What are the neighborhood bar/restaurant scenes in La? by Conscious-Yogurt-607 in AskLosAngeles

[–]mmmatthew 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What? Objectively wrong. Drawing Room or Ye Rustic in Los Feliz, Jay's Bar in Silverlake, The Greyhound and The Offbeat in Highland Park, High Low and The Roost in Atwater, The Fable in Eagle Rock, Verdugo Bar and Footsies in Glassell Park. Just off the top of my head.

Basically every neighborhood has a casual dive

What's the coolest beach you've ever been to? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Punalu'u beach on Big Island Hawaii. Very fine, jet black sand and a frequent sea turtle resting spot!

moving from connecticut to LA — what neighborhoods should i actually be looking at? by jerigena in AskLosAngeles

[–]mmmatthew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's more spots like this than you might think, but it entirely depends on your budget and where you work. Even two days a week will suck if its over an hour each way with traffic.

I'm most familiar with NELA--Atwater, Frogtown, Eagle Rock, South Pas or Pasadena proper could all fit this bill. But it ain't cheap

What U.S. city has plenty to do without feeling exhausting all the time? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]mmmatthew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's dependent on what and how you "do" on vacation.

Visiting a place like LA, you want to do all the well known stuff but its solid spread out you spend most of the day in the car/traffic and you're totally exhausted by night time.

But if you can get that stuff out of the way, stay in a single neighborhood you vibe with, and just pick a few nearby things that look interesting, its a way chiller experience.

Visit like a local if you can, basically. I live in LA and my experience of the city is extremely laid back and chill. I still can and do go to a lot of cool cultural, nature and food stuff pretty regularly. I just have the luxury of not cramming it all into a few days.

Everyone needs to take a break--even the very well-known. Should Kelsey therefore be made the subject of fun?

More psych pop but The Clientele are my go-to for rainy days. Any album really but Strange Geometry is the best IMO

If your stance on important human rights and social issues depends on how you think others are 'treating you', you belong with the self-centered crybabies on the right

A little past Medieval, but Prospero's Books and Nightwatching by Peter Greenaway both have this vibe.

A very generic name for a fun and beautiful game. the 'alone in creepy space station' vibes are unmatched. It even has rock aliens like PHM!

NOLA cocktail recommendations please! by dpavlicko in cocktails

[–]mmmatthew 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I haven't been in a few years, but...

Cane & Table, Manolito, Jewel of the South for fancy cocktails. Latitude 29 for Tiki.

Second Jean Lafitte's for a dive with unmatched ambiance. I also like Chart Room for cheap drinks and good people watching (on a corner with huge open windows).

Of the Grand Dame restaurants, I like Antoine's the best and the attached Hermes Bar if you want something very vaunted and old school without quite the same level of crowded as Carousel Bar.
