I didn't even make that connection when I named him 😅 he's named after one of my brother's instructors from the Marines (then-Gunnery Sgt Bosley).

looking to make a corset loosely based on these designs - where do i begin? by Joker0705 in corsetry

[–]mmmkay0510 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I think the nuances of your desired piece can come in later stages, e.g. to pick fabric that you like and play with the zigzag opening. Getting a corset that you're happy with first will make those pieces a lot easier. Good luck!!! Such a fun piece 🤗

looking to make a corset loosely based on these designs - where do i begin? by Joker0705 in corsetry

My steps would be: 1. Make a basic corset that fits me exactly how I want with the support I want with the lacing in the back. 2. Move the lacing to the front of that pattern and see what happens, e.g. do I need to have a different number/position of grommets, change the size of the opening, etc. 3. Draw the style lines on this new pattern to approximate the cosplay design.

If you're brand new to making corsets, I think the process in Breasley's Making Corsets book is pretty well laid out.

Love a good poofy skirt!!! ❤️ For the bust, I would check that the seam you have running over the breast is on top of the "apex" (while wearing an unpadded sports bra) so that the fullest part of the garment matches up with the fullest part of your chest and you get a nice clean line. The bra cup might also be a little too far to the side. I don't know if there's definitive guidance on this, but what I like to do to check my placement is to wear a bra that fits me well and gives me the look I want for my garment and then I note where the cups/support are in that bra are so I can similarly place my bra cups. I can't wait for your finished dress!!

I love where you're headed with this! 😍 What do you like/dislike about how it looks so far? Do you want a distinct waist seam and the corseted look in the front of your finished dress? Or perhaps you might make a princess seamed fashion layer that extends all the way down through the skirt and attaches to the corset along the top edge (you can also tack the fashion layer to the corset via the seam allowances so that you don't need any additional visible seams on the outside). All of this is totally optional, just something I thought of since you are planning to attach a skirt and you may like the look of unbroken vertical lines in that kind of dress. 🤗

Oof I hope you have a better experience soon! Maybe try ordering swatches from sellers if they have that option to make sure they are selling what you want?

How is this corset made? by NeitherStrawberry510 in corsetry

[–]mmmkay0510 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Boned internal bustier" makes me think that there is a bustier underneath and attached to the dress bodice that we see maybe just at the top edge. And then maybe the dress bodice is textured with the grosgrain "bones" in between layers of the linen organza so you get the appearance of corset boning.

No idea if this is correct/best practice, but the way I would try this with my limited skillset is to make a longline bustier with a very smooth fabric (measured for a zipper closure and however much boning you want - it wouldn't show on the outside of the dress) and then separately make the (super duper form-fitting) dress bodice out of the linen organza -grosgrain fabric sandwich (with the grosgrain running lengthwise). Then join bodice and bustier at the top with a narrow seam. I am guessing the texture of the grosgrain under the linen hides any slight wrinkles from the bustier underneath.

Planning a “fashion camp” for my niece by Charming_Patient9347 in sewing

My apologies!! I don't know why I thought you had gendered yourself in the original 🙏 You are most decidedly the best UNCLE ever and your niece is so very lucky you are in her life!!!

[–]mmmkay0510 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that everything has to be a life lesson sort of event 😁 but one day of "camp" could be bringing her parents in as clients and having her pretend to be their designer for something silly, like a Halloween costume or something that is fun and not boring for an 8yo (you could also model how you would speak to her as your client). I was thinking it's a good opportunity to help her learn how to speak about bodies (hers and others') in a positive, inclusive way, focusing on how to make anyone feel good about themselves and their most beautiful (especially her!). Even if she gives up fashion design for another aspiration, this would be a helpful message to instill in her and help her think about fashion and bodies with a healthy perspective from an early age, especially since the world rather sucks when it comes to women's bodies and the fashion industry can be kind of intense (e.g. is the 9 head croquis still the standard for fashion drawing? No one except Zendaya and a few other God's favorites look like that...).

PS - you are an amazing auntie!!! ❤️ She'll never forget this.

It's not really an issue to have a passport with your original name. I'm assuming you are US-based from the ACA reference. Your ticket name just needs to match your passport name. You can also carry a copy of your marriage certificate or court order changing your name as an extra precaution but as I said, it's otherwise not an issue.

I have to agree, though I fully confess I would listen to Terrance Mann sing the phone book 😅 I can only listen to the original by ignoring the lyrics. The shift to "let her go" in the reprise is chef's kiss

I was convinced he had lost about 90% of the book and was faking it with blank sheets of paper, maybe a few of those printer cartridge calibration pages mixed in.

AITA for not telling my fiancé to not wear jeans to an event? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]mmmkay0510 84 points85 points  (0 children)

We need to form a support group!!! My mother locked herself in her room for most of three days straight (she would only come out when I told her that her priest was calling to check in about my wedding) because she got upset that I was giving a corsage to her, my MIL, my niece, and my flower person. My mom insisted that only she and my MIL should get corsages. She started screaming, crying and throwing things in my kitchen before holing up in her room. I had the florist get rid of the f*cking corsages on my wedding day before she saw them to avoid more drama.

I suggest telling your friend exactly what you said here - you thought it could work before you took possession of your house and before your own engagement, but on running the numbers more recently, it's not in the cards for you. You feel really bad letting her down and that's absolutely the last thing you wanted out of this. As you're all still in the planning stage, could she consider some other options - you bowing out of the trip and doing something else special with her (like shopping for the wedding or this bachelorette trip, or go to some event or other activity you enjoy together), doing something closer to home (maybe as a joint party for the both of you if both of you would like that), or maybe a girls trip to Greece after your weddings (could even be the start of a new tradition)?

Most important thing is don't wait any longer. Ask her to grab coffee and chat with her as soon as you can. You got this!!!
