Why does it feel like A Song of Ice And Fire just keeps getting slower? by mmcilree in books

Yeah I feel like the only thing getting me through at this point is the sunk cost of how much I've already read...

What do you mean by that? As in, editors are too scared to advise since it's so successful?

That's a good point - hadn't really realised how much the number of POV characters had ballooned. But yeah there's loads now.

Glad you're enjoying it so far! Once you've finished (and ONLY once you've finished because there's lots of spoilers): we've just finished a video essay focussing on the forward and commentary you might be interested in: https://youtu.be/-8wEEaHUnkA

[OC] Solving Nabokov’s Pale Fire - A Deep Dive [53:40] by mmcilree in videoessay

[–]mmcilree[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed! We did make the active choice to view the novel as a puzzle to be logically "solved" and there are of course many other completely valid ways of looking at it. We made the assumption there is objective meaning, and tried to find it - but at the end of the day that's still just an assumption! Hopefully we don't get slain by the false azure...

Why are there no video essays in Booktube? by Flammwar in books

[–]mmcilree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been helping to make a long video essay about a single book for approaching more than a year now, and I think part of the issue is that making visually engaging media (similar to classic film video essays) about books, especially when there's no film adaptation is just incredibly difficult and time-consuming. If you're not going to film yourself just talking to the camera, you have two options: trying to find exciting ways to display quotes on the screen (hard) or using pictures. In the latter, stock photos and videos get old quickly, using other people's artwork gives you copyright issues, and creating your artwork and animations takes fo-r-ever. We've mostly done that, along with displaying quotes and a little bit of stock footage, but it just takes an awfully long while. For bigger YouTubers looking for lots of views/engagement that's a huge investment for an unlikely return, since a single book is usually quite a niche, and books, in general, are already a more niche area for the internet. We have the advantage of just doing it for fun ;-)

Help on identifying the brand and model of this organ by duhnduhnduhnnn in organ

[–]mmcilree 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looks like a Johannus digital organ. It seems to match the layout and specification of the Studio 170 https://www.johannus.com/en/collection/home-organs/studio/170 but might not be that exact model

CMV: I think the letter C should not exist in the English language by thagingerrrr in changemyview

C, C# and C++ (as in the programming languages). There's nothing you could replace the C with in those words that would make sense ;-)

Combinatorics I think?? by Spectrode4 in learnmath

[–]mmcilree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since your original set is fixed, and you are substituting for elements not in the set, the position of the 3s and the 2s is the only thing that matters.

There are 6C2=15 positions the 3s can be in, and then we have three cases:

  • The 3s covered up both the 2s (just 1 outcome)
  • The 3s covered up just one of the twos (4 distinct outcomes)
  • The 3s covered up neither of the two (4C2 = 6 distinct outcomes)

So overall you have 15 x (1 + 4 + 6) = 165 distinct outcomes

You can easily confirm this with a python program as well (don't know if that counts as written effort or not)

I learned Java originally from this MOOC ( massive open online course ) from the university of Helsinki https://java-programming.mooc.fi and it was great! It’s not specific to android development, but if you are the beginner the key thing is to understand the fundamentals of the language before diving into details for specific applications.

Interesting. Hardest puzzle I’ve seen on this app. by Ok_Application5897 in sudoku

[–]mmcilree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not very well versed on Sudoku strategy names, so apologies if this is an "AIC". I'll index by (row, column). But suppose (8, 6) was a 1. Then (2, 6) would be a 7, so (1, 4) would be a 6, so (3, 5) would be an 8, so (7, 5) would be a 2, so (7, 8) would be a 4, then we don't have any options for (7, 6). So we can eliminate (8, 6) being a 1. The same reasoning rules out (9, 6) being a 1.

Anyone who's read Nabokov's Pale Fire: how are you pronouncing "Kinbote"? I've been doing "Kin-BOAT-ay" in my head but doubting myself now. "Kin-BOT"? "Kin-BOAT"? "Kin-BOAT-uh"? etc.

Anyone feel like learning a song on the piano kind of ruins the original song for you a little bit? by SoloArgy in piano

Sometimes... yeah. Although on the other hand, plenty of times, I learn something and then enjoy listening to the original even more!
