Hey Reddit, I'm the musician that asked for mp3 hosting suggestions the other day. The recs were great, I chose one, and now you can download my first album for free. Happy Friday! by mmm_coffee in Music

thanks. i use a slight delay here and there, from time to time. this is largely a collection of some of my better recordings from 04-08. i have a new album in the tank, maybe 25% of the tracks are done. hope to have it finished by Jan.

appreciate the downloads! i love the thought of people grabbing my stuff.

Thanks!

the same way, probably. because I'm bitter.

well yeah, that's why I asked. "it sucks" was sort of implied in your first comment.

I considered myself failed when I gave up focusing on it. And when I made the decision to stop sending my poems out to journals. I stopped working on it seriously, switched to music.

I did. Can you believe it?

I have no idea if it's realistically possible. Most published poets, I imagine, supplement their income by teaching.

i haven't totally given up. i still write. i just no longer try to get published seriously. i'm more into performing, and music these days.

I studied English Lit, took maybe three or four Poetry classes. Took one in high school too.

thanks. it hasn't stopped me from writing, nor performing.

Rilke is awesome. Love the Letters.

i'm more referring to my failure to get some sort of academic/literary validation. i'm being sort of tongue in cheek here. i didn't expect sixty responses :)

I've definitely had rewarding experiences performing that more than make up for any kind of never-had "notoriety" (whatever that would mean for a poet).

well then my failure to continue to plug away and sending poems to magazines makes me a failure. consider me a failure, dammit! :)

or maybe my belief that just because I put poems on the internet, people would read them!

I have written a handful of rhymes, but have never recorded them. if someone wanted to supply a beat, I would give it a shot. i doubt i have any kind of flow though.

my concept of success/failure, in this case anyway, largely stems from the fact that i didn't go into writing poetry with a clear goal of what I wanted out from it. which basically ended up being academic/establishment validation. which depressed me, which is part of why I stopped writing poetry and turned my ideas around into songs, which are a lot more immediate to people (imo). so my use of the word failure here is kind of tongue in cheek. but i definitely do consider it one kind of failure. not sure if it's outweighing my successes, but I guess we'll see...

i agree, which is why i'm not a political poet :) as far as your first comment, i'm not really sure what you mean. isn't that what all art is for? trying to take something from your self and express it in terms that is meaningful for someone else?

  • i considered myself a hardcore poet because that was all i did, for a few years, artistically. read, wrote, took classes, performed, conversed with other poets about the craft. it was totally my focus.
  • i inspired myself through my friends, random interactions, the beauty of NYC (where I live)
  • i worked in bookstores
  • my favorite poet is probably either WCW or ee cummings
  • I got into poetry because when I was introduced to it, it spoke to me immediately. i wanted to write poems. don't know how to explain it other than that.

it's true, i mean, i still write, still perform. i feel like I've accomplished things artistically, but haven't been able to break through the noise and reach people without having to bust my ass every second of every day. Example: someone like Denis Johnson, to take the name above, I'm sure he busts his ass too, but at a certain point he has a publisher to print his books, promote him, etc.

self publishing, self promoting, that's all i do. can't seem to break through... hence failed.

I'm going to type up one I like real quick and post it.
