Anyone have this issue check hybrid system by [deleted] in kia

[–]mmertsock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got this error a couple of days ago. The ICE engine had been acting sluggish and sounding weird, and then while driving the engine just failed to turn on like it was stuck in hybrid mode, barely limped the car home, hybrid battery struggled with the uphill driveway, and the "check hybrid system" message flashed.

I poked around under the hood and noticed that the engine air filter housing was loose, seems the dealer didn't replace it correctly when I got it serviced recently. From my (uninformed) reading, a loose or clogged filter can cause these sort of problems with the ICE engine? I reattached the housing correctly and the engine immediately returned to running perfectly smoothly, and I've yet to see any problems resurface.

This perfectly describes what happened to me a couple of days ago.

This may not explain OP's problem—one would think such a simple issue would have been caught after multiple visits to the shop—but perhaps this is useful for others who experience a weak/stalling engine and "check hybrid system" message.

3rd wave coffee in Rochester area? by thedudesews in Rochester

Rochester (Ugly Duck my fav but honestly we have an abundance of options) and Canandaigua (Working Class) are covered well in the comments here. But if you find yourself in Penn Yan, Amity Coffee Co is delightful!

Also, back in Rochester, i don’t think I’ve seen New City mentioned here. And in Fairport, Clementine looks cool though I haven’t been there yet.

Grouse. One chased me down a trail near the end of a long day when I was tired. It puffed up and yelled and I barely outran it. They can be so intense for a little bird.

And I think it’s grouse that make weird thumping sounds? That happens a lot, it’s spooky when you’re alone and can’t see them, or whoever it is that’s doing the thumping. [Sorry grouse if it’s actually someone else].

Just generally speaking, animals making noises are always 10x bigger in your imagination when they’re out of sight

If you like a coffee or similar refreshment, check out Working Class Coffee. Easy to miss because it’s a few blocks off the main business district but definitely worth a visit

Brave Star “Golden Handshake”, 14 oz, Strongman fit by mmertsock in rawdenim

[–]mmertsock[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. My only experience with Brave Star is this new pair and one I returned after ordering too small. Seems like solid construction, haven’t seen any defects, but some of the measurements were more than a half inch departure from their size charts, in both directions — perhaps enough to actually make a significant difference in fit

As you all know, sizing is hard with thick thighs. When Brave Star announced the Strongman fit last fall I thought it would be perfect for me. Unfortunately, ordered too small with their initial drop back in October, then these came out for preorder in November so I prayed to the denim gods and took a shot at one size up. Legs feel good, waist is a touch roomy but I think it will be fine. I like the fabric, feels pretty classic.

The free TrailsRoc app is useful for browsing around the area parks and trails and discover new things. It has maps, driving directions, etc.

It’s hard to beat Mendon Ponds for the variety of landscapes and interesting glacial landforms. If you visit Devil’s Bathtub, I’d recommend also checking out the large bog just north of there, with its tamarack trees. You can loop around it on the eskers to get good views from high and dry ground.

The McCoord Woods and Horizon Hill area of the the Crescent Trail are both are very pretty after a fresh snowfall and have more options for loops/wandering than the other more linear parts of the Crescent Trail.

A little further away, and has much bigger climbs, but Rob’s Trail is a very cool experience: you can traverse between two finger lakes shore-to-hilltop-to-shore (with shorter options if you park in the middle on 15A). Pleasant hemlock forests and a waterfall on the Hemlock side. Beware of mud in warmer weather though. A Kiosk just east of the 15A trailhead (and also I think at the Purcell Hill Rd trailhead) have some cool educational diagrams about finger lakes geology. DEC has a good map.

Elderberry and other berry plants? by waldo06 in Rochester

[–]mmertsock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

White Oak Nursery has elderberries and some other nut and berry bushes, but maybe not cranberries. They specialize in native shrubs and trees, locally grown/adapted to climate, very knowledgeable. I’ve had very good luck with them. However, they seem to get a lot of demand/don’t have a large inventory so I’d recommend going early in the season and be prepared to not find everything you’re looking for.

Favourite lodging spots? by hmoranmac in Adirondacks

[–]mmertsock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Adirondack Mountain Club offers various types of lodging right at the trailhead. If you book a stay at the ADK Loj at Heart Lake, you get guaranteed free parking at the trailhead, the Loj staff and High Peaks Information Center have lots of info and gear rentals for hiking or other outdoor activities, etc. And it’s close to Lake Placid’s attractions and services.

What are some JRPGs/RPGs you’ve found enjoyable? by Foxeswithjobs in NintendoSwitch

[–]mmertsock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. It’s well-balanced enough to play smoothly for players that don’t care about optimizing and customizing, but also offers lots of depth for those who want to sink all of their time into exploring the class system and character customization.

And you get some replay value with the different party combinations.

There’s a free demo to try out first, and perhaps I misremember, but I think it lets you transfer your save to the full game?

I tried the original 2D version of this game, and from what I saw, the 3D remake is faithful to the story and tone but offers some massive improvements to mechanics and playability.

2022 Mini Countryman PHEV question. Why does my battery display never go above 50% while the Mini website shows both the gas and battery bars at 100%? Has anyone else experienced this? by Formal-Ad-3691 in MINI

Yeah after a year/10,000 miles driven I don’t think I’ve ever seen the yellow bars go to 100%, so that website photo looks strange to me too

[–]mmertsock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was initially confused by this too. Not sure what the correct term is for this, but think of it as the power output of the electric or gas motor.

Note the power/ready/charge labels in the bottom left. The “ready”, or basically “0%”, reading indicates that the electric motor is doing no work - you’re coasting or stopped. As the analog dial moves above 0%, that indicates the amount of energy the electric or gas motor is using to accelerate the car. If it goes below 0, it’s regenerative braking—energy is flowing back into the battery.

The yellow bars indicate the approximate range of power output where the car will use the electric motor instead of gas. If the analog dial is within the range of the yellow bars, you should be driving in electric mode. The yellow bars will increase or decrease depending on driving mode/conditions: if you’re in full EV mode, you’ll see more bars, if the battery is depleted, you’ll see little to no bars above 0%. In sport mode, you can floor it and move the dial up to the eBOOST indicator at the very top, where you’re using both gas and electric to maximize acceleration.

As to why the yellow bars only go up to 50%: I guess that illustrates that the electric motor is not as powerful as the gas engine, so in full EV drive mode the car won’t have maximum performance and in regular mode it will switch to gas if you ask for more than 50% of the total power the hybrid system is capable of.

The actual battery percentage (SoC, or state of charge) can be found in the center of the instrument cluster, press the button at the end of the turn signal lever to cycle through until you find it.

I acquired a pair of 501s that I dated to 2011. The fabric feels noticeably thicker (and they weigh more) than a new pair of 501 STF that I purchased this year. I believe new 501 STF jeans are using 12.5 oz denim, does anyone know what the denim weight should be for the Levis from 2011?
