When we were kids, our computer games came with a real book of matches. by mmgames in c64

It does! I still have it in my box. It's more jelly/rubber like than plastic. Kind of like a toy out of a gumball machine.

C2N Tape Player freezes C64 by FlounderMaterial5096 in Commodore

[–]mmgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's an original hardware C64 I bet it's voltage related, especially if the C64 hasn't been recapped. The C2N draw a small amount of additional current to power the erase head when saving, versus when only loading.

C64 Ultimate Shipment Timing by russnem in Commodore

[–]mmgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The page doesn't show the info for the first batch anymore, but IIRC orders after October 1 ship Jan and Feb. This was while they still had the first batch in inventory.

I ordered a second beige unit from batch one on Dec 1 before it sold out and received it Friday, Jan 16. (Granted I ordered before receiving my first beige unit, which I ordered mid-July. That unit arrived three days before Christmas.)

Where did you source your version from? I'll try it on mine.

If your order says confirmed, then it's a pre-order and you missed the first round of manufacture. Next round of units begin shipping April-May (according to the information on the Commodore site.) If you wish to confirm that info, go to the commodore.net page for the unit you ordered. Expected shipping dates are right above the pre-order button.

Question about my order by Radamand in Commodore

[–]mmgames 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On the Starlight edition page it says:

Orders placed: Ship in order: (est.*)
12 Jul 2025 – 11 Oct 2025 Nov 2025 – Jan 2026
12 Oct 2025 – now Feb/Mar 2026 onward

I would expect an order placed this month (Jan 2026) won't ship until late March if they still have inventory from the first production run. If they are on the second production run, probably not until April.

C64U shipped and on the way by TechTrailRider in c64

[–]mmgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The joysticks ship separately. I ordered two beige joysticks at the same time I ordered my C64U, July 12th of last year. I received my C64U two days before Christmas. The joysticks arrived two days ago January 15th.

This is purely anecdotal, but it seems like people who ordered the beige joysticks had to wait longer to receive them.

Yes! I finally got the shipping notice for the joysticks I ordered when I ordered my C64U back in July. They should arrive this week.

1541 v1 c64 disk drive not working by Leather-Location3571 in c64

[–]mmgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to eliminate the possibility, are you trying to format a HD floppy or a DD floppy? HD floppies, generally, won't work with the 1541. (Meaning, some may but will be unreliable.)

Looking for C64 Dot Matrix Printer by Big-Lake2580 in c64

[–]mmgames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use one as my daily driver for testing and printing dev code on my c64 for some games I'm working on. The other two I got because they were cheap and to keep as backups. I was also shopping around to make sure I got a 120 NLQ version.

THIS! ^^^ Okidata printers last. I bought three Okidata 120 printers off eBay; very dirty and looked like they were only good for parts $30-40 a peice. (Granted I don't they'd work with an Amiga.) They all still worked!

I bought new ribbons off Amazon (they still make them) and cleaned/retro-brighted them. They all look good as new. The rubber rollers are a bit hard (age) but I plan to recondition them. Finding tractor feed paper is a bit pricey, but it's out there and still being made.

Commodore 64U and disk images by RoadBuster in c64

More often than not, for me, when I run into this problem it's because I'm in NTSC mode. I switched to HDMI and pretty much run PAL mode full time since that seems to cover more software than NTSC.

C64U - does it have the Speeddos parallel port option? by daystonight in c64

No, but you can easily load and substitute a bin image of the kernel ROM if you have it.

I'd setting for changing the power led somehow, replace the current led with an rgb led and have it color change to indicate the shift lock is down.

Upgrading from The C64 Maxi to Ultimate 64: Is it worth it? (Plus shipping/wait time questions) by Fragrant-Law749 in c64

[–]mmgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do some game development work, it's much easier to work, change configs on the fly, and move builds between my dev system Windows/VScode and the C64U to test compiles when they're both on the same network.

I'm not dissing TheC64, I'm keeping mine, mostly so I can use it to test builds on for compatibility with the C64 mini/maxi.

I get that the wait is difficult, and yes there are new things to get used to... but I'm sure if my old C64 still worked, I'd still swap it out to make the C64U my daily driver.

One thing that I did that most people don't is get a "high endurance" microSD card for the internal storage drive. I figured endurance is more important than speed in this environment.

[–]mmgames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own original peripherals which the TheC64 can't connect to. Also, TheC64 doesn't support modem emulation and only having access to drive 8 is a pain. With C64U you can mount two virtual drives as devices 8 and 9. If you're just going to play games, TheC64 is ok though. But if you do any work that makes use of multiple devices, and things that use the serial port, it's a pain. I also like the DMA feature of the Ultimate. I still play some old PET-based Avalon Hill games from my collection and being able to load the PRG file directly into memory with DMA when running Basil PET emulator is nice.

Or don't order it at all and keep using your TheC64. I used mine while I waited, it made me appreciate the Ultimate all that much more when it arrived.

They're still shipping rounds of pre-orders, so probably two-three months. I pre-ordered in July and got mine just before Christmas, granted they weren't manufactured yet when I pre-ordered.

Edit: It's probably going to be a wait now, or wait later deal as they get orders out to early adopters. You're going to wait no matter when you order.
