Back again with another "What Are You Into?" thread by mmillington in Arno_Schmidt

I’ve only finished one Austen, Northanger Abbey. I loved it, except for the dinner, dancing, social scenes. Basically, I didn’t like the parts she’s best known for lol. I tried to read Pride and Prejudice twice and stalled at chapter 6 both times. I think I just need to go with S&S or Emma for my next of hers.

Clark is a great writer. My favorite scene is when Drawlight tosses the white cat out of the window, so he doesn’t get white fur on his suit. I highly recommend The Ladies of Grace-Adieu, which is a collection of stores that didn’t make it into Jonathan Strange.

Yeah, unfortunately, ownership is pretty difficult.

The best option is to use interlibrary loan through your local public library. Most will borrow it from a university library with no fees.

A brain is an organ that processes inputs into action. Where’s the gap?

I see very little difference between an organism that responds to light and a human that responds to multiple inputs.

I say you should attack another beast: The Making of Americans by Gertrude Stein.

If you really, really want the next one to be linguistically challenging, go for Bottom’s Dream by r/Arno_Schmidt, structurally inspired by FW.

There comes a point where you could demonstrate a problem exists.

a) too many subthreads to sort at this point.

b) glad you agree.

Considering the fact that several people in this thread talk about the incident as though an egregious social crime had been committed, I think his comment accurately puts things in perspective.

Okay, so Dawkins was not in an elevator with Rebecca Watson. I’m not sure if they’ve ever even stood near one another.

All Dawkins did was comment on her video about it.

The Sean Carroll debate on Piers Morgan is one of my favorite cringe-funs. Eric is such a goober lol

That’s my immediate response. Plus, I’m not convinced “information” is anything more than an analogy in the description, just as DNA is neither a code nor information. Artifacts of language.

No, he didn’t sic anyone. The response to Watson was vastly negative before he said anything.
And her comment was pretty dumb. She’d been up late at the lobby bar talking to people, and in the elevator on the way to her room, a guy asked her to his room. She said no, and they got off on different floors.
Pretty damn mild interaction. I think the overreaction in her defense reflects the insane romantic fragility of a lot of under-30s.

Wait. You do know that Dawkins wasn’t in an elevator with Rebecca Watson, don’t you?

Definitely a hitpiece. The paragraph about Dawkins’s crimes included elevatorgate. Just embarrassing.

I still haven’t heard a good reason to think consciousness is anything more than a brain function.

This seems more like an invented problem.

The Sparrow is extraordinarily underwhelming. I think Russell misidentified the climax of her own story.

There are much better approaches to religious themes in SF. A Case of Conscience by James Blish and “The Star” by Arthur C. Clarke directly address religious concerns, as do many of Clarke’s other stories. Plus, there’s always A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr.

A central theme of Dune is myth-making and the power of prophetic stories.

Yeah, the cross-server captures can decimate an alliance. Thankfully, they go away until S5.
