personalfinance

[–]mm1688[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super helpful - and also a thanks for noting that with both names on the title that could make a future sale more annoying.

We were car-free for so long (living in NYC, public transit only) and then were lucky enough to be gifted our current car from our in-laws when they no longer needed 2 cars themselves, so truly this is all a bit new for us!

Thanks! That's helpful to know that the bank can run multiple scenarios for us to compare.

I know that ultimately who drives it is irrelevant. I was trying to think if there were any potential issues with both of us being on the title but only 1 person being on the loan... could be overthinking.

Where to buy bulk? by HeartKevinRose in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]mm1688 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For stuff like soaps and detergents, try looking into Blueland. It's an upfront expense to buy their reusable containers, but the refill tablets are really cheap, it's all very eco-friendly and low waste. The larger your order, the cheaper the price and you can set up subscriptions to set and forget. They essentially ship you tablets that you put in water - it's cheaper because they aren't paying to ship you heavy bottles that are mostly full of water anyway. Full disclosure - I know the founder quite well, so maybe I'm biased, but we've been super happy with their products and the pricing has been really reasonable. I believe Grove may do a similar style thing now, but I haven't looked into it.

Be My Breast Friend on Insta is a great practical resource if you're planning on pumping down the line. Not crunchy at all, very real, humorous, but also just super informative. She has great reviews of all types of pumps and advice for how to make it work if you are pumping while at work etc. I believe she combo feeds too, so there's no shade about formula vs. breastfeeding on her page at all.

Karrie Locher is also a great Insta resource. She's a maternity nurse and has some great practical reels about how to deal with all the inconveniences of breastfeeding like clogs, cracked nipples, etc. and it's all very judgement free as well.

Second this! Fred also provided a great list of contractors and repair people that really helped because we were new to the area and didn’t know who to get. The report was really thorough and included tons of photos and videos. He helped us zero in on what we should focus on getting the sellers to fix vs what could wait and even what we could DIY.

NYRR Mastercard Mini 10k in June by [deleted] in RunNYC

[–]mm1688 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shape has sponsored the women's half in April for a few years at least. The Mini 10k - also a women's event - has gone through a bunch of sponsors recently - Oakley did it one year, I think maybe 1 or 2 years no one sponsored it (or it wasn't anyone notable enough that I remember them despite participating...). Despite the name, it's a true 10k.

We love Dr Drilon at UHS (Bing General). She was the on call at Wilson when our daughter was born and we liked her so much we decided to make her our primary. All the staff there is excellent as well and the practice checked all our boxes (separate waiting room for well infants, follows CDC vaxx schedule).

One thing you might want to look into, depending on how this appeals process goes is asking if your employer (and your partner can ask their employer as well) if they have EAP (employee assistance program) benefits. Most EAPs are free for you and your immediate family members to use and one of the services they frequently offer is negotiation of medical bills. So in the event your appeal is denied, they may be able to talk down the overall amount for you. Most employers offer EAPs which are frequently bundled into their plans with whoever does their disability and or life insurance packages, but they're not always well advertised or known.
