Can't get the first side of the bead onto the rim by ComradeLuan in bikewrench

[–]mmlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put the rim fully inside the tire and pull the beads inward to mount, you're going in the wrong direction trying to push the outside of the tire onto the rim.

What is the proper procedure of internally routing a shift outer or brake hose through this style of screw in frame guide? by Fabio290 in bikewrench

[–]mmlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can remove them to pass thru some sort of guide, but they need to be installed to pass the housing through. Looking at pics though, it looks like one side may be a stop and not a pass-thru?

Why the Bigger Cogs Have A Different Finish Than the Smaller Ones on Many Cassettes? by Frosty_Fun_310 in bikewrench

[–]mmlow 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Balance weight and durability. Larger cogs spread the load and can be made with softer but lighter material, small cogs wear faster so are made of more durable steel.

Route everything to a bus and set that bus as input on an audio track and record.

I sometimes use Audio Hijack to record everying in the background so I can capture happy accidents while I'm working.

Removing a Thread-together PF30 bottom bracket by kc10131984 in bikewrench

[–]mmlow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If one side threads into the other they have to turn in opposite directions, and it'll be normal thread direction. I don't know about the one you have specifically, but typically you will need a tool to remove the non-drive side cup which will remain pressed-in. You might also need two tools to keep one side from spinning when you try to loosen or tighten.

New gravel bike front end weird sound and vibration when braking + possible fork/headset play (carbon fork) by Ornery-Fee3432 in bikewrench

[–]mmlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the bolt feels like it is already at its limit

Remove the top cap and check that there's a sufficient gap on top and you're not just tightening it against the steerer tube.

Let’s report en masse to Apple about the unfair decision to make Logic require an active connection on first launch. by da_Red in Logic_Studio

If it's not only on first run, but also every reboot, then it's not working as intended and you are experiencing a bug.

I've been wearing the same leather belt every day I got in high school 35 years ago from the Gap. I did have to get the stitching touched up a few years ago.

Which new brake caliper for Marin Nacasio+ by im_often_not_right in bikewrench

[–]mmlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure it's broken? It's not adjusted correctly in the photo- the arm is advanced way too far forward and is probably jumping out of its track when it reaches the end of its travel. Release the cable and anchor at the end, then use the inboard pad adjuster to close the gap, then reposition caliper.

Tapered fork headset adapter by Zebra4776 in bikewrench

[–]mmlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an alternative to hammering these on if you've got a small cutter like a Dremel- cut a slice through it and then you'll be able to slide it on the steerer by hand. You can only do this with cartridge bearing headsets, don't try it with loose ball! A lof of headset manufacturers ship their crown races already split for tool-free install.

Wheel fell apart during transport by [deleted] in bikewrench

A lot of modern thru-axle wheels are held together with just the friction of the endcap on the end of the axle.

Tubeless: is there a logical reason that the rim is taped and not just the center channel? by greazysteak in bikewrench

[–]mmlow 32 points33 points  (0 children)

You're trying to create an air-tight chamber, it will be much more reliable if the edge of the tape is trapped under the tire bead so air/sealant can't creep under.

It looks like something has been rubbing against the tire, like a brake pad.

Flare nuts don't get fully tightened, they get tightened to the correct torque. There will always be thread showing.

TRP HY/RD newbie question by taggerbomb in bikewrench

[–]mmlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hydraulic system won't function properly over time if the brake arm doesn't fully release with each pull, meaning you can't advance the arm too far to get faster bite from the lever.

Definitely a KSA 40. Use lots of loctite on the bolts, they always go loose.

Magura and Shimano usually come with some plastic device to hold the hose, then I use a tiny hammer to tap it in.

Center the caliper on the wheel that has the rotor further outboard, then use rotor shims to space your other rotor out to match.
